Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire says Panthers flyer current New Zealand Kiwis captain Dallin Watene-Zelezniak is a player he has a "very high opinion" of but said any chance of a potential signing would just have to wait and see.

Holding a close connection with Watene-Zelezniak following their time together with the Kiwi national side, Maguire said the 23-year-old would play an integral role with New Zealand going forward, but didn't want to be drawn in to commenting on his involvement at club level — particularly in relation to a potential move.

"There has been a bit of talk in the news," said Maguire.

"I wouldn't have a clue on it all at the moment but he's definitely a player I'd love to have in my ranks. At the moment, everything is just being worked through with himself and his manager — we'll just have to wait and see.

“He’s a player that many people want and once he gets his football back to where he can play, he’s going to be a quality player."

Having made the young flyer captain of the New Zealand national side at just 23 years of age, Maguire said he clearly had a high opinion of Watene-Zelenziak and was confident he would remain a key part of the Kiwis plans going forward.

"I think how he responds [to all of this] will be the key for him," Maguire said.

"It's something, at some stage throughout your career, players face those things and it's about how you deal with it. I've got a very high opinion of him — I obviously had him as captain of the Kiwi team, which is something I hold in very high regard.

"He was fantastic for us on tour and he will be moving forward with what we do at the Kiwis. I’ll talk to him about that and to the selectors around where he’s at.

"We’ve got to make sure we’re doing the right thing by the player as well so they’re in a good mental and physical state before you go for a game like the Tonga one. That's a huge game and a really important one for us from a Kiwi point of view.

"I’ll talk to him as we get closer to that, but he’ll be in and around that squad."

He was asked a lot of questions about Israel Folau

Mentioned he had a lot to do with him at Melbourne

that would be hilarious if tigers signed Folau instead of Melb/Roosters/Broncs

It would be extra hilarious because NRL must have said it 3 times now that they won't register a Folau contract.

@jirskyr that may change depending on the proposed court action against the ARU.

If it goes to court and Izzy wins, i dont know if the NRL has grounds to stop a club from signing him.

The NRL don't have to register contracts for players to play in the their competition..

Good luck with signing a player who won't be registered..Musgrove says hello..

@Geo Then why hasn't Musgrove been playing at all this season?

because...The NRL don’t have to register contracts for players to play in the their competition…so without a registered contract ..they can't play

So the NRL might not be able to stop a club signing Izzy..but can refuse to register his contract..so good luck for him to play

@Geo Im not a lawyer, and not pretending to be one either.

But if Izzy wins his case aginst the ARU, then you have a legal precedent that says what he posted on Instatwitterbook can't be used to deny him employment.

I'm sure there is a chance he could use that precedent against the NRL if they wanted to stop him playing Rugbly League on those same grounds (assuming he even wants to come back to the NRL).

Then there is also the religious protection legislation that the Federal Government is proposing ...

All i am saying is the landscape is changing and when lawyers and courts and government gets involved, don't be too sure of anything.

Izzy is polarising that is for sure but it does make a mockery of the nrl that people hit females, have violent outbursts etc and can play and they wont take him due to him airing beliefs.
I just hope this stance by the nrl is game wide and holistic to include all of the above issues as well because if it isn't looking to clean the game up not signing izzy is ridiculous.

@hodgo I tend to agree. There's definitely a bias here towards "protecting" one facet of society (or their high profile cheer boy) in relation to others (women for example) and the fact that the ARU and NRL can bleat on all they want about theirs being the "inclusive" game for all, but it seems not for Christians or others who hold certain beliefs (that in reality, if spoken publicly, are not breaking the current laws of the land, but i suppose we will soon find that out with Folau's court case).

@dazza65 [shrugs] If I started telling people on Instragram they were going to burn in hell, I'd be sacked the same day. And Folau was warned what would happen. I guess he now has more time to spend devoted to God. Win/win.

It's funny because the God Falou believes in isn't too fond of inclusiveness either.
Christianity is completely exclusive, good if you're in the 'in' group not so good if you're not.

Christianity = Believe X or burn in hell for eternity. So loving

Yeah, the Folau situation is interesting . . . especially in the recent NRL scene.
The indigenous SOO players express their views and are applauded by ( mostly) the left. Forget that they are disrespecting their nation's anthem.
I'd love to see the outrage if the white players turned their backs to the "welcome to country " thing. I would pay to see it, actually. And to hear the vitriol from the bleating constantly offended about disrespect and arrogance, etc, etc.
Folau quotes a bible passage and he is condemned, and barred from his code and also from the NRL.
But the NRL opens it's arms to wife bashers, drunks, assaulters, etc, etc, etc. If you are a chosen one, you can bash your girlfriend, then a few years later you can get drunk and drive at excessive speed while drunk and you will get a glowing character reference from the top dog in the NRL heirarchy. And then get testimonies upon your retirement. Much better to beat up a woman and speed behind the wheel while drunk, than to quote a bible passage. Funnily, a passage that wasn't even specifically singling out the gays. It was a broad aim at many types of "sinners". But of course, someone mentioned the word gay. And we can't have that now, can we ?
I hope my expression of just pure facts here doesn't upset too many of you.
