MAGPIES GREATS SET FOR BIG RE-UNION

Some of the finest players to ever pull on the Western Suburbs Magpies jersey will be attending the annual Pratten Park Magpies Re-union at Allianz Stadium on Sunday, April 1.

The re-union is set to attract more than 200 former Magpies players and will be held for the very first time on a Wests Tigers match day.

As part of the day’s entertainment in the build up to the Round 5 Heritage clash against South Sydney, Wests Tigers will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 1952 grand final between the Magpies and South Sydney.

Western Suburbs beat South Sydney 22-12 in one of the toughest grand finals ever contested. It was the last first grade premiership the Magpies won.

Western Suburbs Test internationals Harry Wells, Tommy Raudonikis, Arthur Summons, Noel Kelly, John Elford, John Dorahy and Jim Leis are just some of the names attending the re-union to be held at the SCG Members Bar.

The former Magpies players will also be introduced to the crowd at Allianz Stadium prior to the NRL kick-off at 3pm. Wests Tigers will wear the Magpies heritage jersey for the match.

Other Magpies players attending include Bill Keato, Neville Charlton, John ‘Chow’ Hayes, Jim Tody, Ray Brown, Ray Costello, Bob Cooper, Trevor Cogger, Peter Rowles, Allan Fallah, Ivan Jones, Darcy Russell, Tony Ford, Mick Liubinskas and Cherry Mescia.

Wests Tigers and South Sydney will battle for the inaugural Men of League Cup with officials expecting a crowd of more than 30,000 for the game.

Wests Tigers have also come up with a special $10 ticket offer exclusively for former grade players from any clubs in the NSWRL, ARL, Super League and NRL eras.

Loved last year when our blokes took the time to pay respect & shake the Magpies veterans hands, while saints illa players ignored their past greats and ran straight out to formation

he was my coach in 1978 for holy cross under 14 b's

Jim Cody as a very young player in one of the Grand Finals in 1961-63 took it upon himself to retaliate first against one of the St George players thus putting the Dragons player out of the game for good.
Legend has it that Billy Wilson from the Dragons tried to dissuade his teams mates from getting the get square and concentrate on the game but the old Blood Nut couldn't help himself and did the get square at the first opportunity and was subsequently sent off, crikey a send off in a Grand Final when the Dragons were playing!.
Obviously Darcy Lawler mustn't have been the ref but unfortunately the Dragons prevailed with a man down.
As a kid I had the 1968 card of Jim but when I left home the parents must have turfed the set, d'oh!.

He was! And Tony Ford yeah! - one of my all time favourites - he could kick goals from anywhere. Thanks for posting those bubble gum card pics, fellas. Brought back some great memories. Still have no idea how you do that, though :laughing:

Well done to the Wests Tigers for organising this. Great to see them celebrating the history of Wests.

It was great to see the old Maggie's jumper used today. I think they will sell quite a lot of those.

Shame they couldn't quite get over the line today. At 16-4 with 5 on the clock you would thin they were home and hosed. But not to be. We don't seem to play smart when it counts.

Anyway, there is still along way to go and as we have seen in the last two seasons, the club is capable of turning things around so too early to write off the season.

Anyway it was a good day and hopefully next week we can get over the line against Brisbane.

The last 2 years the Magpies heritage days have been superb.Pity like Balmain we didn"t do them as well from 2000.

Not only a great day but a great jersey.Days like this will go a long way to educating the public that Wests like Balmain are very much a part of the Wests Tigers.Very Good.

Shame we lost but before the match I gave them little hope with our form etc so this is a step in the right direction.

We really need Farah & Galloway back.

At least Humble looked good at half.
