Tigers v Rabbitohs
Sydney Cricket Ground
Sunday, 2pm

When it comes to a quintessential ‘heritage’ rugby league match, it doesn’t get much better than watching the Wests Tigers go around with the South Sydney Rabbitohs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on a Sunday afternoon.

What makes this match-up even more mouth-watering is that both sides will be desperate to get hit some form – despite both clubs sitting inside the top eight, the Tigers and the Rabbitohs are coming off losses before the bye.

And let’s hope they’re all refreshed. With livewires like Benji Marshall, John Sutton, Robbie Farah and Chris Sandow on the field and probable clear skies over Sydney, it’s a great opportunity for the playmakers to dazzle in front of what will undoubtedly be a huge crowd.

In the corresponding match last year, Nathan Merritt crushed the hearts of the Tigers army with an incredible field goal on the stroke of full time. What have they got in store for us this year?

Watch out Tigers: When the Bunnies have been “on” this year, they’ve really been on, winning three of four games in 2010 by a 13+ margin. This is due partly to the work of their dynamic hooker Issac Luke, who played a great game for New Zealand and will be looking to bring back a winning attitude to his club.

One of the top point-scorers so far this season on 54, Luke is most dangerous when he runs from dummy-half, sitting at second in the competition for both dummy-half line-breaks and dummy-half runs.

South Sydney’s other playmaker, John Sutton, can certainly sniff out a try, having a hand in 11 four-pointers so far this season. A few of these have been for centre Beau Champion, who earned his first representative jersey for City last week.

With nine tries to Champion and six to Nathan Merritt on the other side of the field, the Rabbitohs’ backline will generally find their way to the white stripe on any given day.

A real area of concern will be the Tigers’ goal line defence, which has leaked almost three quarters of points against them this year. This is good news for Souths, who have scored 80 per cent of their tries from inside the opposition’s 20-metre zone.

Both Sutton and Souths’ halfback Chris Sandow will want to do some bombing on the Tigers’ line, with only 60 per cent of bombs being defused by Wests this year.

Watch out Rabbitohs: It’s a case of anything you can do, we can do better, with the Wests Tigers showing off their fair share of impressive attacking skills in 2010.

As they have consistently done in recent seasons, the Tigers have the uncanny ability to break the defensive line and make great metres (along with scoring great tries) in broken-field play.

Five-eighth Benji Marshall has a big hand in this, with three line-breaks himself and eight line-break assists to his name so far this season, all of them coming from passes.

Almost half of the Tigers’ tries this year have come from outside their opposition’s 20 metre zone. With ball-playing back-rowers like Gareth Ellis and Chris Heighington behind Marshall, the Tigers can score from virtually anywhere, which may trouble South Sydney, who have started their past three games slowly and with some questionable defensive efforts.

Another variable factor in the match will be the performance of Robbie Farah. Always the consummate professional, there’s even more on the line for Farah as he shows Origin selectors what he’s capable of for the last time before the New South Wales squad is picked.

With Robert Lui back into the side at halfback, Farah and Marshall will have more freedom to create spark in attack.

Souths should also be wary of the Wests Tigers’ defence. While still leaking their fair share of points, the Tigers have shown that this season they are far more likely to dig their heels in during tough periods of the game.

Where it will be won: Neither club is known for their defence, so it will come down to how the smaller men go. The Rabbitohs can’t afford to begin the game on the back foot, and need to be aggressive if they’re going to stop the Tigers rolling forward.

The Tigers need to be solid on their line, with John Sutton and Chris Sandow creating plenty of opportunities for their backline with their varied kicking games.

It’s also important to maintain their big men, especially with the return of Roy Asotasi as Rabbitohs’ captain.

The Tigers have suffered the late withdrawal of prop Keith Galloway with a broken hand.

The history: Played 14, Wests Tigers 8, South Sydney 6\. They’ve played at the SCG twice, with the clubs claiming one apiece. The Tigers demolished the Rabbitohs the last time they met, winners 54 points to 20 at ANZ Stadium – however, Souths can claim a mental edge at the SCG, pipping the Tigers by one point on the buzzer in the corresponding clash last year.

Conclusion: This game could go either way, and it really comes down to which versions of both teams turn up on Sunday.

The opportunity to leapfrog the loser on the ladder is up for grabs, meaning it’s not only an opportunity to win a grudge match, but a good time to win a game going into the Origin period.

Both teams are comeback specialists, so expect a tight encounter.

Would be nice to beat them by one point this time.
Run alot players at sandow so he has to tackle alot.
This will sap his energy for attack.
Do not let sam burgess get the offloads away when he is being tackled.

Wouldn't it be nice if we actually played to our potential … On a consistent basis ......... We have the talent to trouble the top eight sides ....... But so far we haven't displayed the consistency to make it the top eight ... Could it all start this weekend?

Wests Tigers v South Sydney, SCG, Sunday 2pm (EST)

The corresponding game was won on the bell last year and it wouldn’t surprise if this one goes down to the wire. The Tigers are facing four losses on the trot and will be desperate. The loss of Keith Galloway is a huge blow, but that could be outweighed by the return of halfback Robert Lui. Lui’s return ensures Robbie Farah gets the chance to move back to the hooking role, where he’s most potent. South Sydney could be rusty from the bye, but I think the fact the game is being played at the SCG will be motivation enough to have the Bunnies ready to fire. I’m tipping the big South Sydney pack to capitalise on the absence of Galloway and dominate through the middle on their way to victory.

