NRL Draw - my whinge...

It ticks me off that game days and times are only scheduled five weeks in advance. The draw was done months ago but, unlike the AFL system, we don't know prior to the beginning of the season the actual scheduling of each game.

Firstly, I understand why this is done: Channel 9 want the best games on tele for a Friday and Sunday, hence the current system. They would argue that the fact NRL out rates AFL justifies why this is done.

BUT, now to my whinge…

Example 1 - I want to fly my boys to the Gold Coast to see the Tigers play the Titans in round 6\. We will see the game, visit a mate in Brisbane and do a theme park or two. For us, it's a major holiday and the first time my kids will travel on a plane.

The trouble is, I don't know whether the Tigers will be playing on the Friday night, 5:30 Saturday, 7:30 Saturday, Sunday arvo or Monday night. I want to book my flights, accommodation, tickets and organise our theme park days but I simply can't do it yet. If I could, I would have done this way back in November (or whenever the draw is done) when plane tickets and possibly accommodation would be cheaper because I was booking so early. Instead I'm sitting around waiting for the bloody schedule to be announced and it ticks me off big time.

Example 2 - I have my boys with me on a couple of week days and alternate Friday and Saturday nights. We are all mad Tigers fans and love going to the games. Because the games are not scheduled when the actual draw is done, working out when we can and can't go to our home games is a nightmare. If I knew the schedule in advance, I could plan games around my custody dates for the whole season.

I understand that these issues may only apply to me, but it just makes me wonder whether any other fan feels the same.

Thank you for listening to my whinge. I feel much better for getting it off my chest :frowning:

No Problem Team Tiger….. Living in Maroochydore, I'm hearing you loud and clear!!!

David Gallop has mentioned a few times he will be discouraging this practice for new TV Rights, and prefers to release the full draw at the start of the year. Fingers Crossed!!!

It would be better for the game all round IMO.

If clubs know when games are being played later in the season it would be so much easier for them to communicate and work on promotions.

Yep TT, it's a real pain in the bum.

I hate watching air fares and accomodation go up while waiting for the draw to be annouced.

The NFL have a set draw and from all accounts it works great for them over there. We should really be doing the same!

First world problems !!! LOL
Not much you can do, try getting cheap last minute plane tickets & accommodation isn't too hard to sort out, as for the parks… you can pay at the door, so no need for bookings.

not just channel 9, fans like myself. if they release the full draw prior to the season, ppl without fox will be stuck with too many boring games instead of watching the blockbusters. eg imagine in the last round, there is a game with 2 teams out of finals contention thats on free to air, instead of a game between 2 teams fighting to make the 8\. its easier to predict which games would be best for free to air 5 weeks in advance rather than at the start of the season IMO

It's not just out of town fans who suffer. A mate and I like to get to some away games - went to Canberra and Gold Coast last season, hoping for Townsville and Auckland this time round - but it's impossible to plan a trip when you don't know when the game will be played. To be fair there is next to f-all chance of the Warriors game being on Friday night but with a three hour flight and two hour time difference to factor in it would be nice to have some chance to plan time off work quite apart from anything else.

I agree TT, its damned inconvenient for those living outside of Sydney

For those IN sydney as well with young families.

Things will get sorted but I think we may have to wait a few years first to see it materialise.

Side thought - If the Draw is done in full pre season - It better be equitable in terms of Monday Night games etc

Totally agree TT. I have a young daughter so getting out to Friday and Monday games is out of the question. Can only really make the Sat and Sun games.

Main reason why I haven't renewed my membership this year. Last season they had a membership with 6 General admin tickets that could be used at any home game, so I could use them when I wanted to. This year they removed that option so without prior knowledge of how many games I can get to, I see no reason to buy a SFS/SCG membership when they will probably all be on Fri / Mon nights. We played 6 of our home games on Fri / Mon nights last year.

Are you me?
Basically what you mentioned here is the exact same reasons i refuse to buy a membership for my wife, son and myself.
Due to work commitments i simply cannot make it to friday or monday games. 5:30 saturday games are also a no go as i run a baseball club and i generally dont leave the ground until that time which means the only games i can make are the 7:30 sat games and the sunday games and even then some of those are out.

So without knowing in advance which games i can possibly make it to there is no reason for me to purchase my membership. If they still had the 6 game general admission option i would be a member, but not with the stupid single ground options they have at the moment.

I'm in the same boat… I have to work just over 50% of my weekends interstate. Having to nominate which grounds I'll be able to go to is a HUGE pain.

Just to confirm though, all the venues have been confirmed for that weekend right? As per:
http://www.weststigers.com.au/default.aspx?s=draw-results" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So if by some miracle, my work schedule doesn't clash with every game at a particular ground (or 2 grounds if there is a god!!) then I should be safe to go for the 1 venue/2 venue membership?

Are the venues listed at that link set in stone, or are they tentative past round 5?

I agree and understand also that not everything is the clubs fault - I was a member in 2009 as well as my oldest boy who is 7 now.

We only got to 2 games…

Here's hoping it gets a little easier in 2012.

2 adults and 4 children please....

The membership issue hits me as well. I wanted to buy the boys' membership packages for Christmas, but because of the uncertainty in the schedule, I couldn't risk not being able to attend.

I guess it comes down to TV rights Vs fans… you know who's gonna win that battle every time :frowning:

On a side light, all clubs want their games on free to air. If the draw was done in advance with clubs knowing a set number of their games were gonna be on free to air tele, sponsorship would be easier to sell.

Also on this, I'd actually like to see a variety of teams on a Friday night and Sunday arvo. If I dead set see the Broncos on Friday night footy for 20 weeks in a row I'll puke. Ditto The Rorters and the Drag Queens.
