After the start to this season after last season's debacle, I have been reflecting on what our Top 30 squad lacks. I'm going to do a few posts over the next week or so in this thread on characteristics that is lacking in our squad to shape what our recruitment & development needs.
I watch most NRL games most weekends and have done so over quite a few years so whilst I'm no coach, I'm just using 'common sense' and 'observation'. This first one is on:
Attitude / Personality Type / Aggression
I would rate the Tigers as the bottom team for having these type of players in the roster. You go through our top 17 from last week and I reckon only David Klemmer, John Bateman, Brent Naden, Api Koroisau & funnily enough Alex Seyfarth possess these qualities. I think Fonua Pole, AJ Kepaoa, Stefano Uto have to a degree & I'd love to see the Shawn Blore from his debut match!
Unfortunately we have too many passive types in our squad and players that look depressed/mope who things go against us. The spine of a team can't have these types of players (or 1 at the most) and we have 3 of the 4 positions.
Even in NSW Cup, we don't have many of these except for Justin Matamua, Atasi James & possibly Bula, Mansfield & sometimes Joffa.
We need more aggressive, vocal, lead-by-show & players with swagger and rid our squad of some of the passive mopers i.e. Nofa, Brooks, Laurie, Doeuhi, Twal. It's no coincidence that we have been struggling over the past few seasons having been led by these players and the likes of James Tamou.
I think Sheens & co are on the right track with the recruitment of Bateman & Klemmer. We need more of them and we need to progress the players in junior reps that possesses these qualities. You can already see it in our Magpies HM squad with Laulili, Da Silva, Saukuru, Galvin, Miller & Faagutu.
I will try to think of some players who fit this bill that could be recruitment targets but straight away I can think of George Williams & Jack Welsby.

- Top teams have a good mix of personality types in their roster from your alpha male to your more passive follower types.
- These clubs :
- have players who are noticeably vocal on-field both when things are going for & against them,
- have players that show aggressive emotion which can rub off on their team mates,
- have players that noticeably provide direction in voice & gestures,
- have players that fire up in a good way when things go against them to try to get their team mates to fire up & lift their spirits,
- have players that show aggression by pulling off a big hit or a big play
- have players that show arrogance/swagger
