PAYTEN NAMES U20S SQUAD FOR HULL KR TRIAL
By Wayne Cousins
24/01/2012 5:39:51 PM

Wests Tigers U20s Head Coach Todd Payten will get a close look at his squad in match conditions for the first time at Concord Oval on Friday, January 27.

The former premiership winning prop is in his first season as Head Coach of the Wests Tigers U20s and has worked hard with his coaching staff over summer in preparation for the 2012 competition.

Payten has selected a 22 man squad for the match against a Hull KR Academy side. The clash with Wests Tigers is part of a 19 day pre-season tour of Australia for Hull KR.

The game kicks off at 6pm and will be played over 3 x 25 minute periods. Entry is free and supporters are welcome.

“We currently have a squad of 45 players which I need to cut down to 35 so this is an ideal opportunity for some of these guys to impress me in a match,’’ Payten said.

“It will be a good chance to run my eyes over the players before we have to make some really tough decisions.

“The squad has been training well and are focused on what they need to do. It will be a good physical hit out for these players up against a Hull KR side who will be out to impress their coaching staff.”

U20 players Matt Groat, Jacob Miller, James Tedesco, Curtis Sironen, Marika Koroibete, Mosese Fotuaika and Brendan Santi were not considered for the trial as they have been training with the NRL squad.

The Hul KR side is made up of U18 and U20s players.

"We have to treat this as what it is, which is a pre-season camp for the players because six days after they return, they will play their first game in the under 20s competition,’’ said Hull KR Head of Youth Martin Dunn.

Wests Tigers squad: Jordan Marshall, Harry Grove, Michael Kai, Ngamanu Winitana, Matt Mulcahy, Manaia Rudolph, Connor Toia, Jarrod Szczudlo, James Luff, Soni Paasi, Sita Akauola, Andy Fiagatusa, Luke Williams, Adrian Tatola, Luke Hickey, Tim Hurst, Jake Waugh, Nafoa Lepai, Menaia Cherrington, Jack Madden, Mitchell Moses, Nathan Scarano.

Jordan Marshall will be interesting to watch

Indeed. He is a lightweight, but I also suspect he is very good on his feet. Could be lethal in broken field play.

You'll hear this surname quite a bit from Matts thru SG Ball & NYC 20s for quite a few years to come, imo.

Well there are 7 of them, 3 more to follow Adrian - Faseo, Junior and Mateo.

interesting that Tedesco has been training with the NRL squad. I thought we had too many options for fullback already. Atleast it gives Jordan Marshall a chance to prove himself though.

Mate of mine told me Nathan Scarano could be a massive Center for us and is lightning quick

Any word on Andrew Vela he was meant to be one of the guns in the Aussie school boys side? He was in the initial squad listed on the official site back in December.

Most of the big guns are being rested for this game, Vela included.

Not really, Tedesco will more than likely get a crack in FG this year. He'll be one to watch for sure.

Sa Fifita, is that the name your looking for, he has a brother David. I'm not sure if Sa is the same relation though. He was a Keebra boy who was compared to Israel Folau and SBW!!!

Sa Fifita is unrelated to the other Fifita boys. I had a previous thread hovering around somewhere as I am unsure why Sa is not in the U20's portrait photos. I haven't discovered the reason yet but I understand he has a great deal of talent so I hope to see him in our colours.
