Prediction - We will be the most penalised side in the NRL

Again I don't want to base this just off a few games of 9s. Im just worried that perception can become reality in terms of how refs game plan and do their homework. We were undisciplined last season, and have started off in the same mould in the trial and in the 9s. The refs and refs coaches will be watching and talking about this.

I thought it was a really inexperienced ploy by David Kidwell to talk so strongly about slowing down the play the ball in some interviews. Obviously we (and lots of other sides) need to improve our contact and our wrestle however talking about it in that ways only brings unwanted tip sheets for the refs. You can say it is a minor detail but like i said for the ref perception is reality. Implementing a Melbourne style technique here could take alot of time, and if done poorly, means double digit penalty counts against you.

I think with a really young side, a raw side, trying to improve "slowing down the play the ball" could come at the expense of being penalised out of games. The other problem he have is we are rated as favourites for the wooden spoon. It is easier for refs to pinger "smaller sides" because the lack of hype and lack of fall out that goes with it. I dont think refs do it on purpose however sub consciously it is certainly a factor in all big time leagues, the lower sides dont get the 50-50 calls. So we need to make every effort to be disciplined and clean in the ruck, where the refs find these 50-50 penalties.

Im not bagging us, I just think Kidwell needs to be savvy about the way he approaches it. Becaise i think we will be on a number of tip sheets, as the early signs are not good.

You make a good point about Kidwell when it comes to the media. Why not just lie ?

Basically though I think that if we play well enough to beat whoever we are playing we will win.

If a team looks so laborious and awkward in their tackling technique then it gives the refs the impression that they are deliberately spoiling the ruck, even if they aren't and are simple inefficient at it. It's all about perception. Our guys visibly struggle in defense, from first contact down to the tacklers getting to marker after the tackle. That's why we will give more penalties away.

We bought the league's supposed best wrestler in Blair

We brought in on ourselves to a degree

The Tigers are bigger and stronger on the edges of the ruck now , hopefully the won't be the victims of the referees wrath

Against the sides where we are still outgunned and outmatched the only thing that will keep us in games is giving away penalties

If we don't we will get belted

The team that seems to be on the back foot usually comes off second best with the refs. This teams needs to win the respect of the refs, other teams and its own fan base and it can only do that by on field performances

Agree coach, teams like Storm and Souths can get away with more, because they have earnt respect. Even if other sides loathe the likes of Manly and Melbourne, they certainly respect them because of their consistent, tough football ear in year out. We need to try and earn that, but we also need to be smart about the way we approach things. Kidwell labouring over the fact we need to work really hard on slowing down the play the ball after running 15th is not something he should be saying in my opinion.
