Parenthood drives Thompson home to NZ

New Zealand Warriors recruit Bodene Thompson has revealed his move from the Wests Tigers to Auckland was driven by a desire to be closer to his young son.

Thompson's son moved from the Gold Coast to Christchurch six months ago with his mother – a huge distance away considering the commitment involved with playing football for a living.

A shoo-in for a spot in the Tigers' undermanned back row in 2015, Thompson's move to the Warriors means he is now jostling for a spot in the club's 17 up against internationals Ben Matulino, Simon Mannering, Suaia Matagi, Ben Henry, Sam Rapira and fellow recruit Ryan Hoffman.

"[The move to Auckland] was just a matter of being closer to [my son], and my immediate family is in town as well, so it was a move inspired to be closer to them really," Thompson told NRL.com.

"Things didn't work out for me at the Tigers. I wanted to stay but it all didn't pan out the way I wanted it to and I'm stoked now to be at the Warriors. I can't wait to head over there.

"Living in Auckland now means I'm only an hour flight to him which is exciting."

While family priorities drove the move, Thompson is also relishing both the challenge of fighting to earn a regular first grade spot, and the chance to learn from a pack filled with internationals.

"Everyone loves competition, well I certainly do, and I just can't wait to get into it because everyone's on that same page," Thompson said.

"We all have to train as hard as we can and do everything we can to hopefully be picked week in, week out. It's a challenge I'll always look forward to and I pride myself on that.

"They have plenty of talented back-rowers at the club now. It's good to challenge yourself and always compete but also help one another too, because it's a team sport at the end of the day so I can't wait to get over there and rip in.

"It's a long season… so it's just a matter of taking it one day at a time too. There's no point looking too far ahead, you just have to train as hard as you can."

Having previously been forced to bide his time at the Gold Coast Titans and then the Tigers, Thompson now has the opportunity to extend his career at the team he supported as a kid.

"Growing up the Warriors was and still is the only team in New Zealand playing rugby league so obviously everyone liked them," Thompson said.

"It hasn't sunk in yet. I had plenty of my idols in the team back then so it's a dream come true for me to play for my childhood team."

You look at how clubs are bolstering up big time with back rowers

Storm ,Cowboys ,Warriors ,Broncos ,Souths ,Roosters

Obviously clubs can see the change in the game

Well it was already happening in certain quarters at the end of the season

Teams stacking there benches with back rowers , maybe three back rowers and one real prop on the bench

SOO we have seen it for the last two seasons

Maybe its just coincidence , maybe not

Bit of a nonsense article - " Things didn't work out at the Tigers" - Huh? Ok his son moved to NZ but that was hardly the WT fault. He became a regular 1st grader and gained international honours with NZ while at the Tigers. I'm sick of all these negative articles about the club,

Most backrowers have to classy ballplayers inside them to run off - few ( there are exceptions ) are good enough to break the line from a standing start. However the game does appear to be heading down the track of big explosive backrowers who can run good lines and have ball skills - pity we don't have any.

You've started your X-Mass drinks early again haven't you X….

I think we have seen it in Origin more due to lack of front row options for both teams.

Maybe more backrowers on the bench is the result of teams having a prop at lock? I'm not sure. The game is due for one of its changes of style I think.

Would love to see the interchange come down to 6.

Who said it was? You're really making a mountain out of a molehill. He wanted to be with his son, you can't begrudge him that.

I'm not saying that - what I meant was I understand the reason he left was to be closer to his son - that's it cut and dried end of article. The part that things didn't work out at the tigers is what I'm questioning - why put it in there. I would have thought he had a very successful stint with the tigers but it was time to move on. Maybe I'm reading too much in to the wording but it just seemed to me to be a negative thing to say.

But that could have meant anything. " Things didn't work out at the Tigers" could have meant, i could no longer stay in Sydney so there was no way i could stay with the club. Its hardly comparable to what Marshall and Anasta have said recently.

"Things didn't work out for me at the Tigers. **I wanted to stay** but it all didn't pan out the way I wanted it to…"

The "I wanted to stay" that followed that sentence changes the context completely. There is nothing negative towards the Tigers in that, his move was completely due to personal circumstances.

I don't think it was entirely personal reason for his move to N.Z, by him saying "I wanted to stay but it all didn't pan out the way I wanted it to".
I reckon they couldn't comprise on his next Contract, especially him making the kiwis squad would of bumped up his asking price.
That's what I reckon happened.
