Re-Branding of Leagues Clubs SMH

The Magpies' two leagues clubs at Ashfield and Campbelltown would be renamed ''Wests Tigers'' if an NRL proposal was accepted, ranking it among the worst rebranding ideas ever to come from the headquarters of a corporation, akin to Coca-Cola's decision to launch ''New Coke''.

The NRL sought to rebadge the licensed clubs controlled by Wests and Balmain with the Wests Tigers logo during talks to settle the dispute between the co-owners of the NRL club. Wests' palace at Ashfield, whose foyer has giant portraits of the Magpies' rugby league and cricket teams of the century, would have had the magpie on its roof replaced by the tiger which has been caged since Balmain's Victoria Road club closed with debts of $7 million.

Ditto, Wests Leagues' booming premises at Campbelltown, while Balmain's two small operations at Flemington Markets and Five Dock would have had ''Wests'' added to their doors. Not only does the proposal of the NRL - aged only 15 - ignore the 105-year history of both Wests and Balmain, it is oblivious to the cause of the tension between the foundation clubs. Wests Tigers has lost a generation of Magpie fans because the NRL's own literature refers to it as the Tigers; some call it ''Balmain'' and its players are seemingly always dressed in orange. Renaming Wests Ashfield's premises - built on the deeds of Keith Holman, Arthur Summons, Noel Kelly and Tom Raudonikis

- Wests Tigers would have reinforced that perception. It's also presumptive to suggest Wests Campbelltown would welcome the tiger. It held one of Wests' five votes in the joint venture but surrendered it this year over frustration at time taken in board meetings ending in stalemates. Basically, Wests sought control via a 6-4 vote and the chairman's position, in exchange for funding that would settle debt and allow it to grow its Campbelltown fan and player base. Balmain refused. Hence the ARL Commission proposal to lend the joint venture $8 million (repayable) for Wests and Balmain each having two votes on a new seven-man board with three independent directors.

Hopefully, the ARLC's role in the choice of the three independents will not be as blind to history as its proposal to rebrand the licensed clubs. No one at the ARLC is owning up to the idea, except to say it didn't come from chief executive Dave Smith. Wests won't contribute money from their leagues club to the joint venture, simply because partners Balmain cannot.

It means a $17 million redevelopment at Ashfield will proceed, with the Magpies focused on bricks and mortar, rather than football. The $8 million loan will add to the pressure on the ARLC to meet its aim of setting aside $50million per year for a future fund. This year's $50 million has already been reduced to $38 million as a result of wrong budgetary forecasts, increased grants to NRL clubs, Cronulla's legal expenses over the supplements scandal and the establishment of an integrity unit.

The ARLC's determination to restore its $50million target has caused the NSWRL and QRL to be excluded from budget meetings and had their anticipated share of the $250million-a-year TV windfall slashed to a 3 per cent increase on last year's funding. This has resulted in a letter from the NSWRL's new chief executive, David Trodden, to Smith, protesting his league is being marginalised and treated as a business unit within the ARLC, rather than an ''organisation with broad-based (and independent) responsibilities for organisation of the game within our state''. Smith has basically told the state leagues to divorce themselves from community activities, claiming these are the responsibilities of the ARLC.

Trodden says in his letter that a review by former Queensland treasurer Andrew Fraser made no mention ''that 'community' or 'development' were areas for which we had no responsibility''. Fraser also reviewed Wests Tigers' corporate structure, yet directors admitted to being ''pissed off'' that his report paid scant attention to the imbalance between the joint venture partners over their ability to provide investment funds. The ARLC plans a review of its competition structure at the end of next season, causing speculation the Sharks may be relocated to Queensland. It won't happen, not with $45 million of revenue guaranteed over the next five years from the Sharks' residential and commercial development.

The commission should pay less attention to geography and more to history.

All those years ago we probably should've invented the Tigpie which could be a magpie tiger hybrid similar to a griffin .

>.<

I say most punters who go to the clubs would not give a dam what they are called,on the other hand I think the NRL have gone over the top if they expect two clubs to re brand to satisfy some funding arrangement. In this day and age the leagues clubs are just sponsorship partners and you would not see the NRL telling Meriton they have to re brand.

Always felt it was a yawn when others are paying the bills.
Roys right that the rebaging of the clubs will make some think Balmain has " taken over everthing" some already think that.
However, of more pressing concern is that we have been mentioned in dispatches in the tele regarding relocation due to Balmain financial trouble.
Its ok for now but you wouldn't want something to go wrong. Now that the NRL is reviewing the future and lending us a bailout we rely on their goodwill for our current form. Since we asked for financial help rather than keeping it in house clauses already exist for them to do what they like with us. 😛ray:

It is a yawn that old fossil Roy pipes up when we are moving in a different direction from the old structure. A guy who actually couldn't give two craps about the Wests Tigers and has taken up permanent residence next to Craig Bellamy's colon.

