Reasoned points. I personally think he was out of his depth. Pretty sure Dave Smith could have named all 16 teams without issue.

You have made my point exactly. Who cares if the chairperson knows the name of every team off the top of their head? That's not a pre-requisite of doing good business or setting strategy.

Dave Smith couldn't even point out Cameron Smith and instead made reference to Benji Barba. Didn't really stop him doing his job though.

That was what I was alluding to. Smith could have named 16 clubs but didn't know the games biggest names. It's not pivotal to the role but certainly helps the image to have a clue what's going on.

Tell me what Beattie has done. I’ve listened to him, not just what is interpreted reported by a third party but his actual words, speeches and interviews and he is absolutely clueless. He has plenty of opportunity to layout his plans and thoughts for the Rugby League but all you ever get is gibberish and cliches. The worst appointment by a long shot in a number of years. The guy is an idiot, and yes that is my opinion of him. Of course you are entitled to yours.

Well for starters, the burden of proof is on you, not me. I am not criticising or talking Beattie up, I am neutral about it. I am challenging the assertion that he hasn't done any good.

Of course you can believe he's an idiot, but I also think it's a grave mistake to judge someone solely by how they appear in the media. You don't like the way he talks, fine. That doesn't necessarily reflect on his business, management or strategy abilities.

Wayne Bennett is a horrible speaker, but he is judged on 40 years of coaching output, not how he performs at press conferences.

And actually I would submit that Beattie is quite active on taking his thoughts and strategy public - perhaps too much, through his twitter and press conferences, which inevitably leads to gaffes or mistakes. John Grant hardly said boo in his 6 years as Chair.

Do you not ever notice a trend how the administrators are always unpopular? That's because they push against the clubs and the club agendas. There's a reason it's an independent group. Clubs cause half the media stir around the ARLC.

So what did Beattie do? In < 2 years of him being Chair, the ARLC has:
- launched the NRL Women's comp
- pushed through the no-fault stand-down for players in criminal trouble
- lobbied successfully for the NSW Govt to rebuild/refurbish ANZ and SFS
- signed a new deal for the Grand Final to stay in Sydney
- Magic Round in Brisbane
- SOO deals with Perth and Adelaide
- Defined their Pacific Test strategy including Tier 1 Tonga
- Admitted Fiji to NSWRL
- Brought the expansion discussion back to the table

Now I'm not saying he's an outstanding success and I don't know how much he is personally responsible for the above strategies. There are obviously negatives as well, which I cannot clearly say whether or not he is responsible. E.g. the reffing situation I believe falls to the NRL not the ARLC.

So you don't like the way he talks, or you think he sounds like he has no clue. I again put it to you that anyone who has been re-elected State premier 4 times cannot be a clueless moron, unless the entire voting populace of QLD are themselves morons.

Nah that's fair enough mate. I re-read my post and I didn't articulate it very well. I tend to do bash my posts in while the idea/point is fresh in my head and I often don't communicate it very well.

The question that has to answered is Rugby League better or worse after his appointment. The answer is a resounding worse. Crowds and TV audience are disappearing faster than ever before. This will most likely affect the next TV deal. Changes are made on the fly without due diligence to the consequences of those changes. The buck stops with Beattie. Feb can’t come around soon enough.
