OFFICIAL Q&A Club discussion with Shaun Mielekamp

I asked Shaun a question reguarding if he has begun looking into our toxic culture, if in some way i worded my question in a way that seemed rude or offensive to Shaun then please let me be the first to apologise as his input is very much appreciated and in no way did i intend to come accross as being derogatory or rude toward Shaun or anyone of the moderators in the forum. If any offence was taken, please accept my sincerest apology.

Hey everyone

I've got some time today and checking back in. It looks like I may have missed a lot of posts since my last visit and I really do appreciate the honestly and also the moderation. It is why I do value the forum because it is a place for genuine debate and discussion in an effective environment. It is impossible to have these discussions on general social media as it brings a whole world of trolls, out of touch people, politics and also hits home where family members and kids can get exposed.

I do have 4 sons and yes they do have to live everyday with their mates, teachers and schoolyard interactions all talking about the Wests Tigers and my job. It comes with the territory but highlights for me why i do appreciate the effectiveness of this space. So thanks Suzie Q and Krissy, i don't know what I missed and trust you guys have a handle on what should and should not happen here.

My main purpose being on here is to show to proof that the voices, opinion and debate here is valued - even when the criticism is harsh and deserved i need to hear it. Personal attacks however should not happen on any online platform but i truly value that the forum gives me a safe environment to have meaningful and sometimes challenging conversations or debate.

From what I can see there are some key themes that i'll touch on here and then i'll jump back on tomorrow and answer what I can that comes through today and tonight. I suppose the overall key theme from me is that right now is a time of "stay tuned" as we get through the internal end of season processes.

Membership for 2027:
Pretty obvious that there are a lot of members wondering what their options are for 2027 and if they will decide to continue their membership. The club has a big job to do here in communicating with members on what 2027 looks like on and off the field. I'm acutely aware that actions by the club are more important than marketing campaigns, press conferences and social media posts to answer this properly. We will keep communicating on the 2027 membership as it roles out and also keep communicating on the steps we are taking on and off the field to keep taking the club forward.

Stadium and home game questions:
A few stadium questions have come through. 2027 will be aimed to be evenly split between Commbank and Campbelltown but we won't truly know until November the exact breakdown. Magic round is already contracted as well. 2028 is the same principle but will have Leichhardt and Commbank and whilst Magic round is not yet contracted it will be considered.
2029+ is the long term model of minimum 7 games Campbelltown, minimum 3 games Leichhardt and flexibility to increase at both and consider global round, magic rounds etc etc

Trial games for 2027 are yet to be determined but as a Vegas team we will play in the earlier weeks and expecting to be playing against Parramatta and or Titans - venues are also not determined as this process in underway with the NRL who make the call here.

Fan Unity discussion:
One of my biggest take aways from the last couple weeks is on the fan unity topic and to achieve this we have to start with alignment at board and pathways. This is important feedback for me to receive in a forum like this because it matches the direct feedback we get from members via membership department and allows me to highlight this at all levels of the club. Also that whilst there is some strong support for the foundation clubs there is a lot that are not fazed or worried about others and they just support Wests Tigers and look forward.
I know this is a challenging topic and your feedback does help me shape my understanding as I appreciate that whilst I have been in the club for a couple of years now it goes a long way back.

Pathways:
I just want to echo that this remains a huge priority and focus for me, I truly believe that this is a fundamental piece of the puzzle for our long term success and vital for our on-field performance. We will take some steps forward in 2027 with the resources and application to the coaches and pathways. I know there is a lot of feedback from members about the branding of teams and the structures of our pathways - we are going through a process here that will take time. There are lot of stakeholders and layers involved in this and getting the right model for our club to the maximise the potential of the southwest.

NRL structure:
A review has been ongoing since I started as GM of Football and then CEO to continue to find improvements here. Pat Richards appointment and role is a vital component as the period where I was wearing two hats as an interim was not effective. To answer some questions here there was a recruitment process for Pat's role and several candidates were interviewed and considered. Pat had been working for me directly in the club for the last couple of years and since starting has had a lot to deal with. He has handled this with great leadership and strength. I am very confident we will all see Pat grow and deliver as a vital figure in our club.
Further changes to coaching structures personnel is not appropriate to discuss publicly however I do want to recognise the wish for this to be discussed and when we can talk about this we will.

