NRL bombshell: Penrith to lose star Michael Jennings thanks to feud with Phil Gould

THE Sydney Roosters are on the verge of signing NSW Origin centre Michael Jennings from Penrith effective immediately.

The Sunday Telegraph can reveal Panthers general manager Phil Gould's ongoing feud with Jennings has all but delivered the Blues strike weapon to rookie coach Trent Robinson at the Roosters' Allianz Stadium headquarters.

The coup for the Roosters would deliver the club its biggest Penrith junior since Brad Fittler defected to join then Tricolours coach Gould at Bondi Junction in 1996.

It also continues the big-name player exodus from Penrith under Gould and coach Ivan Cleary's tenure, following former captain Luke Lewis and Michael Gordon's defection to Cronulla last season.

The Roosters and Penrith are negotiating the terms of Jennings being granted a release from his $600,000 contract and a deal could possibly be finalised by as early as this week.

The story caught fire on social media yesterday after Panthers supremo Gould cryptically tweeted at 9.08pm last Friday: "Very difficult for any struggling team to rise out of the cellar when key players perform poorly and won't accept responsibility for results." Jennings' signature would deliver the Roosters one of the NRL's most potent attacking backlines, joining Mitchell Pearce, James Maloney, Shaun Kenny-Dowall, Anthony Minichiello and young guns Roger Tuivasa-Sheck and Tautau Moga.

A deal had all but been done for Jennings to join St George Illawarra at the end of last season only for his manager Isaac Moses to intervene and stipulate he did not want his client playing at the Dragons.

Jennings is Penrith's highest-paid player, who was signed to a ridiculous back-ended five-year contract under the Panthers' previous administration and has long been regarded as a problem child in Sydney's greater west.

His feud with Gould stretches back to this time last season, when the Panthers supremo called him into the club's Mulgoa Rd headquarters and delivered a spray over his attitude.

The result was Jennings started the season in scintillating form before breaking club rules on Anzac Day at Panthers Leagues club, leading coach Ivan Cleary to drop him to the NSW Cup outfit the Windsor Wolves.

NSW Origin coach Ricky Stuart then showed tremendous faith in Jennings, making him the first Blues player in 30 years to be chosen from reserve grade.

Jennings rewarded Stuart with five-star performances on the game's biggest stage as Penrith floundered at the foot of the NRL table.

It would be a very short sighted signing by the Roosters. The repercussions would be felt immediately, with a lot of young guys having another huge obstacle in front of their first grade career and could really jeopardise their chances of re-signing many really good players. They have some of the best young players in the game and a lot of them will be looking for upgrades come the end of this seasons. The amount of money that will be thrown at Kane Evans, RTS, Moga, Cordner et al when they're contracts run out will make the Roosters feel pretty stupid. Especially considering that Jennings is a noted under performer at club level and a halves pairing of Maloney/Pearce is, while decent, probably the most overpriced pairing in the NRL.

So they were struggling to fit sonny bill under the cap, but all of a sudden they have room for Jennings? that's an absolute joke. There's no way they could afford him. If anyone has room to move under the cap it would have to be us.

I can guarantee you Ricky Stuart would already be on the phone to him…. and ,seriously , as Fraze points out - how could the Roosters fit him under the cap?

Maybe penrith are still paying a lot of Jennings contract, they could be paying 500k of his contract and roosters only paying 100k

So what he will be like todd carney he will have one good year at the roosters and then he will have a shit year and then he will get sacked for off field stuff and then end up at another club.

Then doesn't that defeat the purpose of the cap? If the Roosters can squeeze Jennings in for 100K thats wrong, he's worth far more than that and to me it's an indirect form of cheating the salary cap.

The impending cap increase should ensure that the roosters can afford him

Would you still have complained if we signed Kite when we were sharing the cost 50/50 with Manly ?? Look at Wade MacKinnon a few years ago We didn't pay one cent for him 1st season we had him

How is it that Folau couldn't play for Parramatta unless he was registered at his perceived value, but the Cocks can pull this crap? There is some fair dinkum bias shown towards Easts… Seems that having the salary cap playing the large part of his career at your club pays off.

CB we are probably jumping the gun a bit yet

The Roosters haven't signed him yet , and then the ARLC would still need to register the contract

Maybe the Roosters will be forced to offload some players to fit him under the cap as well which may benefit us ,you never know

It's. valid point you make happy. But to compare Kite or McKinnon to Jennings is a bit rich. A state of origin centre or a 30 year old fullback with busted hammies.

Hardly a bombshell, Jennings' future has been talked about for over 6 months now. I don't see how the Roosters couldn't afford him, apart from SBW, Maloney and Pearce I can't see any of their players being on big bucks (well Mini would be, but would have long service concessions).

If he wants out Penrith will not be paying any of the fare.

He is one indescretion away from being terminated under his contract terms so Penrith will see where this lands

The roosters copped a breach for not declaring details or technilaties, theyve never been accused or found guilty of going over the s/c with SBW

This is how real clean outs, new brooms thru joints are performed….we arent even close to a clean out imo

Three years for MP
