Richards 54m goal

And don't forget, these guys were kicking with the old leather balls that got heavier with sweat as the game wore on.

God yes, they were like sandbags when they got wet!

But I have found that the old leather balls when you hit them sweet go much further than the new synthetic balls

They torped easier the old leather ball

Saw KB (Golden Boots) kick one 60m at Leichhardt with an RL ball.
A lot more difficult than a Union ball or a ball they have now.

60 metres or 60 yards Russell ??

Obviously yards Happy (my error).

Still a great kick and one of only many from half way or I or 2 yards over

I vaguely remember a game when there was a penalty off the kick off for being In front of the kicker ( or something similar) then Ross Conlon places and kicks the penalty from halfway to goes 2 nil up without any play. He did something similar in an origin match.

I'll take your word for that Happy - I couldn't kick a cat!

Ross Conlon "built for origin". Shows the importance of a gun kicker in big games. Pat will be a godsend when we are in the GF.

Maybe its because my plant leg now is my crook knee , but the new balls seem harder to torp and when you do get them to torp they get too high

The older leather ball , I could get it to draw with the torp off the right foot and easily hit 40-50 plus metres but they would stay relatively low which I preferred

Richards' kick was one of the game highlights for me it showed how far on top WTs were and put the boot into the dogs not to mention the ball.

I'm calling BS on happys kicking game .
We need video evidence
Even black & white pics will do …..

I had 3 years playing rugby in the 80 's as a fullback

Had to learn to kick long , about the only time you ran with the ball was to kick off

I wasn't really fussed on Union , didn't have a choice going to a GPS school and they prevented you playing League as well

What's the big deal about kicking a football 40-50 metres seriously ??

Hmmm that could be a tad difficult, since Happy's playing days preceded the advent of the Box Brownie and Microfilm. You might just have to take his word for it

I had an old footy that went under a cars front wheel…result was a permanent bulge in one spot,,,as a result there was only one way to place it on a mound of dirt....(no tees)...when practicing goal kicking

Torpedo punts are so nineteen70's....but any mug with half a clue could kick one

Half time entertainment at the next Tigers game. A kicking dual between Happy and Ink. Leather Ball.
Milky as ball boy, the crowd would love it.