Jerseys:
A few questions on jerseys and heritage jerseys. It is an important communication piece that we have to get right on the jersey plan for 2027 and beyond. I can't steal the thunder for our marketing department on jersey release dates, designs and colours but I will ensure that we better communicate what jerseys are being worn when and why. It is important to note that the club drives the jersey plans for colours, designs and match allocations - not the boards. We work closely with the kit manufacturer on achieving the best commercial outcomes, we learnt a lot last year with the new provider and confident that we will continue to improve. Once the draw has been confirmed we will then look to confirm the allocation of jerseys for the season - I would like to make sure everyone knows what jerseys are being worn before the teams run out from the tunnel.

Whilst here I do want to give a huge shout out to the amazing performance of our NRLW team and department. This has been a shining light and gives us confidence to know that we drove change here and the results are because of this - the more support we can give here does do a heck of a lot for the club at all levels.

Again thanks everyone I will jump back on tomorrow and try to answer a few direct questions - i hope that the above post has covered a few questions that was there.

Thanks Shaun, I think I speak for the majority who really appreciate the time and effort you are doing to communicate to & engage with the fans.

On one hand we are an impatient bunch given what the club has put fans through the past 20 odd years but, on the other hand, we are a patient bunch because most will stay solid if we can see a distinct plan & steps in place to achieve this over time.

Just a couple of quick questions ...

1. Pathways communications - please don't underestimate how much we value communication & content around our pathways teams & squads (not just NRL). It allows us to form a bond with our talented youngsters coming through and watch them progress over many years.

PS. I say this because I have seen nothing from the club this season announcing who were our junior rep players of the year, coaches award, player's player etc from SG Ball down to Andrew Johns Cup.

2. Player contracts - can you shed some light on what type of contracts exist for players in our club from juniors up to NRL? We know there are NRL Top 30, Development (up to 6), Train & Trial (pre-season & full season) ... but below this, what contracts exist for our talent coming through? I've seen agents put out Insta posts with a young player on a 'Pathways contact'. Can you please elaborate on what ages these are for & how many the club try to contract each season?

Thanks Shaun, a couple of different questions from the usual lol

Hi Shaun , again thanks for giving up time to answer our questions , my couple are.
How can we not play as Wests Tigers in our reserve grade side , is it these 20 debenture holders making us play as Wests Magpies instead of being a united front for Wests Tigers , I thought players strive to play for the main team ( juniors I get it ) Balmain and Wests , but once you get to reserve grade it should be united Wests Tigers .who is making this call ?
2- jersey for games , why do we have 3 magpies on our main Wests Tigers playing strip , I don’t think it was there early in the season , why the change ? And will it revert back to a small Balmain logo and a small wests logo only next year , again Wests Tigers logo is a tiger head not a magpie . Do these people making the decision know it just annoys people .

Thanks so much Shaun for your feedback and other info to us. Are you able to advise if the HBG / Wests Tigers (whoever is appropriate) will try to engage further with Wests Campbelltown to get greater financial involvement with the WT to counter / supplement (wrong word but Im at work typing this quickly) the inner west focus of Balmain Tigers and Wests Magpies (Ashfield) with a hoped for longer term plan of 1 x inner city club facility and 1 x SW club facility at Campbelltown.

Hey liltiger, I might have missed your original question but happy to answer this one. Firstly whilst I don't buy into the "toxic" part I can say that yes the cultural & standards are a huge focus. There are key areas that upon reflection are learnings for the club. For example the clarity on identity of what does it mean to be a Wests Tiger needs to be better defined for all players and staff at all levels. This is also why i am passionate about the pathways because here we can ensure we drive better standards and cultures from the first touchpoint and build our DNA.

I am very much in regular comms with Wests Macarthur and our long term plans for facilities in the South West. Particularly for the pathways I regional sports facility that compliment the junior league is a vital piece of the puzzle and Campbelltown Council are also a key driver for this. I;m confident this will happen, just unsure of timelines.

So great to have an NRL CEO talk directly with the fans. Much appreciated.

My main question is about JERSEYS. I'm a huge proponent of ORANGE and the STRIPES. We are called the WESTS TIGERS after all. Tigers are our animal and like I've posted before, consistently rank high in kids' favourite animals, so for the sake of the future, leaning into the TIGER aspects of our designs is vital, IMO.

