WHEN Andrew Fifita runs out in a Cronulla jersey on Friday night, understand why the Wests Tigers need to make some tough decisions on the future.
>
As wonderful a player as Benji Marshall is, within weeks you are going to see why the Tigers must do everything to keep this kid.
>
The only reason Luke Brooks hasn't played first grade before now is because the Tigers face a similar salary cap problem that prevented Penrith from recently playing Matt Moylan in the top grade.
>
But in the coming weeks coach Mick Potter plans to go to the NRL and seek a special salary cap exemption so that Brooks can play with the big boys.
>
For any Tigers fans who hasn't seen him yet, get a copy of the recent under-20s game against Canberra and you will understand why he is being talked up as the next Andrew Johns.
>
With the Tigers trailing late in the game against the best side in the Holden Cup, Brooks produced a stunning and unexpected 40/20 kick from a 20m restart - and then scored the winning try with a powerful charge that was reminiscent of Johns at his scheming best.
>
While Brooks won't be in the top grade on Friday night, taking on the Tiger-Sharks should reinforce why it is crucial Brooks' deal is extended beyond the end of next season.
>
The Tigers simply can't afford to let him be the next Andrew Fifita and there is talk Brooks has already been offered a huge deal at another NRL club for 2015.
>
Potter has stated he wants Benji at the club next year to help mentor the club's next generation.
>
It is important to note Benji is signed until the end of 2015 and has been offered what it is understood to be a generous upgrade for that period.
>
Benji's manager is pushing for an extension to run until 2017 and there is now speculation he could be lost to Super Rugby next season to play with the Auckland Blues.
>
But while Blues coach John Kirwan said Benji might need to consider a pay cut to make the switch, his manager wants more money to stay at the Tigers - which in turn could put in jeopardy Brooks' future and that of promising five-eighth Mitchell Moses, who is also off-contract at the end of next year.
>
After a dreadful start to the year, the Tigers have done a tremendous job to get themselves back in finals contention with four wins from their past five games.
>
Despite their terrible run of injuries, Potter has blooded some exceptional young players like David Nofoaluma and Tim Simona, and Brooks will be the next.
>
Potter also deserves credit for the loyalty he has shown his players after it was revealed in The Sunday Telegraph that the real reason for Benji's benching back in round 10 was because he broke the club's strict no-alcohol policy while on the medical list.
>
Potter chose to keep that out of the media and as a result wore the brunt of the criticism after the Tigers were flogged 54-10 by Souths.
>
But that defeat proved a turning point in their season and it's no coincidence Benji's form has improved significantly since.
>
Adam Blair is another who has benefited directly because of Potter's support after the coach publicly backed him when everyone else wanted him sacked.
>
As Blair explained yesterday: "It gives you confidence when you have your coach out there sticking up for you."
>
Better than anyone, Blair understands the pressure Potter is under given the constant speculation about his future.
>
The experienced prop reckons Potter has proved he "has the balls" to make tough calls.
>
You just wonder at what point the people sharpening the knives to stick in Potter's back will give up on their agendas and start supporting a coach who has proved that his loyalty is to his players.

Jeeze, hows that for pressure. Awful piece of sensationalism really.

Although I do like the mention about possibly blooding Brooks.

Last time I heard a halfback described as the new Joey he had retired from the NRL by the age of 25 to become a boxer. For those of you playing it home I am talking about Joe Williams. Why do the journos always have to go for the "New XYZ" tags, if they're even close to the player they're being compared they won't need to be likened to anyone else.

Sounds exciting doesnt it …....... next Andrew Johns playing in black, white and gold .......... how good would that be.

He is actually really reminiscent of Joey. Johns said he reminded him of himself at 18 just better.

As i said in the other thread dedicated to him, the last player i head with so much attention before his debut was Tim Smith. Seems as though the kids that go the furthest are the ones who come out of nowhere like Reynolds and Cherry-Evans. I don't think players who have labels put on them have a very good track record of succeeding. Can't remember the last player who ever lived up to a comparison.

I agree with you there gnr.

If he turns out to be half as good as joey johns that will be good enough for me.

For those wondering, it is the Knights that have made a play for Brooks. Bennet wants a Mullen/Brooks halves. I hope we can keep him. Would spend 1m on keeping our juniors.

