Outside backs

I was at the game and my take was that we matched/bettered Manly up front but what strikes me is the quality of our outside backs is just dreadful.
1) JTJ is busted. Not only all the errors you see on the TV but he looks unfit. physically he looks good but there was one set when we were working it out of our half and he didn’t get back onside from the original kick until about tackle 5. He needs to spend time in reserve grade
2) MCK is not a first grade player. It’s no surprise that Turbo ripped us apart on our left.
3) what is talau? He runs the ball back hard and has good hands but he’s not fast and doesn’t look like a back. I don’t get where he plays in a year or twos time.
4) Laurie is very safe but he is so small. The difference between a Laurie and a turbo is that the big fullbacks can push through that half break into the open field. I don’t think I have seen Laurie make a genuine break all year. His only chance is if AD/brooks can set him up through the middle but we have only ever tried that once or twice and it’s never worked. Yes he needs time to work on combinations but he also needs to put on some size for attack and defence.

Laurie is a natural talent but we desperately need some big investment in our outside backs. Noffa is here whether we like it or not. It’s hard to see why we would keep the others

Hard to see why we would keep Laurie?

We did not come close to matching them in the forwards, possession was 50:50.

JT 87
SU 78
AT 118
ZM 85
AS 41
Total 409

Manly
TP 101
MT 184
JT 89
JA 126
TS 110
Total 610

Laurie has potential but looks pretty ordinary compared to the best fullbacks in the game.

Nothing to lose at this stage.

Adam D at 6 is working for me but he just needs a decent 7.
I think we give Madden a go as you never know until you try. Cini is a must for me as he consistently over 200m a game and works his backside off. Amore is also a must as he is a meter eater.

I've frequently been told on the forum that our half-back steers the team around on the park and is most important to our attack, while the five eighth mostly brings our outside backs into the game. So on that assumption, how exactly does Doueihi escape criticism?
As poor as our outside backs have looked they don't seem to be getting adequate ball and as much as I like him as a player, he's not sharp enough to distribute the ball evenly.

I understand the flaws in Luke's game and that he doesn't exactly assert himself as a team leader but there's a number of issues in this team overall with all our spine members showing some deficiencies in one or two vital areas of their games.

There should be little or no room for error for the whole team.

That was pretty much what I was trying to get across about Doueihi in the off season, he is not a good distributor of the ball. He likes to go to the line and uses his awkward footwork to break tackles.

I don’t even think Douhie passes the ball to Jimmy... it’s like he’s scared for some reason..

Douhie should be bringing the defenders in and passing through to JTJ for a quick run..

Imo, even family and friends think that JTJ doesn’t get enough ball... BUTTT he should be going out and finding it..

100% I would. Nofo played fullback in Under 20's and has shown the attributes of a good fullback. He is almost paid fullback money anyway.

Playing Laurie at 6 would mean that he handles the ball a lot more and would certainly provide speed and penetration which has been lacking in the halves.

He does go looking for the ball, he was showing up on the opposite side of the field yesterday and gets in and tries to work out of dummy half.

Can't see Laurie at 6 ..he would get isolated defensively and eaten alive by big mobile back rowers on the edge

He is also too unstructured at this point of his career.

I do see this, but still - doesn’t get enough ball really.

That is due to game plan and the players inside him.

So really, the game plan comes from the coach, so it’s the coaches problem you’re saying?

Or are the players not following the game plan.. hahah
