Tonight, the members of Newcastle Knights voted to accept the bid from Nathan Tinkler to take over ownership of the club. Blocker Roach (Channel 1HD tonight) commented that the move will ensure the survival of the Newcastle Club. Congratulations to the Knights however may you always be second to the Wests Tigers.

My apologies shouldn't have posted this post in this thread, if someone knows how to move it to perhaps the discussion topic then please do so.

Why congratulate them - all he did was pay their debts & guarantee sponsorship of $10M per year (& only to make up for possible shortfalls - meaning his total outlay per year for ten years could be $0)!!

We already have combined sponsorship that well surpasses that figure!

It is like us handing ownership of the Tigers to Triguboff for naming rights!!! The people are being dudded big time!!!

He got them for $1 and a promise!!!!

He is not as rich as he is due to his personal or corporate expenditure/largesse!!!!!!

Out of interest, what is the Wests Tigers combined sponsorship worth?

Topic moved Cunno.

I kind of agree with Red. The members would not have had access or cared for the legal fine print and they would have taken the deal on face value.

It still doesn't excuse the poor management of the club over the last two decades to the point where it was nearly insolvent.

That said, their fans consider it a win, and I expect that Tinkler's messiah aura will last as long as Newcastle are performing. The knives will come out after a few lean years.

It has not been formally published - but we do have the richest jersey/shorts combo in Sydney - estimated at between $12-15M!!!

Our club is becoming non-reliant on Leagues Club revenues or supposed sugar-daddies!!!

We have had the exact same thing happen with our golf course where a local sports club bought the whole club for $1 (we had debts of about $340000) for five years at which stage we had option of buying club back at the end of 5 years for a $1 . Club is now back at break even and voted to continue with sports club running the golf course These deals can work

Good to hear that Wests Tigers is in a strong financial position, well done club administrators.

Happy - unlike the other vanity-driven magnates (i.e. Crowe/Holmes'a'Court - Penn/Delmege - Tinkler) our bloke - Harry (who comes from supporting the Balmain side by the way) will NEVER seek **ownership** of the club in return for his investment!!

Red, red, red, your not one of those blokes are you?

Mate, he is running it as a non-profit (meaning he doesn't make anything!) and there is a clause that the members can buy it back at any time for the amount Tinkler chucks in. For that 'privilege' he is paying $4mil plus $2.5 mil p.a guarantee for junior development PLUS guaranteeing $10mil p.a in ad revenue which is a massive risk if there is a major scandal… like I don't know.. like what happened last year with Houston?

Come on man, how much do you want the guy to pay for a non-for-profit organization?

Yeah agree not saying he will try and take over but I am sure he will help ensure our signing of Tim Sheens

Mate - I am sick of hearing/reading the term "benefactor" applied to these private owners!!

They may take liability for some debt from cash-strapped & weak club's - but their ownership belies long-term shallow pockets & a view to get a return on their minimal investment via a commercially-driven exit strategy!!

They just want to hold the Premiers Trophy - get the photos taken & frick off (just look at Max Delmege)!!!!

Harry's investment will be re-paid in positive PR/media coverage - and that is ALL he wants!!!

He only flicked us when Lamb, Hoppa, Field & Buddha made us a laughing stock!!!

Hammer - I am one of those blokes who does not believe in altruism from hard-nosed businessmen in these cases!!! Forgive me for my cynicism - but as a contracts man - I can assure you any clause for repatriation of the club would be very much in Tinkler's favour!!

tinkler got 97% of vote, it hasnt stopped me puttin crap on fellow novacastrians on facebook tellin them how much better they are now just look at what the gladiator has done for souths what will king coal bring to newy we know already its not" benny"
by the way they bite bad toooooo funnnny

So Red You don't think that Harry will help us sign Sheens . He has already openly stated he wants Tim to stay at club . (As do most of us ) . It doesn't worry me if he does . I'm simply stating that if things get close to us losing Tim he will help in any way possible .

Mate - Harry has all the time in the world for Sheensy & will exert his significant influence in driving the Board to re-sign him! (And will do what is needed to secure that deal!!)

But as I said - he is not out to run or own the club - and is only seeking compensation for his outlay via being part of a quality club and receiving the positive exposure/publicity that comes with that!!

Mate, Harry waited till we were successful to throw the big bucks behind us again. He could see we have a competent board, great players and a good brand.

Tinkler has to fix a organization that has in-fighting and under performed for a decade. There is only one way to do that, and it's not from sponsorship.

Harry will get far more return from his investment than Tinkler will!

You make some very good points Hammer!

However ownership ensures potential for a bloke to dictate to the Board - and that is a recipe for disaster (e.g. Crowe driving the Inglis purchase while ignoring the club's needs in other critical positions - & their salary-cap balance in coming years)!!!

When Crowe referred to Inglis as "the LeBron James" of our game on Leno - he displayed exactly how his dollars & profile have not given him a genuinely better grasp of the basic technical aspects of the game (such as - forwards win you games & no one man can dominate a league game from the backs - unlike basketball)!!! He is a dunce when it come to league - despite his passion!!!

Did he ever turn up to Souths games before buying them??? NO!!!

It is a "vanity" investment - and I believe Tinkler's bid is either the same - or it is a means of getting Novocastrians onside before a commercial prospect of his bites them on the arse!!!

He lives in Brisbane for Christ's sake - as if he gives a toss about Newcastle people!!!!

It's not for vanity. I'm actually a novocastrian, my old man has had dealings with Tinkler. Apparently he is a very, quiet reserved man. He actually hates being in the press.

You have to remember also, both these clubs were in dire straights (Knights less so). Rusty wouldn't have purchased Souths if they were at the top of the table, nor would have Tinkler. So, it can't be purely based on ego.

In both cases, their investment is far more significant than Harry's and far more risky. So you can't say he did it for business reasons. Him moving away from Newcastle doesn't mean he isn't passionate about it. Im from Newy and I live in Sydney. Novocastrians love their city no matter where they go.

Personal ownership just means he has the ability to correct the course if the club starts being stupid. Can you blame him with the history? As far as i'm concerned, it's just as risky as having a faction driven board. Can you say Parramattas business is run better than the Knights purely because they have a board?

Tinkler will prove the doubters wrong, just like Rusty has.
