I'm in the newly formed seat of Newtown. The Libs aren't even trying. They have offered a 23 year old 'event manager' as their candidate and told her not to turn up to public forums or respond to media requests for comment. I've read that they have pretty much done the same thing in Balmain.
This is disappointing because the two elctorates that will be majorly affected by the Westconnex are Newtown and Balmain. People in Newtown in particular have had a lot of questions about traffic flow and property resumptions that simply have not been answered as yet. The Westconnex website is pathetic. It looks like it was thrown together at the last minute and goes into no detail at all apart from "More roads = smile faces" type rubbish. The City of Sydney commissioned a report on it that absolutely slams it as a waste of time and money. Would be nice if the party that is pushing it would have the balls to at least offer one of their own to the area to answer a few questions.
I know, I'm a prospective buyer in the area and the WestConnex plans are extraordinarily vague. It has been a real topic of interest for me, but the information available is very very poor. The best info you can get is out of the local action groups who turn up to government meetings and heckle the govt / developer reps for tidbits of information, or at least confirmation that they don't really know.
I can't believe something so high-profile and hugely funded is so poorly explained to residents. Or maybe I can believe it, it smacks of the old Metro plan.
How are you supposed to make an informed vote with such poor information. Yes that area is already pro Labor or Greens, but Labor confirming that they will not build the St Peters interchange, Libs have 0% chance of taking those seats. And they don't seem to care.
My gut tells me it will be 90% based on the popularity, or not, of the electrical system sale, with some local area issues like education and hospital funding. Libs have done enough; NSW Labor still has a bit of an old smell about it and Foley is a totally vanilla candidate. Nobody seems that interested in protest voting against Abbott, who is a twit of the highest order.
Personally I am disappointed there aren't more moves afoot for public transport. I know there are a few plans in the north, extra bridge crossing, light rail along Anzac Pde, but my stomach turns at the plans to build more and more roads. You build 'em, people will fill 'em.
