NYC Live Game Thread vs Bulldogs 1st Final.

Great second half. Seemed like they really stuck to the game plan of quick play the balls and attacking the ruck and it payed dividends.

Wests Tigers beat Bulldogs 24-20 in NYC qualifying final

Wests Tigers recorded a 24-20 win over minor premiers Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs at ANZ Stadium tonight in the first NYC qualifying final.

The victory gives Wests Tigers Coach Todd Payten and his team a week off before the preliminary final. Wests Tigers finished the regular season in fourth place. The two teams met twice during the season with the Bulldogs winning both times.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the 12th minute when second-rower David Minute brushed through a tackle to race 40 metres to offload for full-back Patrick Templeman to score under the posts for a 4-0 lead. Templeman converted his own try for a 6-0 lead.

Video referee Paul Mellor was called on in the 21st minute to rule whether Wests Tigers full-back Kurtis Rowe had stripped the ball off Minute after he brushed off three defenders before scoring. It was ruled no try.

The Bulldogs were not to be denied two minutes later when centre Mattew Fukofuka crossed out wide for a 10-0 lead. Templeman failed to convert the try.

Wests Tigers centre Asipeli Fine bombed a try when he defused a crossfield kick from five-eighth Matt Mulcahy only to drop the ball before crossing the tryline in the 30th minute.

A touch of good fortune came Wests Tigers way inside the final 20 seconds when Templeman ran acrossfield on the last tackle before dropping the ball 20 metres out from the tryline. The ball was picked up by Wests Tigers winger Marika Koroibete who produced his electrifying pace to race 70 metres to score next to the posts after the siren. Half-back Jacob Miller converted the try to leave Wests Tigers trailing 10-6 at half-time.

2nd Half
Fokofuka grabbed his second try when he dived over in the 42nd minute after the ball travelled several sets of hands for a 14-6 lead. It came after the Bulldogs swooped on a loose pass on their quarter line. The try was not converted.

Wests Tigers got back to 14-10 in the 51st minute when five-eighth Matt Mulcahy spotted a gap to put the foot down to race into open space to score next to the posts. Miller converted the try to leave Wests Tigers trailing 14-12 after 52 minutes.

Two minutes later, Wests Tigers hooker Ben Saunders was ruled to be short of the line on a Refs Call from the video referee.

On the next play, Fine leapt high to take a Miller crossfield kick to plant the ball down. Mellor ruled Fine lost control of the ball before planting it down.

Wests Tigers were rewarded for their patience when Mulcahy sold a dummy on an acrossfield run to score in the corner in the 57th minute to give his side the lead for the first time. Miller converted the try from out wide to give Wests Tigers an 18-14 lead after 59 minutes.

Asipeli was not to be denied when he dived over a minute later from a Miller cut out pass on the last tackle. It came after prop Mosese Fotuaika busted the defensive line to link up with full-back Kurtis Rowe who was tackled 15 metres out from the tryline. Miller converted the try from the sideline to give Wests Tigers a 24-14 lead after 62 minutes.

The Bulldogs hit back in the 66th minute when second-rower Tupou Sopoaga planted the ball down in a three man tackle. Templeton converted the try to leave the Bulldogs trailing 24-20\. The try came after the referee ruled that Wests Tigers played their advantage on the set before after Fine picked the ball up and ran five metres to offload a pass that was spilt by a team-mate to give the Bulldogs another set.

Mellor was called on again in the 71st minute to rule on a try to Koroibete off a crossfield kick by Miller. It was ruled no try on the grounds that Koroibete touched the ball in leaping for it.

Wests Tigers NRL coaches and playing staff take note

Braith Anasta already said he cant wait to play with Marika Koroibete what a team his a tiger now i guess hope for a big year from the first grade next year.

What a second half, I thought after the Cubs conceded the early try in the 2nd half the Pups would come right back into it but no the Tiges responded incredibly well, this has been one of the few times I've seen the NYC team play live and have always had to settle for live scores but just like the Senior players they keep us on the edge of our seats.
Congratulations young men, please show us that you are well and truly capable of winning the Premiership.

Ahhhh i love hearing the boys do well. Only seen them play once this year but they were entertaining ( and victorious). Happy for Payto too. Well done.

Good result.

It seemed the more they played what was in front of them the better they went.

I feel Brown must be close to starting and Santi should always have been in the starting side for mine.

At the beginning nobody seemed to want to run hard and the playmakers were looking at the next play rather then what was happening.

Lots to work on but an extra week in which to do it

onya tigers, great game and fully deserved winners. first time i have seen mulcahey play and he is pretty quick and elusive. the wingers were again impressive, as were santi, passi and fotofinish.

Great win boys! Defended very well for the most part. Refs were shocking as usual, nothing new there.

I think the Dogs hooker turned up at the wrong ground- he should of been playing in the Golden Oldies game, he looked 60!

Hopefully it is the start of a horrible night for the scum club they call Canterbury 😛ray:

They may have Matt Groat available for selection in a couple of weeks which won't hurt, although I think he'd struggle to displace the props at the moment.

before the game willow the commentators mentioned that groat was ineligble because he has played 7 x f/g and only 4 x u/20's

This team puzzles me, I watch them regularly and to be honest just don't rate them that much. In 2009 it was obvious that the team oozed class and had a lot of players destined for first grade, I just don't see it in this team.

No idea how they won tonight, but it was gutsy and they hung in there. All the bench forwards were very good. Was hugely disappointed with fotuaika in his first stint but his second stint was fantastic.

Mulcahy, where has he been hiding!? Looks like a real footballer and a bit of an old school 5/8, showed the ball very well and backed himself. Miller had a mixed bag but I do think he is a future first grader, people dismiss young players too early these days.

Rowe was quiet good and much safer then Rudolph has been, doesn't have the same spark in attack but you can tell he has played fullback all his life as opposed to Rudolph (take note mr sheens).

Korobeite was an animal as usual, thought you saw the difference between he and nofoaluma in attitude in that game, nofoaluma has all the talent to be better then marika, but marika plays as though his life depends on it.

All in all the team while be stoked, week off and probably play the raiders or warriors (who we've beaten both this year) for a spot in the GF.

That was a very good performance from the Tigers.

I saw them play the Bulldogs a couple of weeks ago and the first half was a replica of that game with the Bulldogs dominating physically. this time however Korobiete was playing, and his length of the field try on the stroke of half time was what kept us in the game.

The second half was more suited to the Tigers style of play, but at the end of the day it was two great individual tries more or less from nowhere from Mulcahy that swayed it to the good guys.

The Tigers backline is full of scoring potential. Not knocking him but I think Miller continues to show that he is more comfortable at this level than in first grade.

I was just thinking about this the other day….who out of the '09 side went on to play NRL? Mullaney, the Schirnack brothers, Simona?? Too long ago for my memory to recall

Mullaney, lui, Jason shirnack, woods, fifita, dwyer, politani all played first grade. Also another forward played a game or two for souths off the bench this year, can't remember his name.
