Marshall suffers ankle injury

By Ben Horne AAP Sun, 21 Feb 2010 22:03:46
Benji Marshall sent a scare through the Wests Tigers camp, when he suffered an ankle injury in the closing stages of Sunday's 28-10 NRL trial loss to the Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium.

With just two minutes remaining in the match, the Tigers playmaker chased through a Robbie Farah grubber kick and pulled up short.

Although he walked from the field without assistance, he headed straight up the tunnel.

The problem did not appear to be serious, but it could keep the Kiwi star out for a couple of weeks and see him miss the opening round of the premiership.

Tiger doctor Donald Kuah admitted there was the possibility that Marshall had damaged ligaments in his ankle and could be sidelined for a couple of weeks.

Marshall iced the ankle immediately and there was no swelling. He walked away from the ground without crouches, but scans will reveal the full extent of the damage on Monday.

"He twisted his ankle, the next 24 hours will tell, I don't think there was anything major," said Tigers coach Tim Sheens.

The New Zealand captain has been injury-prone most of his career, however he enjoyed a relatively healthy season in 2009.

Without an established halfback at the club, losing Marshall for any length of time would be bad news for the Tigers.

The other worry for Wests is Jason Cayless, who was put on report for a late hit on Rooster Todd Carney in the 63rd minute.

Carney put up a mid-field bomb before the referee deemed the new Tigers prop was late in his contact.

He definately did limp off the field. I was worried that it might have had something to do with that leg injury he got last time.

Even if it is still pre-season. If it is a slight tweak then Round 1 is certain.
Any sort of tear in the ligamnet might see him back in Round 2 or 3.'
IMO, he will not miss Round 1.

I really hope that it is just a minor twist because we need to start the year off strong and with confidence and benji marshall is so important in bringing the team together. Fingers crossed everything is fine!

Is it from last week too? Hopefully nothing major, rest him for this weeks trials then should be right for rd 1.

Just goes to show how simple the WT season can derail. If something close to this happened through the season WT would struggle at NRL level for depth due to poor blooding…

Marshall injured
Gibbs suspended
Cayless suspended
Payten injured

Poor blooding? That is absolute crap.

Smith gets injured the Storm struggle.
Kimmorley gets injured the Dogs struggle.
Soward gets injured the Dragons struggle.
Thurston gets injured the Cowboys struggle.

Doesn't matter what team, if you take out their top quality half they'll struggle. Absolutely nothing to do with blooding.

Ahh…....the joy some fans have after a loss.......pointing out all the negative that can happen.....and this a trial game at that...heaven forbid if it actually counted for 2 Comp points....

Well reports are that Marshall's injury is much worse than thought and some will get their wish.....

No doubt though there will be someone step up and give their all for the Wests Tigers......win lose or draw........

It's as if people have forgotten that at 8-6, Marshall, Farah, Ellis, Heighington and Cayless were all sitting on the bench for 30 minutes!

our backline and forward pack kept changing every 10 minutes, how can anyone take control or find any rythm?
They can't, because it was our very first trial!

Roosters, on the other hand, had their key players out there for 65 minutes straight, no wonder they were kicking ahead.

What reports? He wouldn't even have his scan results yet.

Yeah, all being the same, if Marshall isn't playing, we are stuffed.

Well seeing as though no swelling was reported, I think your postie has dropped off the wrong mail.

Added to that a disclocated ankle would mean that tearing of the ligaments are present and would involved a trained and professional medical staff member to put the dislocation back into place, so therefore I could not see Marshall 'walking gingerly up the tunnel' with this injury if it were the case. The club doctor would immediately pick the symptoms for this type of injury you would think.

Marshall's injury not as bad as feared

There is relief in the Wests Tigers camp, with Benji Marshall's ankle injury not as bad as first feared.
The Kiwis captain will still have scans today after it was feared he would miss the first few rounds of the NRL season
Meanwhile Parramatta's Ben Smith will also have scans today for a suspected fractured cheek bone.

Yeah exactly, with a dislocated ankle, that is your season right there as it takes 2 months alone just to get out of a cast. As somebody who has dislocated an ankle, I can tell you that 'walking' up the tunnel would never happen.
