Killer Stat: Metres gained & conceded

The Wests Tigers might have gotten back in the winner’s circle against the Eels but they have plenty of problems. Perhaps **the biggest concern is the fact they average just 1269 metres gained each match, ranked 15th in the NRL.** Currently their ability to find ways to score from anywhere is keeping them in the mix but finals get tight defensively and the Tigers aren’t getting good field position. They are also conceding 1366 metres a game, ranked 12th in the NRL, so they are allowing their opponents to get within range often.

Further Concern: Line-breaks conceded are six a game (most in the comp); 36.8 missed tackles a game (most by any side).

this is a worrying stat imo.. given that our starting front rowers (woods & gal) make over 120m on average each game. this shows the lack of use of our interchange props(bell and cash/moors) as well as the lack of ability of our 2nd rowers (fulton, blair and heighno) to make metres up front.

we all know sheens under uses his bench and hopefully this stat wakes him up to the fact that the bench needs to be better used.

not to mention, our back 3, where most of the blame imo goes to moltz for not running it back hard and making metres.

We are middle of the pack for most stats, and the worst in the league for others.

It honestly looks like other teams just don't turn up to play our lads.

- I agree about the use of the bench, I accept that most of our forwards are 80m players, but our bench is often underused, unfortunately it is not a surprise if Bell, Moors or BMM get 15 minutes or less per game.
- IMHO we shall never play Fulton and CW in the forwards at the same time.
- lack of 'proper' fullback, we do not often see our fullback return the ball and support the play.
- Lawrence and Ayshford were below par this season.
- Lote had series of injuries.

I know Galloway and Woods have good average metres per game but I would like to see their average metres per minute played compared to some of the other props. I dare say their actual involvement isn't quite as good as it seems.

Our stats are bad against the top teams because we have chopped and changed the team due to ongoing injuries throughout the year.

The reason we are in the 8 is because of the match winners we have in Farah and especially Marshall. The latter is leading the NRL in Try Assists and Line Break Assists by a country mile.

Besides, stats are the past.

Look forward and be confident that this team can do something special.

We don't get a lot of punch off the bench and our backrow can be pretty lacklustre in go forward at times too. Couple this with the fact that Benji has not run the ball a lot this year, our backline has struggled to make decent yards too.

Actually I reckon our metres per game would not have been overly exciting in either 2010 or 2011

Anyone have the figures I know we wouldn't have been ranked 15th but we would struggle to be in the Top 8

Our metres given away is shocking and just backs up most of our comments about our 2012 defence

i think we scored the most amount of tries from kicks this year.. not 100% sure though.

someone mentioned benji leads the comp in try assists, however iirc a couple of weeks ago we were not even in the top 10 for the amount of points scored.. shows the lack of options (or depth in the halves) we have.

also, we started the season with keith, bell, groat and woods as our top 4 props (the only props really).. just imagine our season if woods turned out to be a failure or bell "couldn't adjust to the WT style of play" given the injury problems Red has had.

form of woods and ryan's improvement imo have been the ONLY highlight for us this year. i would like to include BMM here as well, but his bigger test will come next year.

I often think this myself. I love our two starting front rowers and the service they give us, but I believe that a bloke like Matt Bell is so under used. I would love to see the two front rowers getting a bit longer / sooner break and getting Matt Bell some more game time. I think this will help tighten the middle up in the last 20mins of 1st half and 1st 20 mins of 2nd half.

Adam Blair and CW haven't necesarily set the world on fire with their metres each game either, so this wouldn't help the stats too much (although both seem to me coming in to some form!).

Regarding metres conceeded, we always defend worse when we play flat and wait for the attack to reach us, we need to play that up and in style of defense (as a line) like we did in our run last year. :righton:

This. It is hard for guys like Bell and Moors to make meters when they spend three quarters of the game on the pine. I think it speaks volume about the faith Sheens has in the depth players when he will only use 14-15 players for the first hour.

I think what only counts from now is getting the W anyway possible. If WT made the GF and won 49-48 I would not be complaining!
However, I think if (and yes I know its been like this most of the season) we sort out the defence and given that the attack is on the up, we will go further than most think. The pressure is off really, no one expects the Tigers to win the comp anymore. Good time to sneak in under the radar…

The stats indicate we are very lucky to be in eighth position and I would agree with that. This year we have been terrible in most departments from round one. Our defense is timid and unreliable, our go forward is very weak,kicking game hit and miss, chase game ragged and attack is often very predicable.
If they can get their defense up to scratch by that I mean, fast moving,enthusiastic and effective their rest of their game will come together. To late this year, lets hope next year things turn around

2nd worst for Tackle busts and 4th worst for making line breaks we have been inconsistent and poor in both attack and defense.

I think we have really stuggled off the bench with Cashmere, Bell, Moors just not being up to standard which is prob why they havent been resigned.

I have defended Adam Blair but he has less tackle busts then almost any regular 2nd rower in the nrl.

If it wasn't for Benji we would be last this year but luckily he has turned on the magic often enough to lead the line break assits and try assists
