Dick Van Dyke turned 100 years old this week.
Here he is chatting with Sid James (filming Carry On Up The Khyber in 1968) on the Chitty Bang Bang back lot.

Flashback to On This Day | Colin Cowdrey’s Calm in the Chaos (1974)
🏏
✨

On this day in 1974, English cricket leaned on class, courage, and calm — all embodied in Colin Cowdrey.

At 42, Cowdrey was at home in Kent, thinking about Christmas, when an injury crisis changed everything. England were struggling in Australia, and a last-minute SOS call sent him halfway across the world. No warm-up. No easing in. Just straight into the fire.

Thrown into the Perth Test against a rampant Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson, Cowdrey faced the fastest, fiercest bowling attack of the era. He scored 22 and 41, but the numbers tell only part of the story.

The moment that lived forever?
As Jeff Thomson charged in, Cowdrey walked down the pitch, smiled politely, and said:
“Hello, I’m Colin Cowdrey. I don’t believe we’ve met.”

In an arena built on intimidation, Cowdrey answered pace with poise, fear with manners, and chaos with composure. It was vintage Test cricket — where temperament mattered as much as talent.

17 January 1999: When Ricky Ponting was banned for 3 matches for being beaten up in a nightclub:

On 17 January 1999, Ricky Ponting came home after a night out with his face and whole body battered and bruised after being beaten senseless by someone. When asked to identify who it was, he either wasn't able to or refused.
In response, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), then in charge of Australian Cricket (the equivalent of what is now Cricket Australia) banned him for 3 months.
