Patrick Herbert #306

Good game today. More importantly, he is a natural centre. He runs lines and tries to set up his man, which is far more than Maka, Turuva, Skelton or any other option we have.

Without any other real options, he should stay in the team unless Toa forces him out.
I do agree, it is infinitely preferable to have a real centre there. Maka has loads of potential and will likely end up being a star left side centre but, right now, he is not ready to play first grade innthat position. Too many errors. He was beaten by his opposite more than once yesterday and he butchered a try when he should have given it to Skelton rather than going himself.

Toa is not in the picture at all at the moment. Getting back to fitness and ordinary form in Cup.

He massively exceeded expectations. Sure he’s looked good in reserve grade but to put such a job on that they replaced their centre is phenomenal. He had his kids on the field post game, you could see what it meant to him. Overplayed his hand once or twice but wow him and May look a very dangerous centre combination. Amazing he fell into our lap like that.

Benji: “I was watching this team, I had no idea who they were, and I thought, ‘Is that Patrick Herbert?’,” Marshall said. “He was man of the match, so I text him and asked, ‘What are you up to?’. He said, ‘Nothing’, so I said, ‘Why don’t you come on a train and trial?’.

“He trained really well in the pre-season, impressed all the boys with his work rate and ethic, and we rewarded him with a contract.”

Herbert said he “shed a tear of happiness” after full-time when greeted by his three young sons, True, 6, Kauda, 5, and four-year-old Charnze, on the field. Charnze had never seen his father play league.

“I was losing faith [I would play in the NRL again],” Herbert said. “I backed my ability, but I didn’t have that person in my corner until Benji called me.

“The four years I had out of the game, it made me more grateful just to be around it again. If I don’t get picked again, it’s no big deal. Patience is a virtue, which I learned during my time off. I’ll take each day as it comes.”

One of the happiest players in the sheds who had waited 1330 days to play another game of NRL

We should release him for a backup hooker let's bring Liddle back
Been thinking the same thing all weekend - Reckon we're missing a conduit between Api and Haywood.
Liddle has been really good for the Dragons.
Heard the media talking about him not getting much game time and wondering why
(Being one of their best when he is playing)

The Footy we're playing at the moment would be right up his alley
- And he'd add some speed to us in the middle of the park.

I have been saying we need to sign a competent, if not stellar Centre for a couple of seasons now. Someone experienced who knows his trade and can just do a job in the position, someone who has played at least 100 games. AD was getting bashed up a lot at Centre last season and it was driving me insane.

Herbert hasn't played enough footy to be considered a veteran but he sure as hell looked like it yesterday. Completely unlocked Turuva on the wing for us, looked way more balanced.

A brilliant bit of business and coaching from Benji.

I think your being a bit unfair to Starford, hes been good to great for us when hes uninjured his problem has been that hes constantly picking up a niggle or 2 and not being able to play at the same level

People will change their tune. Plenty of people wanted AD gone because he was finished as well.

Defensively compared to To'a last season Herbert is a huge upgrade
Disagree.

But hopefully he's made some improvements from early season games - defensively at least.

Because some of both his reads and his contact have been left wanting a few times in cup (and the trial for that matter).