I personally loved this year's kit. Well done. Although there has been a clear decision somewhere in the second half of the year to make the WHITE jersey our primary jersey. Kids know us as the TIGERS. Tigers are orange with black stripes. We are the only team with ORANGE as one of our three major colours. Why would we go away from this? Please don't tell me it was something pushed by the old Magpies contingent. If so, that is very disappointing and short-sighted.

We are WESTS TIGERS not Balmain or Western Suburbs. Give us stripes. Give us claws. Give us TIGERS! thank you.

Shaun,

You are a straight shooter. Was there an issue between HBG and Shane Richardson when he was trying to make the NSW Cup Team Wests Tigers?

Honestly feels like as a club we have take. 1 step forward and 2/3 steps back and feels worse than winning 3 wooden spoons. I am gutted, but i do not see that in the playing group.

Pathways, i look at clubs like the Warriors/Knights/Storm why is when they debut players the look physically ready for NRL? When the majority of WT debut their physicality and defence is not up to NRL standard. How do you fix that?

You are new, but majority of the people here are suffering from 15 years of pain. 95% of people want the club to succeed as Wests Tigers not Balmain or Wests. The current game plan of high competition and hope for the best is not working. You were part of the conversations but as fans we were led to believe a player sat out due to standards, looking at his game on the weekend he didn’t meet them as a senior player. Would that happen with Sticky or Bellyache? We need to be better in so many ways.. To finish the year with 11 straight loses is unacceptable, we are the dragons from last year and look how they went this year.
Hey Fainu Brothers.
I don't actually know if Richo did directly try to rebrand the NSW Cup team to Wests Tigers. In my time I had not heard that this was directly tabled or discussed - it could have happened before I started but no-one has said to me that this happened or what happened if it did, Richo included.
Obviously your post was before the Roosters match so I'm sure we are all equally relieved that we are not talking about 11 straight losses to finish a season.

The allocation of what jerseys are being played where is done prior to the season starting and is done by the staff here at the club not boards. the Club did not communicate this at all to the fans and was a huge miss, the only mitigating factor for the staff is that this was all taking place in December and January when the world was turned upside down at the club and the comms were missed. We will improve this 1000% for next season

Hey 426TIgerland
There is a lot of history and background here, to be honest I am just getting my head around the 26 year journey here and a lot of this stems right back to when the club started. Also Lidcombe Oval plays a vital role in our pathways and this is operated by the Wests Magpies which is a vital facility for our pathways.

As far as the magpies on the shoulders of the jerseys this is a tradition also that stems all the way back to our inception. The magpie logo on the shoulders have always been on our jerseys this season so no change - no change for next season either. I can't actually claim to know the exact structure but I do know there is a special exemption from the NRL licensing for this to happen for all Wests Tigers jerseys.

I can say that at the start of the season our entire pathways communication was non-existent as we were short staffed. We have an amazing media team with some new (and old) faces in the team and I'll let them know the feedback on pathways comms. I agree this is an important area to ensure we keep focus on especially if we are to truly maximise our potential as a development club. What I can say though is that it is a tricky space, whilst every player, parent and supporter wants to know who the hottest property coming through in from a very young age we can run the risk of putting to much public exposure on young talent and also flags for other clubs the players they might want to try and steal from us.

With player contracts below the Top 30, Development and train/trial NRL contracts are the NSWRL contracts, These are for players from 15year old through to Cup contracts. Ultimately they are registration contracts that lock the player to the club for a set amount of time with certain benefits that are specific for each player.
An entry level contract for example might be for 3 years, includes medical cover, sign on fee ($1000) apparel, school levies and education expenses. These type of contracts secure players for Harold Matts and SG Ball for example.
The same format of contract but the increased benefits as you go higher up the pathways including a NSW Cup contract. The threshold is $20k where we can go over because it will then tip into the NRL cap calculations, so whilst there is no direct cap there is a level we can't go over without impacting the NRL cap. This is why you will see ex-NRL players at NSW senior club that can still get paid a decent per match payment but they won't play for the NRL reserve grade teams.

I'm not the expert in this area so I think I have most of it right but some astute forumites on here might be more articulate or accurate on this space of contracting for you.

Thanks Shaun.

- Coaching Question???

Is there plans to provide Benji Marshall additonal coaching support and / or change of asisstant coaches? It appears our coaching department is lacking heavily in experience and successful experience, along with people that may be able to challenge Benji.
