I thought that it was an immortal of the game and does not only mean Aussies. i could be wrong but i hope not and he surely would be a shoe in!!

If it included international players outside of Australia, it would include players like Ellery Hanley; Joe Lydon; Roger Millard & Kevin Iro.

I wish RLW would make a formal statement as to qualification into the Immortals is…. :rant

I know these things are highly subjective, but I dont think the above players are as good as the immortals

Fulton, Beetson, Raper, Gasnier, Langlands and Lewis…...pretty strong list!

I must confess however, I do not know anything about Roger Millard.

RLW prob has not created any rules, but given that it is an aussie mag, there is prob a fair bit of Aussies bias, Im reckon if they think someone other than an Aussie is worthy they'll pick them

I wonder what the criteria of becoming an Immortal is? as you said goose it would be fairly subjective.
And it's even harder to base seeing as the game has evolved so much over the years.

I thinkt he term "Immortal" is thrown around a little too much.
There should have been a legitimate NRL Hall of Fame, or a "Legends" catergory.

I agree… An Australian Rugby League 'Hall of Fame' should be started with the Foundation Members being the Team of the Century. I have had the debate 100 times about Immortal classification, and the over-whelming criteria which is met by all inductee's, is thier assciation with the Australia Jumper...

When you have an honest look at the current Immortals; Fulton, Gasnier, Raper, Langlands, Churchill, Beetson & Lewis; I cant see Benji Marshall yet being on that list.

Time will tell?!

Marshall is a great player, but I don't think he's achieved the status of immortal yet. Just look at some of the names who haven't yet made it:
Provan
Coote
Meninga
Sterling
Johns
Langer

He _will_ be regarded as the best player to have played the game imho… as it stands he is that much better than anyone else playing its simply amazing

I think you need to calm down.

I'm calm as mate! We have the best player in the game on our side. Didn't realize your comments were tongue in cheek. Calm down bud.

Best Player ever. No. (Not yet anyway).

Don't forget to be amongst the greatest ever, you have to consider longevity.

If he continues his ways for a few more years, he will be right up there for sure.

I am starting to think he is really building to be an absolute great, on and off the field.

He'll have to really dominate the game at International level to even be considered. Even then theres a waiting list which he'll join and have to wait.

I think some people have tiger googles on. Benji at his best is absolutly amazing, the most destructive player i have ever seen, but at is best.

He is still way to inconsistent, not even the best player in the league. For every amazing try he produces, he passes the ball over the side line of kicks it out on the full or grubbers 10m past the dead ball line. He and sheesn know it too, after every game he talks about his mistakes.

Remove the mistakes from his game and in 5 years with tigers winning premierships…. maybe.

A hall of fame would be nice, but look at rugby union and its hall of fame. Just about every second All Black is in the hall of fame.

I rate Benji so highly I would not have started supporting Wests Tigers if he was not here.

If he plays as many games as Locky he will be an all time great of the game.

No one in today's game gets close to benji. Who else can be quiet then all of a sudden change the course of a game in the blink of an eye. We all know he has the errors in his game but that's what makes him all the more special, he can be having an off game then turn the magic on in an instant

Definitely has the potential to be an immortal one day, especially if the rate of improvement in his defence continues.
Have been watching footy since 1974 and Benji is easily the best attacking footballer I've ever seen.
He is on a par with players like Fittler, Daley, Kenny, Langer and Lockyer. None of these are immortals.
However, I rate him better than Beetson (for influence on a game), Fulton and Langlands. These guys are immortals.
As far as best player ever, nowhere near Joey or Wally yet (but hey, still has heaps of time to catch up !).

Benji is on track to become an 'immortal' but it is years away, if he keeps improving his game and his presence on and off the field he will be deserving of the 'tag' but for the moment he needs to further develop and do his best for the Wests Tigers, the rest will come, all things being equal.

There is already an Australian Rugby League Hall of fame. They inducted players in from 2002-2007 then just stopped. I don't have a clue why. Yet another good reason why the IC needs to come in. Hopefully they will show a bit of respect for the past.

As for Immortals Benji should have at least another 8 years in him as a half by that time I dare say he would be one of the all time greats. Still induction should be at least 15 years after a player retires so it will be a long time before he is even considered.. if RLW ever decide to let Kiwi's be a part of it.

I would not swap him for any other player.

Agree with most of the comments. For all his brillance he still needs to cut down on the errors.

One day he will be considered an Immortal but not at the present moment.

I have to agree that Marshall is the greatest attacking player of all time.

Jux I like your list but I think you forgot about Phil Blake and Turvey Mortimer as well. Both very quick and loved the chip and chase.

Marshall puts bums on seats and gives Channel 9 huge ratings. Even non WT supporters love to watch him in action. Children want to be Marshall which is a huge compliments and shows his impact in the game.

I hope he wins the Dally M this year.

I know we all have our opinions but Bug - Farah the greatest hooker of all time??????? Has not passed Steve Walters and I rate Cameron Smith a better player.

Billy Slater does and can Jais. Marshall is great but Slater is a more brilliant and more consistant. I wish he played for us.

Forget immortal. I'd just like to see him play consistantly brilliant for a full season instead of half.
Personally I believe too many players read the papers and lately the media are all over Benji (with good reason). Oppositions read it and then come game time Benji has a psychological edge. Read away I say.
