It's a sad story indeed. If I was to fathom a guess I would say that he was probably tripping going by the story. No way to handle a tripper.

I actually think the police need better training on identifying and reacting to mentally broken people that goes beyond "shoot them".

I agree MacDouall. Shooting someone should be the absolute final option.

It does sound like they had little choice here though….......

Police said two officers arrived at the property about 8.10pm (AEST) in Billirimba Road at Rocky River.

"When the police arrived, he was about to stab a woman," the statement said.

The two officers confronted the man, and he dropped the knife and ran into the bush.

The group was directed to pack up and leave under police escort, but the man appeared before their convoy brandishing a loaded crossbow with five additional bolts.

"He demanded of the police to place their weapons on the hood of their police vehicle," the statement said.

The man continued to approach as the officers pleaded for him to drop the crossbow but he would not comply.

"Two of our group were in the assailant's line of fire. He then threatened the female officer, and she shot a Taser at him, but missed, and the male officer immediately defended us and shot the man.

Rainbow members worked to revive the man, which they did twice, but they were exhausted and his pulse faded.

I don't want to pass judgement on this individual case so understand that I'm speaking generally…

Police officers really don't want to shoot people and the ones who have to are extremely effected by having to do so. At the end of the day, even if the person is mentally ill or not in complete control of their actions, they need to act to protect the public and sometimes themselves. It's easy to pass judgement but being in those situations is a totally different matter. Having worked with a lot of coppers over the years I can honestly say the majority of them are ordinary people trying to do what they believe in.

My condolences go out to the Pringle family for their loss. Losing a family member is the toughest thing anyone can go through.

Ive been through the police academy training they do more Mental Health Training the any other issue. But the safety of members of the public and the officers involved is the most important . No matter what your excuse is if u come at the police with a weapon u r able to fatally kill someone U have made up your mind . Not many ppl can disarm an agitated person with a knife without getting stabbed . He was Tasered and didnt affect him ?? and he had previously used a crossbow ?? . Sad for his family im just glad the officers got to go home safely tough job to perform .

As I understand it the taser missed

I am not speaking because of this isolated incident. It has been well documented that rise in police shootings and the large majority of them are shooting mentally unfit people. I understand that in this situation it may have been completely necessary but it is not always and it really needs to be looked into.

I also know that most coppers are ordinary people, being that the average person is a pretty untrustworthy person in pressure situations it applies to cops as well. I have met some really great people that are police officers, and I have also met some absolute scum bags that are cops. I'm sure those two react differently to different situations.

But until it's more attractive to be a cop they have to take what they can get more or less. Assholes, dumb people and of course the good.

Police shootings are terrible for everyone involved….condolences to the Pringle family and thoughts with the copper as well, he'd be feeling horrible as well.
