WESTS Tigers coach Mick Potter has had a ‘meet-and-greet’ with his club’s new board — but there is still no exact timeline when his future will be decided.

Potter met the board for the first time at a meeting on Tuesday night.

It is understood Potter told the board, which now has three NRL appointed directors, why he should be retained and explained why his crashed out of this year’s finals race so spectacularly.

The board will hold further internal meetings before determining Potter’s fate.

A final decision on whether Potter is retained or sacked made not be reached until early next week.

All club CEO Grant Mayer said was: “There is a clear process in place and the board and management will not be making any further comment.”

Potter is unlikely to have the numbers at board level to be offered a new deal.

His future was probably sealed after Wests Tigers bombed over the latter stages of the season.

The board tried to secretly dump Potter mid-season but the decision was leaked to the media.

Potter then survived but the team’s season started burning from that moment.

The Daily Telegraph revealed during the week that St Helens and former Dragons coach Nathan Brown had emerged as a Wests Tigers coaching candidate.
 
Even when there is absolutely no new information, it doesn't stop these journos from writing about us.
 
It's metrics driven. They can extremely easily measure which articles get the most clicks. The articles about Wests Tigers obviously get loads of clicks so they just make more and more with absolutely no information and get a huge ROI because they get clicks without doing anything at all.

The Tigers hadn't contacted him and in an interview he gave in England he was wanting to see Saint Helens take the new step and wasn't going anywhere

At least the SMH looked at both sides of the argument questioning not just Potter's credentials but also Mayer's
 
Never say never.

Publicly Potter has been all class and integrity. That is one thing in his favour.

2nd thing in his favour is a new board where they should be open minded about the problems he will list within the club. When the board hears Potters side, and let's face it, he would have plenty to say, then things will sway more in his favour. Probably not enough to save his job but you never know.

Maybe, the board will understand that Potter has had no power and his recommendations on his assistants, strength and conditioning etc etc sound very promising.

Maybe he will point out that being undermined meant no chance of keeping the early season mentality within the group…something that is crucial to any success.

When questioned about his ability to implement game plans and bring youngsters along he will point out that he started the season simple, being careful to not put too much pressure on Brooks. He played him on the left with Anasta on the right to ease him in. Mid season saw this change as Brooks was given more reign with both he and Anasta playing both sides and Lawrence and Simon a switching. We looked a million dollars in that 20 minutes this planned switch was in place but then Simona a got injured forcing Lawrence back to the left....soon followed Telesco getting injured, and then the list goes on regarding injuries.
This above 20 minute period shows Potter was working to a plan all along and it was to the benefit of our young half and ultimately the benefit of our team.

It's extremely admirable that Mick Potter didn't waver from his long term plan to try and gain short term success to save himself. He put the club first 100% of the time. An amazing attribute under the circumstances.

IMO if injuries didn't hit during that game and the following games where Potter made those attacking changes then we wouldn't be in this situation now, we would be playing against the Roosters Saturday night.

Maybe the board will see this
 
Before you turf someone, it's always beneficial to listen to their side of the story. From the outside looking in it looks as though Potter has had a stone-age HPU, poor rehabilitation, very little support from his boss and his subordinates operating on self interest. The board would have rocks in their head to arsehole him purely on recommendation as there are obvious mitigating factors to the poor performance at the end of the season. Some are very obvious, but there may be other issues that the public are not aware of.

How the hell would they know this when it's a totally new board which will be taking all factors into account….muppets
 
Sadly, its pretty obvious there is dis-unity in the player ranks vs coaching ranks…

So if Pottsy stays, which players do we get rid of?
 
The good thing about the new board is they will consider everything hopefully before making any decisions,the pulling of the wool over their eyes no longer should exist.If these people are astute business people we should be finally heading in the right direction from admin through to playing roster…

Disagree. i think he is no chance of being retained. All the crap from this year will continue to resurfance every time there is some drama or we lose a number of games. He will never be able to undertake the role without previous baggage getting in the way. this is not his fault, it is mayers and the previous boards fault, but it is realistic and i would be amazed if he is retained.

While it is understood the board spoke of their respect for the job Potter has done in difficult circumstances during his two-year tenure at Concord, the fact they have not offered him a new deal has led some to believe a decision has been made to look elsewhere for a coach. However, directors are expected to make a decision on whether Potter is the right man for the job before considering alternatives and as the former Catalans, St Helens and Bradford mentor remains contracted to the club until October 31 he is likely to be in charge when players return to training on Monday after a week-long break since their final match of the season against Cronulla last Saturday.

Despite the uncertainty over who will coach the Tigers next season, several players have been told they are free to consider other offers, while the club has been linked to Gold Coast's Brad Takairangi. While Melbourne are also reportedly interested in Takairangi, a New Zealand Rugby League media release announcing players selected in the Kiwis train-on for the upcoming Four Nations listed his club as Wests Tigers.

Moltzen, fullback Kurtis Rowe, props Jack Buchanan and Nathan Brown, hooker Joel Luani have all been advised they can look elsewhere for next season but the Tigers will honour their contracts if they choose to stay. Second-rower Bodene Thompson is among a handful of other players off contract, while Anasta, Fulton and Cory Paterson have retired.

The Tigers have also advertised for the newly created job of general manager of football, which is a position at most AFL clubs and would be similar to the role filled by Rodney Eade at Collingwood. It is understood there have already been a high number of applicants.

Meanwhile, the Tigers remain keen to keep utility Blake Austin and do not plan to release him, despite his desire to join Canberra next season.
 
Anasta was on sports fan clubhouse last night,when asked not to sit on the fence about Potter he said"I would like Mick to get a 1 year extension to see what he can do with his own assistants not club appointed ones."
Then when asked about his reply he said "but I think Mick is gone unfortunately",so our Mick I think is going to be let go.

Is there? Or is there disunity in the head coach vs assistant coaching ranks?

I hope the Board takes the time to investigate where the disunity was centred and excise it completely. A little bit of cancer is still cancer.

I know its pretty obvious and we always want to know what's going on, but seriously, Anasta is still contracted to the Wests Tigers till the end of November and disclosing such messages is simply irresponsible!
 
You'll find that most head Coach's appoint close mates as their Assts so they know there'll be no sniping from within. It's common knowledge that Payten and Kidwell were angling for the top job, sadly for them this will count against them when it's time for them to seek roles elsewhere. As much as i feel Potter deserves a year with his own appointed staff I fear Robbie and his band of sooks will sabotage another year. So sadly we need our 3rd Coach in 4 seasons.
I really hope Robbie likes the next guy.
