Go also declared the Tigers need to end their seven-year finals exile. The Tigers have seemingly been in a constant rebuild since Tim Sheens was axed in 2012.

Mick Potter, Jason Taylor and Ivan Cleary were unsuccessful in bringing sustained success to the Tigers, who won their only premiership in 2005.

But Go said the foundations for success had now been laid.

“This is not a rebuild,” Go said. “The hard work was started with Jason and Ivan built on that.

“Michael has a platform now he can build from so we don’t have to start again.

“I’ve had a couple of discussions with (Maguire) during the process. He was clear about that. He said he felt we had a really good solid group of players, there are some opportunities to fill some gaps on our list. We know that.

“He said he has some strong thoughts around that.

“This is a guy who likes to win premierships. He has been very upfront about that.

“He said to me ‘you know I like to win premierships’. We didn’t say he has to win one next year or 2020 but he is focused on winning. That’s important for where our clubs sits now.

“We have to get in the finals. Our club hasn’t played finals football since 2011\. That’s a long break.

The Tigers have only made the finals three times in their history. Picture by Brett Costello.

“Ninth isn’t good enough. We need to turn our fans hope into reality. We are not saying we need to win the competition next year or be in the top four but there is an expectation that very soon and hopefully next year we have to be playing finals football.

“We need to be eighth or better. Anything less than that would be frustrating for our fans.”

When it became clear Cleary’s position at the club was untenable, Maguire and Wayne Bennett reached out to the Tigers.

Go said having the calibre of premiership winning coaches wanting to join their club shown how far the Tigers had progressed in recent years.

“It was harder four years ago because we were dealing with a lot of issues in the club that were really about rebuilding the entire club,” Go said.

“Not just the on field component. At the time we were looking for the best coach we could get.

“A lot of coaches that approached us but we weren’t necessarily being approached by coaches who had a lot of experience.

The club’s brass believe the rebuild work has already been done under Ivan Cleary. Picture by Gregg Porteous.

What we had we were really happy with. There are leaders for an organisation at a moment in time.

“We don’t have any regrets about what decisions have been made. Even though the recent coach stayed less time than we would have hoped he still did a great job. So did Jason Taylor in his first few years.

“It’s recognition for us that we had two of the most successful coaches in the league approach us to say that would be interested in coaching should Ivan leave.”

Go said there was no “bitterness” towards Cleary despite the sour taste his return to Penrith left on the club.

“We will always remember him as a good coach,” Go said. “He was good for our club. He gave our fans hope. That’s a really valuable thing to have given our fans who for years and years had in many ways lost hope. That’s why the disappointment from our fans was so personal. They believed in him. “They jumped straight on that bus.

“There was disappointment only because we had a very positive experience with Ivan until the day I got a call from a journalist to tell me Penrith were trying to sign our coach.”

This is a women/leader who has a very good read of the situation.

Happy the club is on good hands.

Yes agree ….. however interesting point is that management and coach have now made some serious noises that they expect improvement on this years table result so that means no pussy footing “we must make the eight”. I know that that’s the aim of every team but ....Up to now all the talk has been three year build to final eight and semi finals.
The roster we have currently will at best, get us outside the eight again so to me that means some significant re-engineering is needed. On top of what we have we need 4 good first graders or young players who have dipped successfully their toes into first grade already PLUS at least one (hopefully 2) gamebrakers.
Anyway ... Just my read on how things stand.

Are we trying to convince others or ourselves ??

Rebuild has started but it is far from over and as we know all so well , we can slip into mediocrity so quickly

Praying it doesn't happen again

WHERE THE TIGERS ARE HEADED

Don’t assume Wests Tigers are going to play a certain way next season.

Not even I know what style we’re going to use at this stage. It’s yet to be decided. That process will begin in earnest when I physically take charge of the team at training on Monday. We’ll work it all out over the pre-season.

I don’t come with a style and force it upon a team no matter what their playing roster looks like. I coached Wigan one way and South Sydney another way. This year I came at it from another angle with the New Zealand team.

I adapt to the people I’ve got within the team. The aim is to continually evolve as a group. If you can do that, the skills of the players improve and they develop into better players, which allows you to go further and further towards becoming a better team.

That’s the exciting part of coaching.

I’m looking forward to sitting down with each individual player of the Wests Tigers over the coming days and weeks.

We must be a strong defensive team. That needs to be instilled or you can’t hope to be successful.

In attack we’ve got a number of players with different skills and approaches. There’s Luke Brooks, who plays a straight and fast game, and Benji Marshall, who plays a bit sideways.

Josh Reynolds is a real competitor, Moses Mbye comes out of the back and chimes into the line in different ways and Robbie Farah has a variety of skills out of dummy half. Plus there are the guys who go through the middle.

I’m looking forward to getting a thorough understanding of each of those players and working the best of what they do into the game-plan we design.

A NEW DAWN
The aim is to play finals footy. That’s why we do what we do.

I’ve got ambitions and expectations beyond that for my time at the club, but first we need to work really hard in the pre-season to put ourselves in a position to create opportunities moving forward.

So I’ll be hitting the ground running on Monday.

I’ll have done bits and pieces over the weekend after flying in on Friday night and that follows on from communications I had with Wests Tigers staff from over in England.

My focus was obviously on the Test series, but I was still able to put a lot of things in place and some of that was based around a lot of young kids starting training last week. The more senior players will start the same day I do.

I can’t wait. I feel refreshed. I’m keen to impart my knowledge on the team. I’ve had a bit of a break from club coaching, which wasn’t intended, and I’ve spent a lot of time in my year off just working with many different departments and leadership groups at the NRL.

I’ve learned something new and met a lot of good people and really enjoyed it, but now it’s time to get back into club-land and I feel very fortunate to be able to do that at an organisation like Wests Tigers. I see a huge amount of upside in it.

Very true Ink

I'm just hoping we don't rely so much on our scramble defence and can cut down the original missed tackles

That is going to be the initial problem

Good attitude from Maguire. In a manner of speaking Go has boxed him in from the get go by saying that this will not be a rebuild year and that they are expecting results.

Attack with our defence a Wests Tigers fans dream..

Madge must have been reading the forum also with those claiming he only one style of play based on forwards rolling through the ruck only..I like that he has said he will asses the strengths of OUR team …although I'm not real sure what they are..so be good if he could let us know..
