I havent heard exactly that, but something that plays into what you are saying quite nicely.

I can't understand why he has to be left out of playing football of some description,he will need to keep his playing skills to a certain level or it will be a hard road back to fitness…
Even if he plays 15/20 mins a game..

Don't cut me down in flames, but in my days playing footy we worked, ate heaps of steak and pasta in our diets and dozens of eggs a week...I played every week at 90kgs in the centres and wing...I didn't have to have time off to put on weight ....I didn't get a run if I didn't train hard every week...I also know this is NRL,completely different to my day,but surely you don't have to put them in cotton wool every time they look like having ability..

Weed = weight loss from what i have seen. Maybe some of the coaching staff have been on it or they might be readying him for a 10-20min spurt in 1st grade which wouldn't be totally out of place at this stage if he is going to replace Robbie at origin time.

While I agree that match fitness is important, especially if they're grooming him to cover Farah during origin, it's equally important that he doesn't work too hard putting on bulk and risk serious injury.
It's never easy adding weight to a slight frame, so I'll put my faith in the professionals in the strength and conditioning department (didn't think I'd be saying that about the Tigers any time soon).

It seems a weird decision on the face of it. You would think that they would want to assess the impact on his play of any significant weight gain. Maybe he is getting bashed up too much in NSW Cup, but you would think the guy would want to play.

I hope there is no undisclosed underlying reason. Never heard of this tactic before.
