See we have reached our debt ceiling of $300 billion and neither the Govt or Opposition can agree on a new amount

Any chance we can see what happened in the US where people who worked for non essential govt agencies are sent home until the problem is fixed

I wouldn't worry Happy, Abbott is in talks with the Greens to abolish the debt ceiling altogether, even though before the election he promised not to do deals with independents.

This website is the Australian office of financial management, where the government borrows money

http://aofm.gov.au/content/upcoming_tender_notice.asp

As you can see the government are planning on borrowing 800m tomorrow and 1.5b on Friday.

As you can see on the 26th Nov they borrowed 200m. On the 27th, 800m. On the 29th, another 800m.

The coalition's borrowing has stayed on pace with Labor's. they are contributing to the deficit from now on. Why was debt bad then and good or irrelevant now?

You dont have to be too clever to know that until the Libs are allowed to pass cost saving measures, it will need to continue to borrow to pay for Labors irresponsible spending.

Anyway, Abs Man could borrow up to the $500b cieling and still only have increased debt by 67%

Dismissing the GFC as an excuse… Right... Makes sense.... It's just that thing that destroyed the American economy as well as most of Europe... I wonder who stopped us from going down the same road? Oh yeah. That's right. It was that labor government. Funny how they screwed us over like that

The GFC didnt destroy the American economy… Years and years of irresponsible spending and poor financial practices destroyed the American economy.

The GFC that you are referring to was simply the bubble which popped!

Get ready for the next one... tick tock, tick tock!!!

But The coalition aren't planning on making any meaningful savings.

The Coalition would improve the budget bottom line by more than $6 billion and would increase spending to health and education, Mr Hockey said.

6 billion is not a meaningful amount, it will be gone in a nanosecond if the global economy takes another dip and there are revenue writedowns.

Regardless they could start making savings now without needing to pass new laws. They don't need to pass laws to sack public servants. They just need the balls to stand up for their own convictions. They don't have any. They will hide behind an 'independent' commission of audit headed by the big business lobby.

Wise up. This country is very nearly a basket case because of your mob. It will take years and years to get it right again. Stop watching the ABC and educate yourself on the facts. You seem to be drinking far to much Kool-Aid.

Sorry Col should we just get our news from News Limited hacks instead? Amazingly the Fairfax press make the same criticisms of this current government - are they in on the giggle too? Or is it more a case of the facts being a bit overwhelming so it's time to resort to type and playing the man?

I love how News Limited are calling the ABC bias when News delieved us headlines such as:

Pretty disgraceful reporting. Hate DT with a passion in particularly politics and league. Absolute drop kicks that don't deserve to write opinion pieces for a NEWSpaper as headlines let alone front covers.

The ABC is terrible with there current bias against the Government… The Government should strip them of funding until they start providing non-bias opinions. There attacks on Campbell Newman is far worse than there efforts on Abs Man, and I have started to turn them off on m radio.

Always loved the ABC 'nuetral' position in the media world... Shame on them!

who gives a shit who works for who… There reporting is bias and they don't have that charter as Ausutralia's national news broadcaster!

On what basis does the ABC have a bias? Where is the evidence that they're under-reporting negative ALP stories and over-reporting negative Coalition stories? Where is the evidence the coverage has misrepresented a story to favour one side of politics over the other?

It's amazing you lot suddenly fire up about this supposed ABC bias just after the Murdoch Press have done the same.

The ABC is probably the news channel with the least bias… People just get angry when they point out how stupid Tony Abbott is.

Can you please enlighten us what you would have done differently from an economic management point of view? It's very easy to make claims of how the place is a basket case, but some reasons would be helpful.

What a load of crap. Other stations show bias but they are not a publicly owned enterprise.
