New Faces at Training

Many posts placing a lot of hope on Douiehi,based on half a game.We are very skinney in the 5/8 position in case it does not work or injury which is common in the halves ,who do we play? Tannous i believe is a year away.Mbye may go ,and then what?AfterFB most think we need either lock or 2nd rower,to me it is 5/8.

For this year we have Madden, Talau and Walters who can fill in. If by the end of the year it's not working out with him there then I say we go to market for a proper half for 22.

I have confidence he will deliver though.

We have Doueihi, Mbye, and then Madden, Walters, Momo/Talau if necessary. Some well paid players some young ones. The kind of balance most teams have. Just need 1-2 to perform

I don't understand your point? You're worried about AD being untested but then want Madden who hasn't played any FG before?

AD was a 6 his entire junior career, played junior rep in the 6 and has publicly stated thats his most comfortable position... I say he has a better chance at succeeding in the 6 considering he has played FG for a few years now compared to Madden being none. AD is a big body and has a great pass.

Most teams don't have established halves as backups, most are untested and juniors.

Talau played 6 throughout his juniors, so did Walters as stop gap back ups for injury I would say they're fine. We even have Momo who has played 6 before. Again...if AD doesnt fire (give him an entire year) then we go to market in 22 for a good established half since we have the money for it.

Rating: B: James Tamou’s exactly what the Tigers have needed. A good club man, a standard-setter and someone who leads by example. The acquisitions of Joe Ofahengaue and James Roberts fall under the category of wait and see. On their day both can break games open, at their worst they both can leave you scratching your head.

The problem for Ofahengaue has been that he’s moved from middle to edge to bench again and again. That can’t be good for your development, so hopefully a settled role will bring the best out of him. Roberts, meanwhile, comes with some baggage but the Tigers insist he’s in a good space physically and mentally and if that continues then he remains one of the competition’s great attacking threats. There’s a lot of good whispers about hooker Jake Simpkin who, with just Jacob Liddle in front of him, may get a shot at first grade in 2021.

Going off the recent photos it looks like the squad has had a few players cut. Has there been any more news on the train and trial players, e.g. Gebbie, Tyrone Roberts Davis, Allan Fitzgibbon?

Yeah looks like most of the young fellas are gone. Fitzgibbon is still there, I think Tumeth and O’Kane are still there, yet to see Roberts-Davis and Ky Rodwell back at training. Gebbie wasn’t named in the PNG hunters squad so assuming he’s coming soon

Edit: looks like Roberts Davis is there still.

I don't think Gebbie is coming at all. A lot of the younger guys were given 3 weeks to train with the top 30 and have now dropped down as the training intensifies.

He even acknowledged he was too slow for fullback, not his fault but some people just aren’t born with natural speed.

It’s a strange situation. Not named to play over in PNG but no sign of him here either.

Also played through injury and showed a lot of passion for the club. I think if we have success this year a lot will be said about the quality of our halves.

OK, My reasons,Doeihe was a panick buy same as Momo,there were not many options.I doubt we had Hartigan then,.Since then we have tried to validate their worth by changing positions,they are both average players.Doehi,TT,Momo were not bought to play in the halves,even though they may have played some football in that position.The only player that would get a contract in another club as a half is Madden.The rest is smoke and mirrors.I have said i like Doeihi and hope he kills it.so why my doubts? He is not big,he is tall ,lanky and not quick,as a centre maybe but at 5/8 they will run around him,and target him.The others,may have beeen good in junior sides and TT was probably 2 stone lighter.I know I;m the odd man out here,but i just call it as i see it.

What I enjoyed most about the highlights is the confidence of the young man to get on the outside of his opponent and back himself in a sprint. I am so thorughly sick of watching wingers step back inside when there is a clear channel down the wing because they are 'strong runners' ie lack genuine pace.

Tuiaki would do it . And he’d throw his opposite number into halfway across the field, and he was away to get a full head of steam to run over the fullback . God I miss him .
