P&O Cruises

Good luck with the seas I went on a similar cruise to Noumea, Isle of Pines etc a couple of years ago as my wife kept insisting, had a good room with a balcony but didn't know the front of the ship was not a good choice. Seas were bad due to storms, at one point the stage show one night was cancelled as there were concerns for the performers being thrown off the stage. Needless to say sea sickness was bad so glad when got to the calm seas of the islands. If you strike the same see the doctor on board others had the ,needle, for motion sickness which is what I should have done instead of trying to 'ride' it out. Organised a bus tour of Noumea before we left, a mistake as we waited at port for our bus whereas others who didn't organise beforehand got off and straight onto other buses waiting for whoever wanted to jump on. Misses wants to go on another cruise but I am resisting, think she enjoyed seeing me suffering! If weather is good can be a god holiday though, plenty of food, drink, entertainment etc.

Maybe it depends on the time of yr. My mum and step dad went on one about 6 yrs ago and my mum picked up an ear ache that to this day still gives her ears trouble. She was in bed for 2 weeks when she got home. It may have been a pre exisiting issue that was triggered by the boat though.

We're going smack bang in the middle of monsoon season so i'm sure the water will be nice and choppy.

I hope the seas, if rough don't affect you but if so I am told the trip to the doctor on board is well worth it. Having said that, a mate of mine worked in the merchant navy and never had a problem with sea sickness so it gets down to individuals as you have mentioned.

Very good friend died on a P And O cruise

Early 90's on a diving expedition , they went with two boats and each boat thought she was on the other boat and they left her out there

Absolutely devastating , I had just moved to the town she was teaching at to try and sort my stuff out

That's terrible. There was a similar story about 10 yrs or so ago about an American couple who were left stranded on an expedition somewhere in QLD

Hey Gunners, LOOOONG time traveler/adventurer. Been to over 100 countries over the last 15 years. Lived in the Middle East for 24 months and China for 4 years. General advice for traveling mate, live in the moment, drop your western ideas that's been drummed into you since birth, just soak it all up for where you are for that particular moment in time, immerse yourself in the local culture and roll with whatever comes your way.

Where in the middle east?

I'm going Tehran and then following the silk Road through to central Asia and Kashgar and the Taklamakan desert into China in a few weeks.

12-14 months in Egypt, 6 months Syria and 6 months in Turkey. Spent about 3 years in the middle East all totaled adding backpacking to the above list. Circa 2003-2006\. Never went to Iran though. Syria was my pick of them all, such a shame whats going on their now, the loveliest people out of all the middle east that i encountered.

Those mongrels are destroying some beautiful architecture over there too. Blew up another temple yesterday :frowning:

But I digress…

Hi GNR,
You'll have a ball.

Don't worry about motion sickness. The main thing is don't focus on the possibility of getting sick, forget about it if all possible.
I've a bit of experience in this area. The number one thing I remember is look outward not inward. Don't concentrate on small things nearby like reading a book for example. If things get rough don't go sit in your room. Go outside in the fresh air (if safe) and look at the horizon. I always try to look at the horizon.

You're on the right track about the local language. It always helps break the ice if you ask how to say various things, hello goodbye, please, and thank you in the local lingo.

Wear your Tigers jumper or hat, especially if you're going to Fiji. I got off the boat in Fiji with my WT hat on and immediately had a rapport with the locals. They're rugby (mainly union) crazy, but it helped and I got looked after.

I'm jealous about the food.
Have fun.

Gnr you're right, it's all about the cruise itself. I went on a 3 week criuse to Tahiti (only 40 years ago).

Wine & cheese tasting, dancing, learnt backgammon, ship darts champion, ship mixed doubles table tennis champion, top ship food and good bars.

We had some terrible weather for a week half the guests got sea sick but luckily I was ok. My 3 mates were crook so I was lone wolf for a week lol.

Hired a car on Tahiti and nearly had a head on first 5 minutes because we were on the wrong side of the road. I've always gone native when overseas when eating, when in Rome as they say.

The ship's name was Leonid Sobinov.

Have a ball mate, no regrets

seems exciting mate! Ill be on a cruise at that time too haha, we go annually, what ship have you booked?

The new one, the Eden. Doesn't arrive in Oz till November.

Only P&O one i went on was the Pearl, best time of my life, you will love it. Only problem is december is too far away!

Yes and no. We started planning it last xmas, and it felt like a lifetime away. We're in September tomorrow, so its slowly creeping up.

It will creep up on you real fast. Before you know it you'll be sailing the seven seas GNR
Cruising can be fun if you have your sea legs. If not, there's medications to help you get through it. Food is top class and pretty much all you can eat. Alcohol can be expensive on board. The only thing I don't like is the time restrictions on the islands. A few hours on a beutiful island is just not enough time to explore and mingle with the locals.
In saying that, it's a great experience and you and your lady will have a ball

I've been on boats before, but never been out to sea on a ship, so haven't been able to a gauge as to how i'll go. Can't wait for the food, i've been dieting the last 3 months just to be able to go on there and eat whatever i want guilt free haha.

Awsome trip. I'm jealous  I recall travelling through Kashgar with my family when i was little. I have vivid memories of this beautiful and unique place. I remember my mum and i happily spending hours strolling through the bazaar, to my dad's and my brothers dismay. Enjoy your adventure Jonathan!

Thank you! Really looking forward to this trip more than any others. So much learning and history. Great you went to Kashi before because apparently there are a lot of changes there now and it is quickly developing which will be a shame…

Don't diet, tbh i lose weight on the cruise, last cruise i lost 2kgs lol, but im a very active kid, was swimming alot.

I have to disagree with you Tigermama, I thought the islands were very boring, all except vanuatu which i believe has how been desroyed by natural disasters. Plenty of time on the islands haha