Re-branding should never be forced on any registered club. Is it a prudent move? In the case of Cambelltown it might just be. Wests Ashfield however is a well established brand based on poker machine revenue and subsequent property investment and the Wests Tigers brand itself would do little if anything to enhance that.

The two Balmain Tigers branded clubs are currently too small to be worthy of the Wests Tigers branding IMHO.

I think we are in a highly tenable position regardless of any financial woes from Balmain Leagues Club. This past season has shown the NRL how vital clubs like Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra actually are to their revenue stream, viewership and attendance figures. The people at League Central are very aware of this and want a Wests Tigers that is profitable in it's own right and bringing people to the game in a way that only clubs like WT, Bulldogs, Souths & The Dragons are able to do in Sydney.

The re-badging is a furphy argument thrown up to air some mates grievances and it bears no relevance to Wests Tigers IMHO

Things had quietened down and some positives were happening around the club…then enter Roy the magpie boy there is obviously an agenda being run by factions on the magpie side! That article is the greatest load of CRAP I have read nothing new but placed to cause further division. Grow up BOYS yes we all know things aren,t great lets just move on and before I,m enlisted as a Balmain boy I actually had black and white blood just have had a gut full of little men and there rubbish agendas!

This openness on the part of the press and the NRL to admit how vital Wests, St. George-Illawarra etc (the "big 6") is astounding. Success of the NRL requires these clubs to be successful….....is that really the business plan???

We are moving in a different direction alright…......debts and financial problems.
Truth is all Sydney clubs not privately owned need club assistance.

I'm completely with Dave Smith …....... the Leagues clubs should be re-branded Wests Tigers Leagues Clubs. And I think its certain to happen in the short to medium term .......... then we can finally be one true Club and not a joint venture which is what most of us on here want.

One club is a good idea knuckles but what type of a WT will it be.
Will it be a new club upholding both the legacy of Wests and Balmain or a rebadged balmain TIgers.
Truth is I and many others aren't terribly happy with the way the club is portrayed.

But over the last 2 weeks I have asked on thus forum some questions which concern all who love this ckub but nobody replies.

Is our debt sustainable?

How will it be repayed in view of Balmains current and possibly permanent lack of income stream?

The Arlc has made it clear that it has power to eliminate or relocate clubs it considers to be financially unsustainable. We have reached this stage.
Could this happen to us?

As long as they don't re brand queen of the Nile I think the club will be ok.

It is going to come out of the grant money.

It is essentially a cash injection to allow us to get back onto the level playing field in terms of facilities and sports science etc. If I were to hazard a guess I would say we are getting immediately now what it would take the term of the loan repayments to get.

I would also imagine the 10 year deal at ANZ Stadium secured the funding to make up for this shortfall from the grant if it comes about. The 10 year contract also locks us into a major stadium as per the NRL policy of preference to those larger venues and makes us a cornerstone of the Sydney NRL marketplace thus making it impossible to move us.

That would be my estimation of it all

If I was giving money to the Weststigers, or any other team from my Company, and some goose told me I had to change my Company name, I would tell them to go jump and no more money. Simple.

There is no way that they can legally make Ashfield or Campbelltown change its name
( especially from a Magpie to a Tiger ). What a load of crap.

I find myself wondering…
IF and WHEN the Rozelle development goes ahead and the Leagues club is re-opened therein,
1: Would it be badged Wests Tigers Leagues club
(I feel it would be 12 steps backwards to badge it anything else)
2: What will be the opinion of Wests Ashfield/Campbelltown if and when this happens?

I feel they would get their back up because the new Leagues Club has aligned itself with the Football Club....
But they don't want to do it (They've had plenty of opportunity)

I feel whilst they don't want to align themselves with the WT's Football Club, They also definitely wouldn't want Balmain to!!!

The thing that gets me about Roy, is that he never has anything positive to say about our great club which gave him the profile he enjoys today. All he seems to do is stir the pot, and just when it looks like things are settling down he chooses to stir it again.

Is he abusing the fact that he has more "inside knowledge" at Wests Tigers than he does at other clubs and that is why all his journalistic skills are focused on WT whilst other clubs are spared the same spotlight.

This is really not a story about anything, it is designed to stir factions within the club and to destabilize.
