Six Huddersfield Giants players have been arrested on suspicion of the rape of a young woman, British police and the rugby league team said overnight.
Club managing director Richard Thewlis confirmed police were questioning some of their players who were staying at the Gosforth Marriott Hotel in Newcastle, northeast England, for a team-building exercise and training.
"I can confirm that six of our playing squad are currently helping police with their inquiries in the Newcastle area regarding an allegation made in the early hours of Tuesday morning by an unnamed female," he said.
Police confirmed that a 22-year-old woman had made an allegation of rape following an incident in Gosforth, Newcastle, early on January 19.
"Six men have been arrested and are currently helping with inquiries. The investigation is in the very early stages and inquiries are ongoing," a spokesman said.
