14 July 1982, unusual accident at Riverwood railway underpass on Bonds Road after a Bedford table-top truck carrying a 20ft container clipped a girder whilst passing under the bridge.

The truck was travelling south towards Peakhurst when his over height load struck the girder bringing it crashing down onto his cabin, trapping the driver.

Johnny Stewart retained the Westmead Speedcar Championship when he drove his Shell-Speed Sport Trackburner Offy to victory in the 20-lap event on July 9th.

During the running of the event Lew Marshall miraculously escaped serious injury when he flipped several times in the Berco Mobil Holden, then Stewart was attacked by a spectator who jumped the safety fence while the field was stopped and the wrecked midget was removed from the track.

It looked extremely bad for Marshall, but he escaped the wreck with only a dislocated thumb and bruises. At the checker from the re-run, it was Stewart 1st Clark 2nd Rush 3rd.