Cherry Evans had all the same attention but not in the NSW media. He tore the Qld Cup apart

**Good Call. Very very good call.** Tim Smith, Jarrod Mullen and Chris Sandow spring to mind… And Jamie Soward to a certain extent. Blake Lazarus, Jacob Miller, Sean Meaney, Robert Lui.

Nothing is certain. You can have a top player, but he might be a boozing grub, he might be injury prone, or he might be a bottler on the big stage.

Does anyone have any issues with a back in form Benji Marshall playing with the Next Joey Johns?

In light of this weeks game, talk to Cronulla about big wraps on juniors. Luke Branighan and Blake Green are two names that come to mind for me… massive wraps and didn't amount to much at all. Cronulla also signed up the "next SBW" Karl Filiga and he did SFA.

This is not correct at all.

DCE and Reynolds did not come from no where, both were stand out players in under age football and had a very strong progression to NRL. Both were stars in Schoolboy football, stars in NYC, DCE was managed slowly and spent a year in QLD cup, where he starred. Reynolds was injured his year after NYC, both were expected by everyone involved in Junior development to be excellent first graders.

I found it amusing reading in the paper that DCE was "unwanted" as a kid, Brisbane went with Ben Hunt ahead of him, however 3 NRL clubs and the Waratahs were all very interested, not exactly unwanted.

Tim Smith on the other hand came from no where, rare, he shot the lights out for a short period of time and got some hyoe and got a run in first grade and shot the lights out for a season and was a stand out rookie of the year. Pretty similarly to Danial MOrtimer, he was well down the list of prospective NRL candiadates, well behind Albert Kelly who has returned from no where, hit a rare patch of form at the right time, got a run in NRL and grabbed it with both hands. Matt Moylen is the same now.

In general the best players of an age group (comp wide) go on to be at least decent first graders, not all kick on to be stars, other things come into play at that point.

Brooks is certainly the best schoolboy halfback I have seen, the comparison to Joey is going to be ever present, he kind of moves like him and has a similar body shape.

But to throw up some names that lived up to the hype Inglis, Karmiachael Hunt, Craig Gower, Hodges, Shane Webcke, Ryan Hoffman, Benji

We are heading down the same path again. We all know there a no guarantees with Brooks and yet we're prepared to go into next year without a first grade experienced halfback. Ffs sign someone, our history shows no decent halfback, no semis.

Seen plenty of kids blitz it in the juniors than go belly up when they hit the NRL. Anyone who has seen this kid play will know he will make it and make it quick. The likes of Peter Stirling and Greg Alexander made the transition in no time and I expect Brooks to do the same. Iam sure their are plenty of people at the JV trying to keep the kids head in the right space.

The only negative to all this hype is, his price is going up by the day and I would imagine most clubs will be having a dip at him.Lets hope a generous offer and some good old fashion loyalty prevails

If Brooks is the one who is mustard then we should sign him and thats fair enough.

A lot fo the the talk has been on **Brooks AND Moses**. That worries me a bit because we kinda did the same thing with Woods and Groat a few years ago assuming both were certain future stars… and I'm quite sure we factored that in when we let Fifita go to the Sharks. In their (woods and groats) case we were only **half right. It was obvious from day one that Woods had it and Groat was not in the same class.\
\
Of Course... its easy in hindsight but I get the feeling we could just as easily be making the same mistake. Esp if Benji decides to go.\
\
Benjis little step and swerve around Hoffman, and then the pass to Robbie in the lead up to Aysfords try against the storm.... we take things like that for granted now. It was perfect. No one else in the NRL does that. We're putting that right on the line for two kids who although talented... have proved nothing.\
\
I hope it works out for the best.**

Stuff the "Next Andrew Johns" … I hope one day someone is talking about the "Next Luke Brooks"

The only comfort I draw in us keeping Brooks is that in Pre season l recall reading an article with Brooks saying how honoured he was just training with the 1st grade side and being around people like Farrah who he idolized, and he did say that he was a Wests Tigers supporter and hoped to have a long career with the team he supports. But as we all know money talks, but the unrestleness in Marshall contract leads me to believe that Brooks is in advance talks in upgrading and extending his contract with us. Just my thoughts.
