44 years since giant Matilda winked at Australia
On 30 September 1982, Brisbane opened the Commonwealth Games with one of the most gloriously Australian ceremonies imaginable: a kookaburra call, a massive 13-metre mechanical kangaroo called Matilda doing a lap of QEII Stadium and winking at the crowd, before her pouch opened and little “joeys” came running out.
Even better, 6,500 schoolkids formed a map of Australia — without Tasmania.
