I would say the players do. Never seen the gym myself but apparently it was an embarrassment.

For every Braith Anasta that quits the club with an axe to grind and whinges about rusty dumbells or not enough free Gatorade, you get dozens of players that don't really care.

If you're a decent player with a chance of making origin, you're going to sign with the best performing club. Not the one with a nicer gym or physio room.

This is why we can't sign blokes like JAC or Latrell. It's why we lost Tedesco. Signing with us is a bad career move when the money on offer from others is about the same. Which it always is in the world of salary caps.

Same goes for the best juniors. No parent wants their kid to sign for a dud club.

A decent gym and facilities is just par for the course in the NRL these days.

So by that logic you'd be OK with having your office in the Glenn Morrison Hotel? 🙂

People like a pleasant day to day workplace - it's where they spend a lot of their life. I've worked in cesspit offices and am currently blessed with having a really nice environment to work in. Makes a big difference.

I don't think anyone begrudges the team getting a decent gym and facilities.

Let's just be realistic that it makes minimal difference to on field performance or attracting players.

Most NRL players would train out of a rundown Anytime Fitness if it meant winning a premiership.

I'm not sure Madge can turn this around for us, he just doesn't seem like a man manager, not sure he can change his approach but if he can't he will find himself on the scrap heap.

Now everyone on the forum is believing everything the media hacks at the DT rag write about Maguire - I give up.

Don't give up @Spud_Murphy, pity them that they read the rubbish to begin with. That they then feel "informed" enough to post a comment is a bigger worry. Murdoch media is not known for presenting evidence and facts. I wouldn't trust them to get the date right.

But the SMH or ABC you would??? right

I no longer trust the SMH since it was taken over by Nine and has Peter Costello as a leader. The ABC, once the former bastion of truth and honesty in reporting and analysis, is a shadow of it's former self under Ita Buttrose and other Scummo friendly appointees.

So, unlike you I suspect, I read widely and form my opinions accordingly. But I could never lower my intellect enough to include anything owned by Murdoch to my list.

Independant always and Aunty is always right... got it

I think those days are well and truly over. Most expect more out of their employer and good clubs provide the little things that make a difference.
I've worked in places that have a perennial fish-sphincter Tuesday approach to the most basic of things like a decent desk, comfortable chair and tea and coffee. People may work their for a while but move on especially when most of the other companies provide those things. Your surroundings make a difference to many people.
I agree it's not the be all and end all but it makes a difference.

My only disappointment as such has been that I'd have thought that Maguire as the current NZ coach and one with links to ESL should have had some success in luring up and comers from both GB & NZ wanting a crack at NRL and possible further recognition by their national teams.

Cant really recall any success with that supposed linkage- it was supposed to get us
over the line with DWZ in spite of our lack of cash compared with Bulldogs. But didnt........................

What's really weird I can't decide if loosing DWZ was a brilliant move or a bad move.

If we could get him for 200-300k from the dogs out of form. dWZ could be an answer to our back problems and we can spend the rest on an actual forward pack.

Can we please stop looking at players from the dogs, we have enough and it hasn't worked ?‍♂️

I agree but look who we pick up and at what price. No more 700K, 4 year contracts unless your a damn superstar.
Aiden Tollman cheaply wouldn't be a bad pick. He may even know Madge from his time at the Storm.
No one would say no to Josh Jackson unless injured.
DWZ, if cheap would not be a bad pickup. I mean nothing more then 300k.

Trent Barrett is doing a cleanout. He will be making players angry. things will go a little well, then he will be like "why isn't my formula working". Now we don't take their trash, but now is the time we make a crazy offer for a decent Bulldogs prop. In fairness to the bulldogs, their forwards have kept playing.

But yea, watching Origin with a Dogs mate. He was like "you signed Mbye, I was so glad". Why sign a 200k player who can't defend on 700k is beyond me. Why not pick up the Morris's? I have no idea.

I had high hopes for Mbye for his first half season. That went quickly out the door. A panic signing, nothing else.

I thought this thread would be best to give my thoughts on Madge and the job he has to do next season..
Madge and co have recruited rather well this off season and with JREY going to SL our cap has a bit of a relief..but moving onto the title of this thread,I honestly think that not only can Madge attract star players, but they also seem to want to be here under his tuition..
Many will straight away say that JO,JTJ are on their last chance in the NRL and WTs are suckers once again, however,we must put faith in Madge to coach the best out of these players and not just JTJ ,JO,the young guys will need close attention as well..
Which brings me to the point of,JTJ,JO,Tamou all this offseason recruits have all been dynamic in the SOO arena, they could be classed as STARS in the NRL and Madge being our coach seems to have an impact on them signing with us..JTJ and JO must see the good ethics in Madges coaching style and structures of play...
I think we may have a bit of a tough start to the year as it progresses we will see the benefits of these senior signings and it gives me confidence that we will be very competative in 2021..

“Stars” don’t want to play under him , as they don’t feel like they want the pressure and training , he will make them do. It’s as simple as that . He recruits players with an edge , or something to prove , and desire to be great . Ryan Matterson had the talent to be one of the best backrowers to play the game , but he clearly lacks the drive , to be great . He thinks he’s great now , when in actuality he’s above average .
This is exactly the same issue with Josh Aloiai, even Sam Burgess at Souths . He gets them to where they need to go , or he pushes them to go to the places he thinks they can get to.
Problem is when they get there , eg. Souths winning the premiership , some accolade like player of the year , or representative jersey ,
The weak minded ones , expect some kind of change or ego stroke , or relaxation of the rules , and when Madge turns around and says ,
right , now we work harder for the next goal , they say he flogs them .
Michael Jordan never let up for a second. Lebron James is the same.
Same with Cameron Smith , Andrew John’s did extras before extras were a thing . Wayne Pearce is famous for never taking his foot off the pedal .
That’s whT greatness is.
Guys like Inglis , Lattrell, Reg Gasnier , even Brett Kenny , will be talked about as being special , but never truely great, because that little bit of fire , whatever you want to call it , they just didn’t have .
And they’re the players that will not choose Madge .
But man , never underestimate the kids out there who want to rip your face off and be the best thier is . Because coaches like Madge , Bellamy , even warren Ryan , whilst not being the most likeable , will show you the way to get there .

Only because JTJ is an abreviation for Roberts as we know,Tamou is easier to spell than JOs name is to spell...
OK so I cant spell or pronounce JOs name properly...If some would like I can always refer to Tamou as TAMMY ...  :blond-haired-woman: :blond-haired-woman:

I think it’s fake news that Madge is too hard on players. Every NRL coach wants his players to be fitter, stronger and faster.

The onus though, is on the strength and conditioning team to get players fit after the off season or coming back from injury.

It was amusing to read that Kevvie Walters has gone back in time with road runs and sand dunes to get his squad fit and bonding just like he did as a player. Matterson would LOVE that.
