Paris Olympics: 26 July 2024 – Sun, 11 Aug 2024

Lyles. The fastest athlete on the planet is correct as an American says and bemoans American Sports - when America says in any sport (World Champions) yet they only win in America. I.e. NFL, NBA. Thank you Noah for the truth.

Yeah great thread i love it!

But i don't get how guys like Jason day... Novak & raffa can compete when they're pros
Sadly the Olympics lost its status as an amateur spectacle long ago. I used to love watching it because you would get to see all the sports that never received publicity or air time at any other time in the calendar except at the Olympics. When Tennis, golf, rugby, surfing and other professional sports were introduced I thought it was wrong. Basketball has become so big now with multi million dollar NBA players competing as well.

It's all about the money now with big sponsorships and many professionals competing across all areas, so hardly amateur anymore though there are still a good deal of sports who struggle to get funding and don’t have the profile of the professional ones. It’s great they get to showcase their sport and their talents on the world stage, even if only for a short time every four years.

I don't mind basketball since for the national teams it's probably the biggest event but golf, tennis and provably surfing shouldn't be there. The Olympics is probably an afterthought compared to winning a major/grand slam.

I thought that too until I saw Novak’s reaction to winning the men’s tennis gold medal. He was super emotional and relieved to have finally got it after 5 attempts. Even with all he has achieved in tennis, which is everything, you could see how much winning a gold medal meant to him.

I think it was the icing on the cake and he's won a billion slams. Ask someone like Philipousis if he'd rather a grand slam or an Olympic gold and he'd almost certainly say the former.

I understand the argument about golf ,tennis not being Olympic sports
But at least Soccer has a method to dumb down their professional teams a bit with age restriction .
USA however are most blatant with their dream team basketball removing any possibility of them losing
I think the amateur / professional line is too blurred these days and impossible to control
Golf this time drew massive crowds ( way above expectation ) so fans voting with their feet have ensured this one stays .
The top golfers looked more nervous playing for nothing compared to other weeks playing for millions . Anyway I enjoyed it and Day finishing 9th same as Xander Shauffle was a good effort .

Geez Giddey was shocking for the Boomers.

Up 24pts and Giddey just kept turning the ball over time and time again making some of the dumbest plays have seen - not even NBL quality and then he kept complaining.

Patty Mills tried to carry us - the legend he is, still has it.

If their is a sport that shouldn’t be based on the amateur rule it’s basketball, the USA team alone earns more a year than some countries competing.

That’s a really bad loss.
