Mitch Brown has made his goal clear for 2012 – to secure a permanent starting position preferably in the number 1 jersey.

Brown wore the Wests Tigers ‘utility tag’ well this season, having played 5 games at centre, 13 on the wing, and coming off the interchange bench 3 times.

Injuries to centre Chris Lawrence and wingers Lote Tuqiri and Matt Utai saw Brown fill the void for Head Coach Tim Sheens and although he is not complaining, he clearly wants more game time next season.

“I wanted to cement a position somewhere in the backline this year but I guess the boys played too well for me to get in,’’ Brown confessed.

“It was tough. I wanted the full-back spot after playing there in the finals series last year but Tim Moltzen played really well and he is a very good footballer.

“I’m lucky in a way in that although I haven’t had a solid position for the past two seasons, I have played 40 games for the Club.

“I’ve been working hard on my fitness so I can give myself the best possible shot at a starting position.”

Wests Tigers Captain Robbie Farah said Brown was an important member of the side.

“Mitch never complains and he has the respect of all of his team-mates,’’ Farah said.

“It wouldn’t be easy for him. There were weeks during the season where he played awesome but found himself on the bench a week later.

“Mitch is a very hard trainer because he knows we need him every time he gets his opportunity. And when he does, he never lets you down. He is very valuable.”

Good story Mitch deserves a better go of it in 2011 What position he plays will be interesting At full strength and everyone in top form you imagine the only position he will be a realistic shot is the No 1 position And this then comes down to what player is in the 7 jersey
Interesting times ahead
Stay tuned Tigers fans

Cant see Mitch getting the opportunity he wants. If he couldnt get it after his 2010 finals form then the poor guy is just gonna have to settle for a bits and pieces role. He deserves to be a starter in the NRL somewhere though and we are lucky to have a player of his qaulity as a back up

a quality footballer wouldnt look out of place in the starting lineup but opportunities may be limited again. we need a player like him

Agree with the sentiment of the other posters here, sadly he may not get that secure position. When someone does go down invariably injured, he needs to have a "Nathan Merritt" like game where all of a sudden he smashes through and scores 5 tries, 3 of them solo efforts.

Sad, but true.

If the last two years were anything to go by, Mitch will have another 15-20 games this year in a Tigers jersey to provide a couple of wonderful efforts to try and nail down a spot.

Good luck Mitch, hope it all comes together for you in 2012.

Hard to see him getting a starting role. He's a solid performer, just hasn't got that X factor about him. Hopefully he knows he has to work on that and who knows maybe he can grab that No 1 jumper.

mitch ia a great back up player to cover for injuries, but at full strength, i cant see him getting in our starting team. thus it is unfortunate that i think we may lose him (not sure when his contract runs out?) because im sure he could get a regular starting spot at a few other clubs.

Sadly, I think Mitch might be even lucky to get a bench spot this year now that Reddy & Grant are part of the pack. I just think that both those guys will have a better ability to find the line.

I really would love to see Mitch come out firing and prove me wrong.

His best chance is if Moltzen is our 7 for next year, leaving Miller in NYC and the fullback position open for him, Reddy, Grant or Tedessco.

I dont think he has to look far for what will make him a regular starter in the squad. I'd say Fullback is where he is most suited, but if he wants to impress the coash during the pre-season and trials, bring the 'MONGREL' Mitch…

This is the biggest ingredient we are lacking at Fullback & Wing and if he is a chance of taking the Number 1 off Moltzen or the Number 5 off Ryan, this is where he will make people take notice.

Fire Up Brownie!!!

Just thinking about it more, probably a lot has to do with how Lote bounces back - 2011 was a writte off for him, if the body doesn't hold up I reckon Mitch's time will come.

Hard to see him getting anywhere near the no1 job, not that he dosnt have the skills, but Sheens has made it pretty clear that he rates a few other players higher. Its hard to understand why, maybe its the balance of the team or maybe their is something we the punters dont know. I think poor Mitch is going to be a depth player in 2012 once again

Agree, not that I think it's the right decision, but more of the way in which Brown is viewed by Sheens.

I am a huge Mitch Brown fan, and I really would like to see him as fullback. I don't think he will get it to be perfectly honest. He seems to be viewed by Sheens as a back up and depth player. But who knows….perhaps he can develop great support play in the off season that impresses Sheensey. He's also stated clearly that he wants the fullback jersey for himself. apparently he did well in that cycling session that the team did. Going to be an interesting off season.

We had a decimated backline for most of last season and he couldn,t get much of a run..really don't like his chances next year ,your either in or out unfortunatly.

I'm not sure Helmsey… I think that we probably have better options on the wing in Grant and Utai.

Utai on the wing again? No thanks. Strong and hard to tackle yes, but way too slow to cut it out on the wing and a liability in defence and under the high ball. If Lote or Beau break down, Brown gets first crack followed by Grant IMO.
