Marshall assault case due in court

The NRL has been granted little reprieve in regards to off-field indiscretions, with the assault case involving Wests Tigers superstar Benji Marshall set to begin in court on Wednesday.

With the fallout from the late night drinking session which saw Sydney Roosters pair Todd Carney and Anthony Watts stood down indefinitely still fresh in the air, the NRL will turn its attention to the case involving the face of the game.

Marshall was charged after an alleged altercation with a 24-year-old man outside a McDonald's outlet in inner Sydney just after 3am on March 4.

The incident came just days after Marshall was handed the honour of officially opening the NRL season.

Marshall, who is not expected to appear at Downing Centre local court on Wednesday, has vowed to defend the charge.

There were reports Marshall had been provoked by degrading taunts aimed at his girlfriend when he pushed the alleged victim.

The NRL refused to sanction Marshall over the incident, claiming they would allow the court process to play out before making judgement.

Hope your right, I just dont like the "tall poppy syndrome" A judge thinking they may have to pull him down a peg or two. Lets hope they have the evidence and the witnesses to squash it before it even gets started and would even be better if the other party had to pay costs

Benji Marshall pleads not guilty to assault April 20, 2011 - 10:06AM

Benji Marshall has pleaded not guilty to assaulting a man in Sydney in March.

The Wests Tigers star and New Zealand captain did not appear at Downing Centre Local Court today, but his lawyer John Byrnes entered the plea to the charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The charge relates to an incident that occurred in the early hours of March 5 at a McDonald's on George Street, in Sydney's CBD.

The matter will return to the same court on June 10, when Marshall is not required to attend if he is legally represented.

What a ridiculous process. At this stage of proceedings they should just be able to email a plea and save everyone's time and money.

I agree in some cases you should be able to handle this kind of thing at an adminstrative level. There is nothing to be discussed - no bail applications, discussion of facts. It just clogs things up and means a whole lot of people who could be doing other things are doing this.

They have specific days just for AVO and assault charges and some of them are so petty it unbelievable…..... Its their blanket approach on assaults and avo are so easy to get its not funny.

Benji will get off no doubt he will get a 1 year good behaviour bond at worst
