Outside Backs

The afternoon games will always bring out the best quality backs. That game just shows how far our backs are. The difference when they run onto the ball against ours was so significant.

All our backs are NRL Standard. Nofo, Chee Kam, Ken, Talau....but I feel you can only have 1-2 of them. Kennedy, Ronaldo, Katoa gave our back 3 a bath in how to run hard (Unfortunately, our guys just aren't fast enough to run that hard).

Our guys would look outstanding against our defence. Those tries where their wingers just ran through our middle were terrible.

Metcalf and Kennedy are two really good young players. I wish we had them.

Yes, our outside backs are our biggest problem, along with our leadership, half our spine, front row depth and half of our back row.

On a serious note the gulf between the two teams was massive in the 3 quarter line.

We have mediocrity from 1-17. The outside backs are no exception, they wouldn't scare any oppositions except Brissy or Dogs.

I am over questioning our outer backs.
Oh we need another Center to be signed, that will solve our problems (repeat 50x times in this forum).
We signed BJ Leulia because he was a big body and someone thought he could defend.
We have well over 1m in our centers, if not 1.5 with Leulia and Roberts.

Centers are not our defense! Centers are not our defense. Defense is a TEAM sport.

Before the Sharks game, everyone was talking about how our forward pack was better (with them missing Tollman and Fifita, I believed it) while the Cronulla backs are better.
Turns out our forward pack got owned in the middle!
We had a better pack, if only marginally and I know Tamou was out. Still we should have won the middle and we lost.

We have a Major problem with our Defense. Sure swapping out say James Roberts for Curtis Scott would mean fewer tries conceded that side, but also means far fewer tries scored by us as well. What Wayne, What Bellamy and what a good coach does is get James Roberts defending like Curtis Scott!!!

I think Easts are going to struggle without Craig Fitzgibbon as their assistant coach. Any time, any one ever wants to Wressle... Craig tackles them! We don't have that hardness, that Grit. We had better forwards and lost in the middle and we lost because of Grit. We lost because we did not have defensive co-ordination.

Bring in Mal Maninga and Greg Ingles at their primes and put them in our center spot's. Were still loosing games, why? Because we don't have a defensive plan and the opposition halfback realises that the middle is weak and directs the attack that way.

Our club needs a 360 Audit. We need a solid defensive plan and a solid coach to implement it.

If our outside backs were able to slice through the middle of opposition packs like the sharks did on the weekend we would be ok.

The real problem with that is our middle is still soft.

We have the worst outside backs in the comp but sadly our NSW cup backline was also pathetic. The talent was in Flegg but sadly their development has been stalled which has severely screwed up our plans. Juniors are now 18 months behind where they should be. So frustrating.
