Nicest player you've met

Hodgo & Buckets O'Neill

Buckets used to do the pressos at my sons jnr club….we lived near him and often saw him, and Hodgo is just all class too

Met Matt Utai once too on my own he seemed OK

Met Anthony Mundine at LO at a reggies game, very diff to ''The Man"

Good thread this, I like how these kinds of topics shed light that often an on-field personality isn't really anything like the player in real life. E.g. I think Mick Ennis is a top quality grub, but I've been told he's a really nice bloke off the field.

I've met a few players over the years, they are normally all nice blokes. I suppose playing a team sport, it would lend towards being a better player if you aren't a complete knob.

When I was younger I had a chat to Junior Pearce, made my day; my Dad also speaks highly of him from recent years with his professional speaking. Met Blocker and Sirro at the trots, also Frogs Eyes Russell Gartner in the late 80s. They were really nice to me as a young fellow and also my uncle, who was a mad-keen Tigers supporter and had a disability.

Recently had a chat with Timmy Brasher, ironically at a Souths members game vs Tigers, Bunnies brought him along. Nice guy, couldn't help but ask about the infamous offer withdrawal from Balmain before he left.

Best ever for me though was Marty Masella. When I was about 14 I stayed too late with my cousin at one Balmain training, big Marty let me use the club phone to call my folks and then he dropped me home once training was finished. Let me hold the tackle bags and all whilst he finished up. I was stoked at the time, got so many signatures on my Tigers footy.

Echoing ink, a mate of mine met Buckets on a night out; a few of the Tigers boys were out at the Orient. He said all the others wanted to do was smash drinks and hit on chicks, but he struck up a convo with Buckets and said he was a really nice and interesting bloke. My mate isn't even a Tigers supporter.

Another mate also said Tim Sheens is a rugby league encyclopedia; the hard part is not striking up a convo with Tim, but rather getting away from him once he's bent your ear for 20 mins.

And slightly off topic, but had a nice chat with Big Red's Dad at the start of the year, really nice bloke. Also only about 5'5" surprisingly.

I've met 100's of players and know many personally. In fact, I don't think there are that many players I have met who I wouldn't say weren't nice.

The nicest bloke I can think of is Danny Nutley. Such a polite bloke who is always honest. He always takes the time with kids (even to this day) and I've never heard him say anything negative.

Biggest surprise is Nate Myles. I've met him a few times and this big headed galoot is so focused on his family it is very uplifting to talk to.

Outside of RL, if you ever get the chance to chat to John Eales or Mark Taylor, you will be amazed.

Totally differentt bloke in person.

Very humble and friendly.

Noel Kelly. Always had time.

From the modern era Blair actually impressed me but I can't really go past Robbie Farah, a genuine nice bloke.

met Ellery Hanley out the front of a stadium one night , he was great to talk to and spent 15 - 20 min chatting with me and my son then we took some photos, really nice bloke.

Hodgo is a top guy, Plenty of them are as well, Also Steve Waugh is a great person as i have met him a few times & have been lucky enough to play Golf with him a couple of times.

this is a great thread. so nice to hear all the experiences and that there are so many good guys at the top level.

being from perth and playing aussie rules as a junior, all mine are afl players, so cant contribute much unfortunately. when the western reds were here i did meet dean lance (who was coaching them at the time - didnt chat) and julian oneill when they came in to where i was working; i was surprised at oneill because he was quite a decent guy!

i will say though, that until a couple of years ago, i couldnt stand thurston. but these days he is just an amazing ambassador for the game. heard him miked up during a game once and he picked out a kid in the crowd and told the ball boy to give his kicking tee to this particular kid. he also changes his head gear every half and gives that away to a kid too. i always notice too he will always lean down a bit and have both hands out as he runs on to the field between the lines of kids so they can all give him "low fives" if you will!

not sure where i ever heard this, but ive always known anthony mundine is only a tool via public image. he just says the most ridiculous things and has done himself no favours to the australian public, but i have heard he has done a lot for his community and is a very decent guy.

A great highlight, on a trip to Queensland back in the 80s, was meeting Johnny Sattler when he was the publican of the Queens Hotel in Southport. He came across as a great bloke plus he bought me a pot…!

Dont all be shocked I have met many a sportsperson in a variety of sports,Doug Walters is achampion bloke,

However the nicest person I met is Jamie Lyons.I work in a golf club and he came to play there one day with his manager, absolutely the most sincerest fellow I have met.Spoke at length with me about footy and golf and my mate is a deadset Manly supporter,so Jamie signed a cap for him without me asking…......

Outside of Rugby League Tim Horan is a lovely bloke

Patrick Johnson is a good bloke as well

Andy Bichel also another true gentleman

Used to live next door but one to Mark Geyer in South Penrith .. He may seem nice now , but he was a total knob back then .

Met Adam Goodes couple yrs back, good guy.

Use to go to a heap of golf tournaments when i was younger with my uncle. Met tonnes, Bernard Langer and Gary Player most notably. Met pretty much every Aussie golfer, all good guys. With the exception of Greg Norman. We were walking through a car park one day, (coincidentally at his own tournament which he didn't even make the cut for) and he was walking towards us with his bodyguard. I approached him, and his bodyguard ushered me away and Norman didn't say a word. Not like there was anyone around, the car park was bare, i guess 12 yr olds with a cap and texta are pretty dangerous. I had a low opinion of him before that anyway. My uncle had told me earlier about seeing him at another tournament when some guy approached him with his kid, and Norman flat out refused, saying he doesn't sign autographs that resulted with the kid walking away in tears. Norman is a germ.

One tournament i was at, Michael Campbell, the Kiwi golfer gave me 2 golf balls during his round walking from the green to the tee. A couple yrs later he won the US open. And do you think i kept them?

Met Chrissy Lawrence in 2010 in a TAB in the depths of crown casino in Melb. He was just a young bloke and he was genuinely surprised that someone recognised him. We ended up getting on the piss and talking footy wasa great afternoon.

Met Bruce Clark (former Tiger and Penrith prop from the late 1980's) at the footy one night when he was just standing there with his young son. Went up and said your Bruce Clark aren't you (and he nearly fell over…..don't think he gets recognised much). I told son that his dad was legend....a very good tough player. He gave me a nod and a wink as if to say thanks.....
