FORMER Canterbury premiership-winning coach Steve Folkes has thrown his hat into the ring for either of the two coaching jobs on offer at Wests Tigers.
>
The Tigers are not only looking for someone to lead the NRL side but for an overseer of the football department in a system already in use at Penrith with Phil Gould, Parramatta with Daniel Anderson, and Melbourne with Frank Ponissi.
>
“Either really,” Folkes said yesterday when asked which job he was interested in, just days after being appointed coach of the Jillaroos, the Australian women’s rugby league team. He also works part-time as an NRL video referee.
>
“Football has been my life. I want to be involved with the game, as I am at the moment, so a coaching director-type role would be good or the head coach,” he said.
>
Folkes worked under Tim Sheens for two seasons (2010-11) as conditioner-trainer and as an assistant coach, after taking the Bulldogs to the 2004 premiership. His knowledge of the game would also be beneficial as football director.
>
“It depends on what they’re looking for and what the board wants to get out of the next few years in the Tigers’ development,” Folkes said.
>
**Folkes said he not been approached by anyone from Wests Tigers** but his name has been mentioned in the mix alongside former Brisbane mentor Anthony Griffin, former Parramatta NRL coach Jason Taylor — now an assistant at the Sydney Roosters — and ex coach Mick Potter’s assistant David Kidwell, former St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown and former Gold Coast boss John Cartwright.
>
Potter has already nominated Brown as a likely successor.

Linked… but according to the man himself yet to be approached

All these possible names for coaching being banded around .. But know one has been approached . Do these potential coaches need to apply through an online employment agency ??

FOLKES wouldn't cop crap from Robbie .. Period . He wouldn't have the balls to take on FOLKES . FOLKES would hand him a pair of side cutters and say " the fence is over there … See ya " !

I get the impression that coaches never win premierships when they leave their first club without one. I'm sure there are arguments to the contrary but all the premiership winning coaches currently in the NRL won at least one at their first NRL club I think. Bennett, Bellamy, Hasler, Robinson … For this reason I'd want either Folkes or a newbie like Brennan. I've changed my tune on the other guys.

Did Folkes not win a premiership as coach with Canterbury in 2004 or have I got my facts mixed up ?