VENUE & TIME: Sydney Cricket Ground, Sunday, May 16, 2:00pm (AEST)
COVERAGE: Fox Sports
HEAD TO HEAD: Played 14 - Tigers 8, Rabbitohs 6
LAST TIME: Round 17, 2009 - Tigers 54-20

WALKING WOUNDED: The Tigers have lost Keith Galloway for at least two weeks after the red-headed prop had surgery on his hand on Wednesday. With Origin just around the corner it's shocking luck for Galloway, who has succumbed to injury during the rep period for the second year in a row. He joins Jason Cayless, Taniela Tuiaki, Tame Tupou and Tim Moltzen on the sidelines. Junior Moors is likely to take 'Big Red's' spot in coach Tim Sheens' 17\. The Tigers halfback spot has been a problem area for the club this season but talented youngster Robert Lui returns from an ankle problem in the No.7 jersey. Roy Asotasi might be 6ft and weigh over 100kg but the South Sydney skipper has been one of the forgotten man at Redfern this season. With big boppers David Taylor and Sam Burgess getting most of the attention and a knee injury keeping him on the sidelines, Asotasi has rarely rated a mention. He's back for this clash and he rarely stays quiet for long which should prove a headache for the Tigers' forwards.

FORM: Both teams had the bye last weekend and it couldn't have come at a better time. The Tigers have lost three games on the trot while the Rabbitohs have won just once during that same period. The Tigers haven't been heavily beaten in any of those matches which proves they aren't far off getting a win. Seasons are defined by being able to grind out results in close matches and unless they are able to start doing that then another season without finals football beckons for Tim Sheens' side. After a three-game winning streak early in the season the Rabbitohs have been disappointing. They have made a habit in recent games of falling behind early in matches before coming good in the second half. If they give the hungry Tigers too much of a head-start they might cop a hiding this time.

WHO'S HOT: He's not even halfway into his three-year contract and the Tigers have extended the deal for Englishman Gareth Ellis and it's easy to see why. The hard-running backrower not only gives the Tigers great thrust on the left-side but has added much-needed steel to their defence. Expect another tireless performance against compatriot Sam Burgess. It's the names and size of the Rabbitohs forward pack that might get most of the attention but centre Beau Champion has been the star of the backline. The former Australian Schoolboys representative has scored nine tries in just eight matches this season. He gained his first rep jersey for City Origin last week and his battle with Chris Lawrence will be a highlight.

WE THINK: With a record of four wins and four losses, Tigers coach Tim Sheens has labelled this a season-defining game for his side. Win and keep in touch with the top eight, lose and it makes their finals chances that much harder. What the Rabbitohs are going to produce is harder to predict than next week's lotto numbers. When they are hot they are a devastating prospect but can resemble a park footy side if they aren't on their game. The last time the two sides met at the SCG it took a last-minute Nathan Merritt field goal to clinch a thrilling win for the Rabbitohs. It should be just as close this time but expect the Tigers to turn the table. Tigers by 4

Sunday, SCG, 2pm (AEST)

Referees: Steve Lyons and Tony De Las Heras
Head to head: Tigers 8, Rabbitohs 6
Last clash: Tigers 54-20 at ANZ Stadium (rd 17, 2009)
TAB SportsBet: Tigers $1.70, Rabbitohs $2.10
FootyTab: Rabbitohs +3.5

The Tigers gave their fans great cause for optimism through the early rounds, winning four of their first five games, but since then they have lost three in a row. They have had problems in the key halfback position, with a couple of options there going down injured and another not doing well enough to hang on to the spot, but one of those injured players - Robert Lui - returns for this game, and that should give the Tigers a big lift. Lui had begun the season well, before getting hurt.

The Rabbitohs, like the Tigers, have a win-loss record of 4-4\. They won three in a row at one stage, but in their last three games they have won once and lost twice. Both teams are coming off the bye. The Rabbitohs also get a boost, with prop and captain Roy Asotasi returning from injury. His presence should result in a more consistent performance from the forward pack as a whole. If either teams produces an 80-minute performance, they will win. Both teams have had trouble concentrating for the full length this season.

It only took 10 weeks….

This game is a concern, so much so, it may just shape the balance of the season. Our defence lacks venom, as evidenced by the Penrith game and it appears that our attack is faltering as well. The performance against Easts was clearly put into perspective by the Cowboys last round. Our Line Break stats are amongst the worst in the NRL. I'm now concerned that Farah in particular, was playing much better footy three years ago.

Souths have Taylor, Asotasi, Burgess, Stuart, all capable of great metres. We just don't have the pack to contend with that, particularly since Galloway's out. Our pack are easy, predictable targets in attack, save for Fifita. Souths 13+, I regret to say

So I wasn't far off when I said the other side has a 50 - 50 chance of scoring everytime!

That sums it up, really.

Souths have the potential to make huge metres and we have the potential to go nowhere, especially with Galloway out - it's this that worries me.

Very very nervous about this one. Even if we skip out to a 20 point lead early on my heart will still be in my throat.
