My Letter to Tim Sheens

Dear Tim

I write this letter to you as a result of the recent match against the Raiders in Rd 4 of the 2012 NRL season.
Firstly, I want to say that I am a big fan of yours. As a fellow St Dominic’s College student, I’ve always had an interest wherever you coached, and was very excited when you agreed to coach the Tigers from 2003 onwards. That excitement was justified when you coached the team to a premiership in 2005, and for that I will be forever grateful.

I want to wish you luck this week in what is your 650th First Grade game as a coach, a feat which shows what a great coach you are.

But in saying all that, I, like many other Wests Tigers fans and members of the club, were left scratching our heads when the team was revealed at 6pm Monday Night in the game against Canberra.

I understand what effect injuries and suspensions have on teams, and in the first 3 games this year we have copped enough to last a season, but I, and many Tigers fans, would like an explanation as to why we went into the match with a bench containing a fullback turn halfback, and a winger turn centre.

Canberra boast the biggest pack in the NRL. They are big, strong, powerful, and given the performance of the team in the previous round against St George Illawarra, would have been confident of running over the top of our young pack.

Aaron Woods and Matt Groat are both going to be accomplished NRL front rowers, in years to come. They are young, they are green, and against the Dragons were severely exposed. Most assumed that this area would be rectified against the Raiders, but you went into the next game by dropping another Front Rower from the bench (who for the record offered the most impact and was one of our best performers against the Dragons), and adding a specialist back line player.

Over the years, the game has changed dramatically, and gone are the days where you only need a strong starting 13 to compete. The game is so fast, that a strong squad of 17 is a must to compete, especially in games where the opposition is as big as that raiders pack is.

I cannot question the effort or commitment of the team on Monday night. Their goal line defence which was so shaky the previous week was much improved, and the scramble defence in denying the raiders numerous tries was outstanding. We went into halftime with a lead on the back of this effort, despite the Raiders having numerous opportunities to score, and despite some of the players starting to look tired.

Then came the second half, and the tiredness of only using a squad of 15 players really showed. Instead of having fresh players on the field, our forwards were tired, there was no line speed at all, players started dropping off tackles, and after being completely dominated in the ruck by a raiders team that was aggressive and strong in the play the ball, they had plenty of time to spread the ball wide and let Campese run the show.

Canberra were able to make easy metres, and I can only put that down to our players being tired. We were coming off a 10 day turn-a-round, so fatigue should not have been an issue. It was however, because of the squad and in particular bench you selected.

I am not sure how you expected or more likely hoped the game would pan out, and would love to hear your reasoning behind picking 2 backline players on the bench, but looking from afar, there was ever only going to be one outcome with a bench like we had.

The game has changed Tim, and it’s time you change with it.

Good luck on Sunday, good luck in 2012, and GO THE TIGERS.

Drible Drible Drible …..... Although I agree that more forwards on the bench would be good , I was cringing the whole time i read it ......

There is good reasons as to
Why Tim sheens has coached so many games , one of them is defiantly because he doesn't listen to people like you .

I suppose this may have been an effective way of venting for you , but not much else .

I didn't hve an issue with the Humble selection There was no way Fulton could last 80 at hooker and fulton did a reasonable job while out their

But Meaney selection was puzzling and I'd be interested to listen to Tim's reasoning for that

I personally would prefer we take the risk the a back gets injured and us tinkering a little bit than having our forwards run out of steam

Great post Tigerdale. I've always been a Sheens supporter but in recent weeks he's really had me scratching my head. This week he's named Ayshford and Meaney on the bench - again 2 backs. Wtf?!?!?

If you feel the need to write and letter all good. But why post it on a forum. Letter is for Tim. Not everyone else. Or are you just looking for a pat on the back and a bit of light to shine on you.

Your letter is now pointless. It's no longer to him. It's to everyone.

If people feel the need to write to WT management so be it. But no need to gloat that you have done it

did starting your reply with "Drible Drible Drible" make you feel better. Was this an effective way for you to justify your opinion?

I agree he probably wont agree or take any notice of the letter, but I'm glad Dale feels passionate enough to draft a letter and have the balls to post it here for us all to read.

Well done Dale!

It was just the style of post he chose - and I think chose well.

And as to the content of the letter - I think you have noted what many others haven't Tigerdale. The commitment was good on Monday as was the defence given the amount of ball Canberra had. We have been giving the opposition too many opportunities and all defences will crack with weight of posession going against to the extent we have been conceding.

Well said, Tigerdale
Good on you for feeling the need to write this letter to Sheensy.
Hope you get a reply but I doubt it.
If you do get a reply your better of keeping it to your myself. You'll probably get bagged for posting it as well.

Good on ya Tigerdale.

Don't listen to knockers.

Sheens may not read it, but I hope he does.

If more people simply came on and said "here here" then maybe that letter might get somewhere.

Heighno, Blair, Ellis are 80min players.

Who do you replace in the team? The 2 starting front rowers.

Hence 2 additional front rowers on the bench for rotation.

That leaves 2 bench spots. One to cover dummy half because Fulton cant last 80min in his new position and a reserve back in case of injuries/possible impact player.

When the team gets slammed in the penalty count and doesn't touch the ball for 20 odd minutes in the second half, credit goes to the Raiders for maintaining pressure, there will be consequences.

Consequences for lack of possession: Fatigue, high missed tackles, lack of metres, lack of hit ups, errors, more penalties. A vicious circle.

Some of the players have let down the team and deserve to be dropped.

Sheens has done that with his team selection and has fine tuned the obvious halves problem.

The coach is trying to find a solution to a problem that started with the loss of Lui, Tredesco, Galloway, Utai, Tuquiri and Farah.

Any team with that much disruption to key positions will struggle.

Patience people.

I think back to one of my first posts on here at the beginning of the year, I was saying how i have faith in Tim Sheens. someone wrote back and said that people will want to get rid of sheens after the 2nd or 3rd week if we aren't winning. (this happens every year apparently) so this isn't the first or last time that people have called for Tim Sheens' head. I don't think you can blame Tim Sheens for missing 39 tackles and dropping the ball, can you??????

He does not listen to anyone. Have you noticed how we are going this year? We have only won one game, and that was a lucky 1 point victory.

Grow up.

His bench selections have been ludicrous to say the least. I think he has been at the Weststigers far to long. A change is what is needed for both the supporters and I suspect, the players.
