Performance of Kiwi Halves - Kick up the backside for Benji?

Benji may not have been setting the world on fire…by his own admission, but in no way has he been bad enough to demote from first grade.

before he could fall back on the excuse that we lost the battle in the forwards… atm our forwards are going as good as they ever have.

benji is suffering from withdrawl symptom of sheens' style of play

The funny thing is that Benji hasn't really been poor at all. He simply hasn't been as flashy as he can be and we need him to be. At the same time he hasn't made many mistakes. He is basically playing the way a lot of peeps want him to play.

Exactly! im liking conservative benji tbh; better than 'full of errors' benji and I think he can up his game now that our forwards are a bit more settled (more disciplined 😛ray: ) and our backs will be a far more capable attacking force; moltz, teddy and koro plus some running game from benj.

Benji has openly stated that he is not happy with his 2013 form…that's good enough for me...

He said exactly the same thing about his 2012 form. I wonder when he is actually gonna do something about it?

While he is out injured, I think Benji needs to do some soul-searching to find out why it is that other halves seem to find it so difficult to play with him.

I hope potter uses the old school tactic and drop him for a game or two before putting him back in the side. I'd just love to see how he responds to it. I honestly think he needs it, I'm not sure potter being new around the place has the plums to do it though.

It might do him the world of good, but the risk of playing someone like Marshall in a C Grade competition is far too big in today's game…

He needs to focus on his basics first, build confidence and then expand from there... Marshall is always one game away from hitting top form. Lets hope it is next week!

I think this will give him the opportunity to sit back and assess exactly what hasnt been working for his game this year. I do think with the way the forwards played against the Dragons that his natural game would have resulted in more points than we did achieve. You could potentially say the same thing for the Kiwi's on Friday night.

We only need 2 things from Benji when he comes back….make your tackles and run the ball.

There are a lot of issues here. One is that unless he produces some miracle play (eg flick pass to Pat Richards, 2005 GF) every second time he touches the ball, people say his form is down.

The main change this year is that having Miller at half just slowed down the ball getting to Benji and reduced the number of times he handled the ball. These are crazy outcomes. You want Benji with the ball in his hands. How many tackles he makes is irrelevant, surely. And, in any case he has been making 12-15 most games, which is Ok. Sironen will make 20-odd, so that works out well.

The first thing Benji will be thinking while he's recovering will probably be: 'Who the hell will be partnering me in the halves??' And we still don't have an answer. The job comes with an injury curse!

Don't agree at all, I think mostly people want to see Benji maybe get the ball a bit deeper sometimes and take the ball to the line with speed and purpose carrying it out in front in two hands selling a pass but using his step and just trying to bust through two defenders. The second thing is last tackle options improve, Third is kicking execution.
Just playing smarter more consistent and more direct football.
Does anyone remember the try he scored against St George in the semi in 05 off the scrum where he got the ball as a deep second man he just went at them and had the d in 2 minds? That's what I want from him more.

Yes a big call, but it might make him think that he's not the big dog anymore and if he doesn't rock up each week, there is a line of guys waiting to take his spot. A game in Reggies might get his mojo back, yeah a risk but why not try. He will hopefully come back thinking I don't want to play in Reggies again, so I will pull my finger out and be the player we all know and want him to be.
