Lovett re-signs with Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce the re-signing of forward Kyle Lovett for a further two years.

The new contract has secured Lovett at the Club through until the end of the 2017 NRL season.

The 22-year-old made his NRL debut in Round 1 against the Gold Coast Titans and has played a total of 19 first grade games this season.

Primarily a backrower, Lovett came through the Balmain development system – playing for Five Dock RSL and Leichhardt Juniors before graduating to the Wests Tigers’ Holden Cup squad in 2012.

Lovett has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2015 and expressed his excitement with the new contract.

“I’m stoked with the new deal,” Lovett said. “I love playing for the Club and I’ve really enjoyed this season in the NRL.

“It was obviously a goal of mine to play first grade this year and that opportunity came in Round 1, which I wasn’t really expecting, but I’ve enjoyed the challenge.

“Getting the contract out of the way is something I was looking forward to; I’m keen to finish this season strong and to keep working on my consistency.”

Wests Tigers Head Coach Jason Taylor said he has been impressed by Lovett’s performances in 2015 and was pleased to have him at the Club for another two years.

“Kyle has exceeded all expectations this year,” Taylor said. “He made his debut at the beginning of the year and we had expected a handful of games from him – given it’s his first year in the NRL - but he has been really impressive and played close to every game.

“That effort is a credit to himself and the Club because he’s done probably three times more than what we had hoped for and that’s really pleasing.”

What some people seem to be missing is the fact that we have to play someone in the back row. There's basically nobody out there left to bring in who's notably better than what we have, and if there is we can't afford them. On that basis, we need to have 17 players to pick every week, they can't be Farah, Cherrington, Moses, 7x Tedesco and 7x Woods, and the options are, roughly, what we have and what we can pick up in the bargain bin. Given what we have in the back row is Sironen, Lawrence, Lovett, Tapau and Halatau (plus kids and reggies) there are a lot of people remarkably willing to say cheerio to Lovett.

Given he isn't going to be filling a roster spot that would otherwise go to Sam Burgess or Sonny Bill, the only thing that matters with Lovett is how much he's being paid. If it's A$400,000 year it's a shocking deal, if it's A$100,000 a year it's a bargain. None of us know, which makes any commentary at all on the deal entirely meaningless unless you're prepared to stick your head on the line and say any generic warm body from reggies would be a better first grade option.

I'm sure in 5 years or so you'll all be saying how much of a great club man he is….

he's young, could and hopefully will improve.
he's been around the core group of players for years so maybe the potential is there but it hasn't clicked yet.

it could be worse guys, it's not like he's some old ray cashmere type we're keeping around.
keep an eye on him, he'll have a dig.

This is true. He's no all-star but he is just a youngen. He may well kick on nicely, and if he doesn't I don't see the harm done as given our cap situation he surely wouldn't be on a fortune.

When JT says Lovett has exceeded his expectations this year, I have deep concerns around WT's future prospects. The stats getting quoted in defence of Lovett are not addressing the real issue. Throwing a hand out at an opposition ball carrier is not merely a 'missed tackle'. It is a non attempt, which is unforgivable on every level. Lovett's 'defence' is woeful. Anyone who has watched all the tries that have resulted from his non efforts in defence, is laughing at the stats being used here to defend him here.

Is he really any worse than Liam Fulton? Don't get me wrong, Fulton was a great clubman, but that's all. He was way too overrated imo.

the thing with Lovett is that he needs to improve by at least 60% to be considered a good solid first grader and being a player with little natural talent this wont happen.he may improve a little but not to where we want.i have no doubt he tries hard but as you said to stick an arm out and not even try to make contact with a player who is threatening to score is unforgivable.i have been saying this for a few weeks, surely there are better options at other clubs who are looking for an opportunity that we could have signed for the same money.

IMO Lovett is a poor man's Fulton.

I'm not trying to bash him or ''stir the pot'', but i just never really understood what people saw in him that lead them to believe he was so valuable to us. I'm not saying i wasn't a fan, because i did like him, but to me he was a plodder who was a great clubman. But that's jmo.

I cannot believe we are going to resign Kyle Lovett. Does taylor watch the same games i do. lovett has continued to show he is no way up to NRL standard. I can count atleast 6 games this year were he has missed a simple 1 on 1 tackle that has lead to tries. he has no force in any of his tackles, he seems to just try to rap his arms around players like his giving them a cuddle. He's attack is even worse. Has this club forgotten what a backrowers job is. I seriously cant believe the players we have let go and now they want to keep this bloke. ITS A JOKE. He wouldnt make my local Agrade team. No wonder we havent got money to buy real forwards. I GIVE UP. :deadhorse:

I agree Who69\. I don't see any agression or power in him at all. Gives away stupid penalties, doesn't bend the line and can't defend. Why, oh Why are we keeping him??? :astonished:

Have you watched any WT NSW Cup games?…Our team is hopeless...we don't have anyone better than Lovett running around to replace him...

Lovett is the best we can come up with??? Sad isn't it. :frowning:

Mate I agree, he was overrated - but it's only because he achieved almost cult-hero status while to the rest of the league he was simply a role-player.
But he was definitely more than just a plodder. Buchanan, Lovett, Galloway are plodders. Heighington, Skandalis, Bryce Gibbs were plodders. Fulton at least offered a bit more in that he had the ability to pass, offload and was a reliable cover defender.

PS: We should have a new thread of WT greatest plodders.

PPS: Before people jump down my throat yes Skandalis was a plodder and it ain't sacrilege because I'm saying he was perhaps the greatest of all plodders. He is an immortal plodder alongside a subaru outback and a turtle.

Careful, people might accuse you of pot stirring.

Big shout out to Nathan Hindmarsh...just cause I can...

Halatau was not a plodder in 05\. He was our best player in the finals series.

Geez some on here are tough,Lovett is in his first nrl season and is only a kid himself…he is a good worker and tries his best...some of the highly paid in this team dont get through the same work rate as he does and everyone wants to get rid of him...

I bet he isnt on between 400/600k a year like some, but still puts in to the best of his ability..thrown in early because of lack of depth....yep lets crucify him for doing the best he can....fair dinkum....

I understand what you're saying TT, but when trying your "best" isn't good enough, you need to try harder. He needs to have a good pre-season, do some extras, and hopefully he will improve for us in 2016\. He seems like a nice young man, but that doesn't win us footy games I'm afraid. :frowning:
We desperately need some mongrel and agression in our team and unfortunately I don't see any in Kyle.

Not sure why people complain about Lovett. He's the prototypical type of player all clubs down the bottom of the ladder have. He gets a bung rap imo. He puts in work rate was. He puts in a lot more than a couple of others.

Couldnt agree more.

He is just a role player, playing a role.

Pretty good work rate, not much impact, but doesnt get dominated all that often, makes mistakes occasionally sure.

He is not terrible, he is just not great, most sides carry a player or 2 like him in their squads.

Lol Goose. Since you put it like that, I'm hoping and 😛ray: someone better comes along. :  Seriously i do hope he improves…
