Mick Potter's Biggest Challenge

To get the best out of the Wests Tigers as a team I think Mick Potter's biggest challenge is to get the best out of Benji Marshall who I think has plateaued as a player and has been not playing to his true ability. I think Sheens trying to turn him into a halfback has stuffed up his game to a shadow of what it could be. I think the teams fortunes depend on fixing this problem and I dont think it will be a quick fix !

Potter in my opinion has more challanges than any other coach in the NRL

Forward pack ,defensive issues and a back line that misfired all season

Farah will have to carry us this season

Don't get me started on Benji. I know it's the first game of the year but nothings changed, nothing ever will, he's poor 80% of the time, if it's possible he's getting worse. He shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Thurston they're worlds apart. Please Potter don't let him kick the ball ever!!!.
I can already see me pulling my hair out while banging my head against the wall.

He looked pretty slow and a bit too big tonight. Still a few weeks to go but I hope he gets a bit more nimble in that time. I really hope Robbie is the last option in kicking too. Miller - Anasta - Marshall - Farah should be the kicking options in that order.

And yet in a badly beaten tigers outfit last year he led the nrl for try assists and line break assists???

Thats the other 20% of the time…..imagine if he were good 80% and poor 20.....thats what the ratio should be for one of the worlds so - called best

Hard not to think like TIGER posted....but it is more of the same, hopefully he finds more consistency as the year rolls on but boy weve been saying this for a bloody decade now

Benji is just so ineffective in these games. I've yet to see him play any decent football in a rep game or charity game or whatever. Great at club level though.

Hypothetical question then, if Benji happens to tank this season, does anyone think Potter will drop him and give Sirro a run for example? I would like to think so.

I would hope that any player who is constantly playing poor would be dropped as long as there is someone playing better in that position

It would be interesting to see how Benji reacts to being hooked during a game or getting the news he will be spending 2 weeks in Reggie's?

In reality though, I would suggest it will be Potter who would get hooked at the next board meeting… While he should be allowed to run the team, there are some places you just don't go in the political world of Rugby League?!

Let's hope Benji allows players like Miller & Robbie run the team, so he can inject himself into games at the right times. I've always felt less Benji is a more dangerous Benji.

If Benji tanked at 5/8 I would promote Sironen and move Benji to centre before I dropped him. This might allow him to play his natural game and inject himself at the right opportunity. This would require him to reboot his game and require a lot of coaching and change of the team's game plan. Lets hope the Tigers win their first 10 games in a row and none of this matters,

Does being dropped actually help??

BM is a superstar, he is our superstar and deservedly so. (No i dont have a man crush)

I would prefer he is rested than dropped.

as for biggest challenge… I would like coach Potter to turn our team into a team that batters and bruises the opposition, a team that they dont look forward to playing.

If the Tigers start the season poorly and Marshall isn't firing Potter will at least experiment with moving him to another position. He isn't Sheens and will be approaching it all with fresh ideas. I think even if we suck this year most of us will appreciate the dig Potter has. I wouldn't be averse to putting Marshall at fullback for 20 minutes during the Parra trial just to see what he has there tbh.

With Senior Players a new Coach doesn't necessarily remotivate them, it's sometimes when they get jaded and being in the same Team for a long time creates a same old same old, so the need to move on becomes paramount, likewise some Players happily stay with one Team throughout their Playing Life. If Marshall & Farah can't get remotivated by Mick, it may be time for them to move on and not the Coach! Mick must be a lot different to Tim Sheens in his philosophy and motivation of a Squad, so maybe it won't be an issue!

I think anyone who is not slightly concerned about Benji going forward is kidding themselves. Will he all of a sudden become a better player at 28 or 29? He has been 3 or 4 seasons practically injury free however seems to be the same player making the same mistakes. The main concern for me is his lack of pace, that was always his x factor, that yard to nimbleness, step or jink that would create an opening or a break. He just gave up after 30 yards last night after having a 5 yard head start. Im never that worried about his organising ability because i never thought that was any good to begin with if that makes any sense.

However he did have pace and that was an x factor. Once that goes by a yard or two and he comes back to the pack you have half the player in my opinion. Don't want to hang him on one glorified trial and keen to see him under the new coach. However there are genuine concerns in my opinion.

The changes and play after this season will say a lot.

New coach, new system, clean slate
