Tigers won't rush giant rookie into NRL

Opposition defences can breathe easy with Wests Tigers coach Jason Taylor confirming he won't make the mistake of rushing boom rookie Taniela Paseka into the NRL before he's ready.

While he might not be a household name yet, Paseka is regarded as one of the most promising props coming through the Holden Cup system, and after one look at him it's easy to see why.

The 19-year-old is a 199cm, 124kg lean, mean wrecking machine who showed enough in his first season at the club to be named the Tigers NYC Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year for 2016.

The Junior Blue was eased into the under-20s system and quickly developed into an unstoppable force capable of churning out big minutes in the front row and changing the complexion of a game with a monster shot or a bulldozing carry.

Having re-signed until the end of 2018, the hulking Paseka has been promoted to the Tigers' extended NRL squad this season but Taylor says it would be counter-productive to rush him into the first-grade side too soon.

"We'll take it slowly with Taniela but we see enormous potential in him. He had a great season in the NYC team last year so we're excited about his future," Taylor told NRL.com.

"This is the second time that he's spent time with us in pre-season. Last year he did a day a week so this isn't foreign to him.

"His pre-season has been a little bit limited because he's had a couple of injuries that have held him back a bit. He's just coming back from a shoulder that he hurt in training."

While clearly impressed with Paseka's potential, Taylor said the best approach would be to take a more cautious route with the prop's development.

"Size is only one part about playing in the NRL. There are a lot of players who are going to let him know that they're around," he said.

"We don't want to make the mistake of pushing him into first grade before he's ready. But if he shows us that he's ready then we'll definitely give him a go. The signs in the pre-season have been really good but there's still a bit of work to do."

Tigers prop Tim Grant echoed his coach's sentiments and said the onus was on the senior playing group to help Paseka make the transition from a Holden Cup behemoth into an NRL mainstay.

"You don't really want to say too much to put pressure on him, but he's definitely got all the attributes to make a good first-grader, that's for sure. He's only 19 and he's got a lot to learn so it would be unfair to put pressure on him," Grant told NRL.com.

"Like any big guy in the NRL, he's difficult to tackle. But I think once he develops a bit and learns what he's working with he'll be a massive threat.

"There's no use having good young kids if you don't have senior players who are willing to help them out. That's not just limited to on-field stuff because our role is to also teach them how to handle themselves off the field and how to be a professional.

"Here at the Tigers we have a good mix of senior players and we're doing all we can to lead those younger boys and show them how to be a professional. There are no days off in the NRL, you've got to be on your game all the time, you've got to prepare your body the best you can and there are no shortcuts.

"He's a good young kid, he's willing to learn and he trains really hard. I think he's got a bright future ahead of him if he continues to work hard."

If he doesn't play in the top grade this year, watch all the other clubs chase him and offer him a top grade spot !! We have to offer either a spot or more money or we will lose him !!

3/4 of club is on P plates, would love to think that all this so called potential will one day lead into something, but to tell you the truth I am starting to tire of thinking of what might be in a couple of years.

Don't get me wrong its great to have some real young talent on our books, but up to now its lead to nothing and half the young talent could walk out the door anyway. Oh for another Ellis type signing

Bit like the early 90's Wests side

Heaps of young potential coming through , just need some seasoned hard heads to help the young blokes through the bad days

The best wins are the ugly wins , the ones where mental toughness and a desire not to lose just takes over and gets the two points

Size isn't everything in the NRL, but it's a great start!

I think JT is doing the right thing holding him close to first grade but not rushing him. If he cops some big shots too soon, he could go into a shell. But I'm sure he has played against guys not far off the size of regular first graders that would of hit him hard but the NRL is different.

This is why I'm looking forward to the NYC going.

But if his good enough then he is old enough.

Geez, it's not as if its the 1960's, 70's or 80's where a young prop is coming up against a Ned Kelly, Sattler, O'Neill or Kelly. Back in the day you needed eyes in the back of your head to see the cheap shot coming or the fist (or worse) to the head in a scrum.

These days you just have to be able to take a tackle or three from a group hit. It's still tough but geez it's been cleaned up a lot.

That's how we got Keithie. Playing for the Sharks as a 19 year old prop got a shoulder charge to the head. He was in hospital for a while then rehab, the Sharks didn't come and see if he was OK. So he signed with us.

Really looking forward to seeing how the big unit rolls this year. I think he'll see more State Cup than NYC and if he can perform strongly in State Cup then he should earn his call up to FG next season. I wouldn't rush him this season.

I worked with Kane Cleal for a while (who had his own run in with Gibbs, and a mouth to show for it) and said hands down O'Meley was the toughest bloke ever. He tried to tackle him first week training at the dogs and felt like he was tackling a bag of wet cement.

Ah yeah cool. Heard this sort of tripe before.
We will over pay again for another hyped up youngster.
We have to be the dumbest club ever to fall for junior hype.
All these world beaters we keep producing you would think we would have won multiple premierships by now.

Keebra park bro. What a joke.

We've won the same amount of premierships that the Broncos have won in the last 15 years .

They're not that easy to win .

speaking of hyped up youngsters , keebra park & the broncos … about 12 months ago this happened ...

THE Broncos have snared one of the most promising young centres in the game with cancer-beating sensation Marion Seve leaving the Tigers for Brisbane.
>
Seve will join the Broncos this season, further bolstering the club’s backline stocks following the recruitment of James Roberts.
>
While he is yet to make his NRL debut, Seve is regarded as one of the most devastating young three-quarters in rugby league.
>
A product of league nursery Keebra Park on the Gold Coast, Seve fought testicular cancer which spread to his liver in his teenage years but emerged from the battle to win the Peter Sterling Medal as the country’s best schoolboys player in 2013.

hasn't been sighted in first grade , maybe he will but others have had a taste before him when there's been outs from the broncos backline .

the moral of this story ...

it aint that easy , even the best clubs dont get it right all the time ...

I remember he had a few of the big cashed up clubs chasing him. Do you let one of your most promising juniors walk out the door to join the Storm or Roosters, or do you match the offers? I know if he did go and became a leader with another cashed up club, I'd be one of the first complaining about it! Therefore I am happy the club has retained him. Also, he has come out of the Wests' junior district which is great.

Wow! What a post! Thank you for setting my thinking back on track.
When I first read that the Tigers had won the same number of premierships in the last fifteen years as Brisbane has, my belief in the Tigers got a boost.
My information from within the Tigers is all VERY POSITIVE. Hopefully, the Tigers' future is in good hands.

Congratulations on the dumbest post of the day.

For an unsuccessful club that can't attract top players without paying near double what other clubs offer, growing and holding on to our juniors is our only option.

Hvaing as many promising juniors as possible only increases the chances of finding that next star player.

Bit early to judge if the dumbest.
Revisit it again once he progresses, or not.
The lucky dip of investing in juniors is a proven loser. Many clubs abandoned their programs and get players from feeder clubs. Our juniors will be poached if they are good enough and we will just keep repeating it.
You're right though, we have no choice because we are desperate.
