Parish Withdraws From Running As Board Split

MATT Parish has withdrawn from the Wests Tigers coaching race - but the 10-member board is still to agree unanimously on a replacement.

The chase to replace Tim Sheens has become a mess.

Mick Potter remains the hot favourite and should be appointed at a board meeting tomorrow night.

It seems those directors resisting Potter will finally agree to appoint the former Canterbury and St George star ahead of Kevin Walters.

There is still a faction on the board though who want Parish - but they are outnumbered.

It is understood the coaching job must be unanimous among the 10 joint venture directors - five from Western Suburbs, five from Balmain.

Tired of waiting for a decision at Concord, Parish has told Parramatta he will be an assistant coach alongside Ricky Stuart for the next three years. The decision will ensure Parish can also be used on Laurie Daley's NSW State of Origin coaching staff.

Parish was initially all but promised the Wests Tigers coaching job but somehow lost support at board level.

The Tigers have been procrastinating for weeks now on a new coach - frustrating all candidates.

Parish had strong support from rugby league giants Daley, Stuart, Steve Roach and Ben Elias.

That support though was discarded by some Tigers board members.

If the ten member board is split, chairman Dave Trodden - aligned to Balmain - would have the casting vote. There appears to be acrimony at board level between the two factions, Wests and Balmain.

Potter, who coached Bradford this year in Super League, was not answering his mobile phone yesterday.

He will be Tigers coach but there are still elements on the board not overcome with Potter.

The successful candidate will face a tough and demanding battle.

He will be coming in late as a rookie coach to a club with little cash and board issues.

"Good luck to him - he will need it,'' said one high-profile rival coach. "It will be a tough gig, especially for a young coach.

"I reckon they need an experienced bloke in charge.''

Senior Wests Tigers players have had input into the new coach. The players remain stunned their club allowed centre Beau Ryan to walk out and join Cronulla after being offered a three year deal.

stupid story

Parish withdraws because he knows he's not getting the job

then Potter is called a "rookie coach" which he isn't .

Good to see the DT still has issues with the Wests Tigers… Sadly, it looks like the new coach will be scrutinised with every move?!

I wonder what odds Centrebet are offering for him to not last a full year?

The whole Parish thing is a joke. The club received poor reports regarding Parish including one from Ray Cashmere who was at Salford at the same time. Daley,Roach and Alan Jones were the only ones pushing him. He didn't walk away.. HE WAS NOT WANTED.

More or less. The DT really can't help themselves when it comes twisting a story to suit their own agenda.

You can always count on the DT to over dramatise and embellish untruths. Watch for Phil Rothfield's column on Sunday.

I am very happy he will not be our coach. I have not heard one good thing about him from any player that has been involved with any side he has coached or been an assitant at. If Alan Jones wanted him in the job I would put the red pen straight through his name. Jones is a cancer and was the worst coach I have ever seenn in my 30 plus years watching the game.

Another wonderful piece of journalism from the telecrap. After we have announced who is coaching us the rag of a paper will beat its chest and say that they "predicted it".News limited the gutter of journalism

source?
im led to believe there were quite a number on the board pushing for him, but he could see how bad the problems were at the club and walked away.

The difference between thr Daily Telegraph and SMH's reporting of this whole saga is poles apart. DT are so transparent in their dislike of the tigers and their agenda against the club.
Parish may have walked away because he was told he was not wanted.. Way to spin a story DT

Yeah right, and how many board members are we talking about? You have no source but quotes from the DT. I wouldn't even trust that mob with last nights lotto numbers.

A player mgr told me 2 weeks ago that Parish had zero chance of getting the gig. And that officials had heard bad reports on him. The only reason it's stating he walked away is to protect his image if he goes for another head coach role. Alan Jones was spruiking him to the board, I'm glad they didn't listen.

Thats good we dont want him anywere near our club.

No amateur coaches needed. Love or hate Sheens the man had presence.

I believe only Potter has this of those allegedly still in contention for the vacancy.

Withdrawn…. yeah right.

Yep this is nonsense.

It was super league coach of the year versus a fella with a really mixed feedback from all who have worked with him.

Only way parish would've Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon potter is if it turned out he was like Hagan to the Queensland origin team and calling the shots while Meniga/Toovey provided inspiration.

Good luck to him at Parra but think we got the right fella
