James MacSmith needs to get out his dictionary when he's thinking up titles for his articles. "Forced" would indicate Marshall had no say in the matter. Far from it!

What a stupid article. No where in the article or the interview did Benji state that he was forced out or that he felt forced out.

It was a pretty damming interview on the footy show last night (which is obviously where this article came from). But there are certainly some inconsistencies in Benji's story

1) Given a deadine to take the deal or leave - he has 2 years left on a contract? Tallis raised this last night on the panel of the footy show. Certainly doesn't make sense to me.

2) Did it for his family - I'm pretty sure Zoe was starting to get into TV from league? Also had a few appeances as a commentator on MMM. Plus, Benji obviously has big money deals with 9 and the Tigers. How is leaving all of that (and possibly having to uproot from Sydney) good for the family? Especially without another contract signed.

3) He preaches about loyality and taking paycuts. This happens all the time to blokes in clubs that gave them their first start and invested in them. Pretty sure Slater, Cronk and Smith took massive cuts to stay with the storm. How about that being payback for their faith by looking after him at 16 and through his injuries? How much payback does Benji need?

I love the guy and I'm going to cheer him on until he is no longer a Tiger. He helped build this club and we wouldn't be in the great place we are today without him. He should be remembered alogn the same lines as blokes like Pierce, Blocker and Siro.

But lets be honest, it's Benji's ego here that made him leave. It's the only rationale that I can see.

This is what I think. I also think that he must have a poor support network around him for someone not to tell him that the best option was to take whatever he was offered.

He does it for his family??? Turns his back on a good offer to accept less elsewhere. Yet if he could have got it, he was happy to cop a $1mill a season deal and contract extension to dish up the sub-standard stuff we've been copping from him as a club.
Give me a break, Benji. You have diminished yourself to being just another burnt out, greedy, sooky player who did not know when your time had come. Give thanks that you are not a boxer! This is how you will be remembered.
See ya!!!

His wife writes an article in the Tele around the NRL …there is something not write with all of this , there is his story ..the clubs story then there is the REAL story. There has defiantly been a trigger for this decision and I tend to agree on one thing it's not about money.

A bit of poetic license from the writer to bump the hits count up.

Assumptions. The forum discussion about this is built on them.

I just can't believe how so many on here believe they know what goes on someone else's mind and life - not one of us will probably ever know the complete story surrounding this. Even if one party tells all it will still only be one side of it.

Benji Marshall is only human, and one that has lived his entire adult life totally differently to how you or I have. How can we hope to apply our own standards, philosophies or attitudes to his life and the decisions he should make, and think we know the reasons for them?

I understand this is a forum and I enjoy reading all the different points of view but too many are not offering opinion but actually passing harsh judgements on something we know relatively little about.

Really doesn't explain anything. So he had to accept the offer by a deadline, what was the offer, to honour the final 2 yrs of his contract? He said himself it wasn't about money, so what was the problem?

That's human behaviour, its why we have forums - to put forward an opinion, based on fact or not.

Don't forget a majority of Australians thought Lindy chamberlain killed her baby at the time.

Well what other conclusion can you come to? he had a contract for 2 yrs, why was it such a sudden necessity that he have it extended right now 2 yrs out considering the form he's been in? He said himself it wasn't about money so he can't now turn around and say it was cos the club wasn't going to upgrade his deal.

I think Marshall is busted ,the smother is on to cover the real problem to get the hell out of the NRL as the body is shot! Hodgo did not re-sign for this exact reason and is still playing. Union is a joke re defence so a longer career beckons, I havn't seen Marshall put his shoulder into a tackle for a very long time. Well this is my assumption anyway but probable wrong!

Exactly. Its a forum.

Within said forum you will see people passing judgement harshly - that's the beauty of a forum - you can express yourself how you feel fit.

I'm personally taking a wait and see approach - lets see how he plays the next few weeks, and see if he can change my mind away from where it currently stands which is "oh well, good luck to him"

I think Gordon Tallis got to the point last night by questioning what 'decision' Benji was forced to make when he had a 2 year deal in place.

Either Wests Tigers said 'take your 2 year deal or get out', which hasn't been reported anywhere to have happened, or Benji & co put the hard word on the Tigers- which is the opposite of what Benji is claiming.

Benji's story isn't very consistant. But to be honest, I don't care. Play well this season, part ways, don't look back.

Yep I agree there are ego issues at play here.. Benji was tabled a 2.1 m contact till end of 2015\. Had he accepted and played to his salary the tigers no doubt at end of 2014- start of 2015 would have entered negotiations to keep him a WT for life… Can't understand why benji would not be happy with that?..if he wanted to stay a tiger for life.. It's clear he has his own agenda...and it's not to be a tiger for life...

I think the club has treated him poorly and this is his way of dealing with it.

Really? Even though he wanted 4 years, they offered him 3 at much better money than he was currently on. Mayer advised on the Game Plan last night that the money he was offered was more than that agreed originally by Humphries.

He is in average form and was offered plenty. I think there are people trying to paint the club in a poor light. I believe there would be people in the club that would be happy he is leaving as it frees up a large chunk of cash to build with.

Some of me wants to think the club has done poorly by him, but if that was the case then wouldn't they be better servved no to grant him his release? I don't want him to be bitter toward the club, and I personally think he should find a Super League club as I don't think he will enjoy rugby and there would be plenty of guys waiting to get him on the bottom of a maul.
