Managing the salary cap

Hello forum,

So with all this talk about what players are worth, I thought it would be fun to think about how a salary cap should be structured.

I've put together what I roughly think a good break down of salaries are for the full top 30. Note, the salary cap is 11.8m and I haven't included anything on long player discounts or front loading contracts, so this is very much a rough guide but figured it would be a good starting point for discussion! The "quality" of player is pretty self explanatory although obviously the best winger in the comp for instance, still wouldn't find themselves in the elite/top earners category so do keep that in mind.

All thoughts welcome!

If I had a lot more time I'd try and map our squad onto this to see how we stack up...problem is we'd have way too many players in the average or below average categories regardless of what they get paid...

The rumour going around is that API is now on big big money and was Benji's call

So API Luai and Bulla on 2.9 million

This break down also has the top 17 as somewhere between elite and below average nrl player (like a seyfarth). Goes to show how important it is that you can find players from 20-30 that can do a job when called upon. Certainly haven’t had that this year though next years squad is starting to look better on that front.

The hardest thing in putting a roster together is finding experienced depth players who are happy to play reserve grade most weeks but are good enough to do a job in the top grade if and when required.

I remember in the old days before the cap when you had the three grades, 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The lower grades tended to be half young kids on the way up and half old players on the way down. These days your old experienced players on the way out tend to head for the ESL. The successful club seem to have about four roster places taken by experienced players who over a season play very little top grade and are basically there to cover a big injury toll or a lot of rep players around SOO period
