<big>PLAYERS CALL ON FANS TO 'STEP UP'</big>

Thursday, 10 December 2009

There was plenty of fun and mayhem as Wests Tigers players took to the phones at Concord Oval on Thursday, December 10, as part of the 2010 Step Up Membership campaign.

More than 30 players joined coach Tim Sheens in the membership department as they made calls to 2009 members to encourage them to ‘Step Up’ and become a real part of the team next year.

Sheens took it upon himself to ring the 2009 Foundation members where he spent more than an hour talking to at least 20 people about renewing whilst in between talking about the excitement of the season ahead.

Knowing the importance of membership, captain Robbie Farah took time out from his annual leave to get on the phones. His first client was a six-year-old boy who couldn’t believe he was talking to one of his idols.

Other players, who in their own words ‘nailed a few calls’, included Keith Galloway, Jason Cayless, Liam Fulton, Bryce Gibbs, Taniela Tuiaki, Arana Taumata, Tim Moltzen, Tame Tupou, Geoff Daniela, Mitch Brown, Robert Lui, Junior Roqica and Aaron Woods.

Renowned pranksters Gibbs and Fulton were up to their old tricks again. Taking turns, each introduced themselves as ‘Keith Galloway here’. Galloway just laughed before claiming to have made “20,000 phone calls”.

Winger Beau Ryan had an identity crisis when after introducing himself as “Beau Ryan, Wests Tigers winger here’ to a fan, the shocked fan replied “who is it”. To which Beau replied, “Beau Ryan, the guy from the latest Lowes catalogue’.

The once shy Tuiaki even called 2SM Talkin Sport host and big Wests Tigers fan Gavin Robertson on air to encourage 'Robbo' to 'Step Up' and become a 2010 member. Tuiaki has vowed to keep the 'pressure on' Robbo until he signs up.

Chris Heighington may have found himself a career outside of rugby league after he borrowed a television camera to film Farah talking. Heighington knew the tricks of the trade as he placed two fingers over his closed right eye.

All in all, it was a fun afternoon but a very successful membership drive by Wests Tigers

good read.
if we wanted to becheeky, the fans could turn the headline of this topic around to be " Fans call players to step up and make top 8".

if it was so successful why are they so scared of giving us numbers its only obvious that the level of success is measured by actual memberships.

I got some interesting numbers from WT personnel about 2 months ago. You'd be extremely surprised at how successful the numbers came up in just about every department from memberships increasing, crowd numbers, sponsorships, merchandise sales to website hits.
To suggest they are scared to give you numbers is absolutely hilarious. Do you think the multi-million dollar organisation needs to prove to Billiebob Magpie about how well they are actually doing?

Where the Numbers similar to these

From the telecrap a few days ago…...

If accurate.......4000 Members in 2009...not bad......

The number for 2009 was DEFINITELY over 4000+. The exact number would escape me and i would not have a clue how accurate the Telecrap's figures were.
Take into consideration that plenty of these 4000+ members have children who aren't actual members as well. But that isn't to sugarcoat the figures as that would apply to EVERY club.
WestsTigers website, i'm pretty sure had the MOST hits for a Sydney club considering they did NOT even play finals football.
WT were either leading at the time or very close to leading Sydney sales regarding merchandise sales for the year. Also was right up there regarding crowds for a Sydney team AGAIN.
The club has done remarkably well across ALL areas considering the disappointing results the past 4 seasons. This can only IMPROVE once again if the winning culture is displayed on the field.
The staff behind the operations have all worked extremely hard for a lot of things supporters take for granted and sometimes go unnoticed.

Like being pro-active with their membership drive campaign such as direct mailing list approach, players picking up the phones and actually talking to their members for membership renewals, corporate packaging, members surveys on how to further improve operations, taking their merchandise van interstate and to places such as country areas where their products can sometimes not be reached. Setting up a new stores in their leagues clubs and now the Macarthur region.

I'm talking about some families who have kids who are at a young age who gain free entry and don't require season passes nor membership packages…

But your daughter's child's membership would count to the total tally..

Want more members??? Make the top 8 for a change. Once in 19 seasons in the playoffs means they need to do more than have current players call me. Id want a direct call from Laurie Nichols!!!

All those things you mentioned are all well known or well publicised.
At the end of the day its just the club and its staff doing their jobs.

you bet theyve got a duty to tell us the fans the numbers because without us they are no longer a multi-million dollar business as you like to put it but more of a two bob hooker this is the wests tigers not the microsoft micronauts.
We are very quick to find numbers regarding merchandise, crowds e.t.c which are always good and thats great. But getting numbers on membership e.t.c is like trying to find elvis presley the one-tooth tigers out there deserve this.Come to think of it I havent heard the name Billiebob since the great days of the fatman in white crouching tiger are you Elvis presley. :righton: :righton: :righton:

I was a little surprised to see that the Wests Tigers members no.s were so low. I assumed we would have a larger member base than 4014 in 2009, and not yet 2000 for 2010\. They seem to be doing a good job seeking new members, so hope it improves over the next couple of months. Still the club does have a lot of fans & supporters - but they are not ready to put their hands in their pockets yet.. personally I think that if you live in Sydney what you get for your money as a member is a pretty good deal

Wests Tigers is a contin uation of a team i followed through 19 years with 1 finals appearance. Feel free to do your own count back for Western Suburbs. Might even be further. The pain has carried from Magies/Balmain to the Wests Tigers. But if you feel the need to only udge on Wests Tigers then let me rephrase my original quote….

It's a bit of a catch 22 I think.
The club says they lose money playing at the traditional venues, but by playing at the SFS and SCG, I'm sure they lose members as well. I wouldve thought that if they did play at the traditional venues more, then more members would join, and more money would be made at the Leagues clubs which would surely nullify any loss incurred by playing at these suburban grounds.
I think a lot fans think, 'well they're playing 3/4 of our games out of my area why should I become a member?' before they even look at what deals are available.

Add to that, as has been said before, play our games at the traditional venues = more wins = better season = more members and sponsors hopping on board.

Good point Jazza catch 22 it is.It would be interesting to get some maths on extra memberships at local venues compared to sfs cash with bigger crowds e.t.c

Id suggest that the profit we make out of having games elsewhere would be far out weigh any additional members from having all games at the traditional grounds. In fact, you could easily make an argument that having the games at the sfs actually improves memberships…..because if half the game were at campbelltown, i certainly wouldnt be committing myself to full memberships. But with games at Leichhardt and SFS and other more convenient places than Campbelltown there is value in buying the membership.
