Moving Forward ......

Well forumers we have had a mixed feeling of success this year, some say we overachieved and some say we underachieved,I myself think we had a good year albeit surrounded by controversy…

Now that some of the dramas have been settled we need the management and coaching staff to move toward making next year even better, during the off season we may have some new faces in the squad and hopefully a decent defensive coach come on board,

I don't wish to make this a Taylor bash,he needs to complete his tenure which is this next season..Brooks and Moses will have another NRL season under their belt and surely if Brooks doesn't show signs of improving his defense or controlling the team better, then we must consider if he is worth persevering with,Moses is developing better,Teddy will be even better especially with a taste of origin under his belt...

the priority I feel is the financial constraints we have had and the sooner they are dealt with the better,we need to buy quality players in key positions as many on here have stipulated over the last couple of seasons, very rarely in this arena do players play for little if they can get more elsewhere, that's why the more financial clubs have better squads, with good management and business skills we can achieve this, however it is done overtime and not overnight..

I am hoping that we are competitive next season and to be in the 8 would be awesome, however, being a cautious person,if that happens I will be over the moon, but realistically, 2018 should be our highlight year with better recruiting and financial stablility it should keep us in good stead for the future,

this is just my opinion of course but I would like others input if you have similar or different views.,.

only reply with forward year thoughts please ( don't want this to become RF or JT thread)

Next season is important for our team and coach, if we start the season well and the team is performing i would say that the club will look to resign those key players to long term contracts and then may look to sign JT as well, then he can look to buy for 2018 filling the gaps in the playing squad.

If they struggle and Brooks isn't holding up, we should look to move JT on as soon as possible so a new coach can take control and start to shape the team for 2018 and beyond. I think that 2018 onwards will be our time and subject to no capitulation in the office and with player contracts it should be.

I still think with the right pack that Teddy, Brooks and Moses (brooks and moses would also have to work on defence) could be our long term solution and even challenge for blues and kangaroo's spine in years to come.

Agree well said, I am over the terrible decisions back ended deals over the last decade. Hopefully with a couple of hard heads added and Taylor signs a defensive coach that will at least fix the defensive issues 2017 might turn out ok , I do see light at the end of the tunnel at long last!,
I see 2018 as the year of the Tiger as the cap issues should he behind the club and some quality could be bought in and if Taylor does fail next season an expireanced NRL coach can be appointed to attract better players as well.i think that after next season there will be a few coaches on the market.

That's exactly what the club has to do now….7 or 8 wks to refresh then into steering the ship back on track.
We must be mindful to get a very good defence coach, think someone mentioned fitzgibbon on here earlier would be a great candidate. At the same time a goal kicking coach wouldn't go astray. Then hopefully we can have an uninterrupted off season full of hard work and team building and leave any rubbish to other clubs. We can only go forward if these things are met. If we could sign either a quality centre or backrower that would be a bonus. But let's get behind the mightys and cheer them into 2017 finals.

Fitzgibbon do both? Would save some money….

With any business the path to success begins with removing its debts especially those that hang around for years. Wests Tigers has taken a huge step forward in this direction over the past two years and despite the self imposed cost constraints the club has shown gratifying improvement on the field. The first grade came within one point of qualifying for the semi finals and the club's state cup and under 20's side have qualified in the semi finals of their respective competitions. Each of these two teams have a good chance of at least qualifying for the grand final.

Like most things in life you have to do the hard yards before improvement can occur. The club has accepted these hard yards and the rewards will begin to emerge more clearly.

This is all pretty obvious stuff.
Only thing I'd add is if we fail to make the 8 again next year then I would want to see a massive Manly styled clean out of players and staff. They would have had three years to get their stuff together and failure again confirms they are not a good combination.

I won't hold my breath though because as talented as they are, they are a gutless bunch of footballers who fold collectively when the going gets tough.

Once we have money and the cap is sorted right out,we should be able to buy a couple of quality players…
Im completely over the "overhyped, overated and over paid potential " we have, next year is time to deliver the goods otherwise dont let the door hit you on the arse on the way out...

Exactly what I said to my family whilst watching the Canberra debacle, "This is gutless." First grade players should be able to make one on one tackles and not stand back watching the opposition stroll through our line. Nevertheless, I don't expect a better outcome next year but I'd like to see JT given a shot in 2018 after the purse strings have been loosened.

And this is why I think we need a new coach now not next year when we are failing again, we didn't turn up twice in 3 weeks with our season on the line.
If JT couldn't lift these guys for a first tilt at semi final football twice in 3 weeks he is not the man for the job, not with standing his failure on his defence mantra and accountability non policy.
I honestly believe we need a new coach now, we have a stack of players off contract next season and we will look to re-sign some and recruit some more, I feel we will be in a far better position to do this with a different coach who is locked in past 2017.
Players want to know who is coaching before re-committing or signing from another club, and I think we really can't afford to gamble with JT in such an important year for the club, if we stuff it up next year we will be paying for it for quite a few years.
And therefore I think we need a Cleary, Toovey or the likes leading us into a defining year in our clubs short history, people will just say, you just hate JT, I won't lie I do and I have no faith in him as first grade head coach, his ceiling is assistant coach where he goes alright, above that position is beyond him.

irrespective if you hate JT or not,he deserves his last year to see how well we go without the RF dramas and a lot of the cap mess..take a minute to think about what Styker said about soft, gutless footballers, they may not be what some think they are, quality is whats needed, not overated and still learning or fringe first graders as many suggest we have…

Sounds great but I don't believe a word of this. It's not as simple as what you are trying to make out.

Maybe some people hate JT but I don't. I think though he has been beyond ordinary. I also think he caused the RF dramas. I also think we are going to be playing RF a lot next year out of our cap for no output so basically I think our cap next year has gone backwards.

Our squad is really good. We don't have a bunch of fringe first graders at all. We have a couple of weak positions in hooker, a winger and maybe an edge backrower. Overall though our squad is good.

I expect to walk into the top 8 next year assuming a good run with injuries.

You have to clear the problems at the foundation before you can begin to fix the problems higher up. Not vice versa. It applies to most things in life.

I think it is pointless arguing over who should be head coach next year. It will be Taylor because he has done enough to earn another year. Maybe it's time to accept that and try think objectively instead of subjectively for a change. Focus on some of the positives. Tsylor was a great goal kicker and anyone who tries to argue otherwise is a fool. He also had a good kicking game. Tigers need a goal kicker and it's disappointing that Taylor hasn't been able to develop the goal kicking skills of any of the players. Moses is an ok goal kicker and while I think he is a valusble asset to the team he never really looks like he is bothered about the goals he misses. Even the importalnt ones. Of course maybe that is just my subjective.

Why would we appoint a goal kicking coach?? JT was one of the best sharp shooters in the game. surely it's one area I'm confident JT would have the knowledge to pass on his expertise but it seems it's another area that he lacks as a coach.

Stryker, I agree that a clean out could be on the cards. I don't agree that they are gutless. Anyone who plays rugby league is not gutless. Sure we'd like them to be more aggressive, run harder, tackle harder and stand up for their mates more but i don't see them as gutless. I'd love for a few old school forwards who go out there and smash the opposition each week but i can't agree that they are gutless.

That's one of the things that concerns me most about JT's coaching, he was a very good goal kicker and kicker in general play and none of that seems to have been passed on to our team. Our last play kick options were not the best, we only occasionally were able to maintain pressure with repeat sets and we had this desire to bomb the opposition more often than not, which rarely paid off.
